This is the process I went through earlier this week to (1) help use up the remaining "done" compost we have on hand and (2) prepare our remaining "not done" compost piles for winter.

I've come to the same conclusion about the mask - you're the first I've seen to mention it. And I like the idea of quaffing a pint at the end of the day.... lol

Thank you! It's amazing that I see so many others not wearing a mask when turning/flipping/handling compost. To me it's a no-brainer, but hey, to each their own. Cheers!

Does seem like lots of extra work to filter it out (I don't bother.) @notillgrowers uses a bigger sieve and a tarp on the ground. If I had to filter, I think I'd go with something like that: ruclips.net/video/7uwL8fFFTMk/видео.html

Better way: Don't bother removing the little sticks, or sifting it, or breaking up the lumps at all.

I've been to Charles Dowding's incredible garden and the spreaded compost is lumpy and full of bits of wood. Frost breaks the lumps apart. Just not necessary to remove the woody bits, and it adds fertility to the beds. Save yourself the time and if you want to exercise do some burpies - repeated movements like this is not good exercise, it leads to injury (my mother in law is a physiotherapist and my partner is a personal trainer - this what they both say).
You asked for a better way!
