    For non-japanese speaker:
This song does not glorify militarism or the imperialism of Japan in the past. Rather, it is a yearning for the Meiji and Taisho eras(1868-1926) and a metaphorical critique of the modern era.
The theme of the song, "Taisho Romanticism," stemmed from “the Meiji Restoration” in 1868, which marked the end of the feudal era when samurai ruled over Japan, and Japan began to "modernize" by adopting learning, and political systems from European conutries in order to catch up with the West. This reformation led to a fusion with the occidental culture and the traditional Japanese culture that had existed since ancient times, and a rapid growth into a freer and more diverse society.
This period was a time of “the golden age” for the Japanese, and the people at that time were full of vitality and hope. Adoration for those days, some Japanese people today enjoy “cosplaying” the culture of this period, including the clothes, food, and architecture.

To the Japanese listeners, the song means nothing particularly deep tbh. All the apparent references about the modernization and what not are more of a basic historical knowledge to us, rather than an actual commentary about the history. Meiji-Taisho aesthetic is a low-key popular trope too, but that itself is not associated with some specific politics in Japan.
The fun of this song is more about the wording and the sound than meanings. It’s basically just an edgy sounding, mildly melancholic aesthetic-centered song. Overall I don’t recommend you to read too much into it. Just enjoy the the wordplays. Peace

Senbonzakura clearly embodies the Taisho Romantic style, both in its lyrics and music video.
'Taisho Roman' refers to the aesthetic of the actual Taisho era (1912-1926), which, occurring during World War I, inevitably includes military elements. Additionally, in Japanese subculture, it often incorporates retro-futuristic elements.
This means that Senbonzakura shares a similar vibe with games like Fallout, BioShock, and Atomic Heart.
Can you see why Japanese people don't find the lyrics of this song problematic?
    Additional Note:
Those reading the translated lyrics might not know, but the content of Senbonzakura's lyrics is so obscure that most Japanese people, including myself, probably don't understand what the song is actually about.
When terms like 'evil spirits begone' and 'ICBM' appear together, I realized that this song isn't meant to be deeply understood. The lyrics are simply a collection of cool-sounding words thrown together.

Hi there! Im a JANEASE university student.
Quite a few people seem to view this song as militaristic, but there are some issues with this English translation.
Some parts are even completely MISTRASlATED. So, I'll list the questionable parts of the English translation.
    0:51 "少年少女 戦国無双 浮世の隨まにまに"
Revised → "Young men and Young women. Unrivaled in the Warring States Period. The whims of this transient world"
The term '戦国無双' does not imply 'belligerent and base' individuals reminiscent of warmongers. It refers to individuals who boast unparalleled strength in a chaotic world of incessant warfare.
Furthermore, the translation of '浮世のまにまに' is also inaccurate. It means 'without resisting the changes of the harsh world' and does not imply being commanded by someone's will.

    • @pmpmpmpmpmpmp
      @pmpmpmpmpmpmp 8 месяцев назад +2

      0:55 "千本桜"
      in movie "Sakuras thousandfold"
      Revised "Thousands of sakura"
      "夜に紛れ"
      in movie "entwined with night"
      Revise "Lost in the night"
      Thousandfolds is a bit silly.

    • @pmpmpmpmpmpmp
      @pmpmpmpmpmpmp 8 месяцев назад +3

      1:02 "此処は宴"
in movie "Herein rages a feast"
      Revied "Herein banquets"
"此処" means "here", "宴" means just "formal party". I dont know why "宴" can mean "rage a feast" by only itself.
      "鋼の檻その断頭台で見下ろして"
in movie "a cage of steel from that guillotine, looking down upon"
Revised "the steel cage. Looking down from the guillotine."
To be honest, even in the original text, this phrase is unclear. It's not clear who is looking down, and whether the steel cage and guillotine are the same thing.
      1:08 "三千世界 常世之闇"
in movies "A transcendent unvers. GLOOM OF EMPYGREAN"
Revised "Three Thousand World. The eternal darkness."
"常世の闇" means just "eternal darkness". NO meanings EMPYREAN.
      1:34 "百戦錬磨の見た目は将校 行ったり来たりの花魁道中"
in movie "The battle-hardened. veiled as an officer loitering about with coutesans. trtly a wanderlust.
Revised "Battle-hardened, the appearance of an officer. Going back and Going forth, Oiran-Dochu"
THIS IS ALSO AN UNBELIEAVABLY MISS TRANSLATION.
First of all, this officer is NOT walking with prostitutes.
The term '花魁道中' refers to the traditional 'gei-sha' way of walking in Japan. This walking style involves swaying or swaying like dancing, hence the expression 'going back and forth.'
Above all, there is ABSOLUTELY NO MEANINGS OF 'WANDERLUST' in the lyrics.

This song is connection from empire era Japan and peace era Japan. Like description that man and woman are (fantasy) warriors. so gamers. Like military officers walking like oiran (cosplayer).
I also like there is vague imperial dogwistle like "kamikaze pilot" looking down on today Japan.
Like word Seiran no Sora, blue sky or Seiran type war plane is far away. It is they glad it is over or they longing of such martial spirit.
This contrast of such weak minded but peaceful or people longing of fascist past is so contradict and vague. It make such complex and good song.

For the longest time I had great difficulty parsing the English translation in the video. It just hit me right now that the reason the English translation (not only in this video but in a lot of websites that have translated Senbonzakura into English) was so hard to understand was the sheer number of unnecessary commas 😒

I love how Japanese in the comment section are mentioning the Taisho Romanticism while most foreigners are totally confused.
The song reminds me of Siam around the same era that was also going through modernization as well, and that's how most of the "Modern" Thai cultures and national costumes such as Raj Pattern came from.

    ICBMは歌詞の流れに関係なく悪霊退散が4拍(四字熟語)だから、もう一度4拍を取りたかっただけ。歌詞に意図はなく中二病的聞き心地重視の歌詞に文句言っても仕方ないかと。

Due to its historical and political sensitivity people are over explaining things. If the setting is in Sengoku era no one will take it more seriously than a Chuunibyou song

I now know why and ever since i researched ive been meaning to use Senbokazakura with about the pasts itself. Ever since WWII came ive done nothing but think about the horrific things Japan hid from their OWN people and their own crimes.
