    The Evo looks like a solid motor. The engineering on any engine is amazing.

    I just wanted to say "thank you" for posting this video. I own a 1999 Harley Davidson Softail FXST 1340 Evo. My valve seals / piston rings have recently failed, and I do not have the thousands of U.S. dollars to bring it to a shop. After watching this video, I am ready to take on the task myself. I've been a machinery service technician for 20 years, but rarely accessed the inner workings of an engine. Again, thank you for the visual step-by-step help that you have provided !

    Well done Josip! These EVO engines in my opinion and others the best engine produced by HD. I have a 1994 FXR, always starts right up, plenty of "get up and go", the amazing thing is how good it 's mileage is! The First long ride with the guys I was getting about 52 mpg, the full-sized Asian bikes had to keep on stopping for fuel. I still shake my head in disbelief... Ride on Brothers

    Excellent video. No extraneous verbal bullshit to distract you. Just the straight goods. They don't show the application of build lube however. I use STP or Lucas Oil for all the friction surfaces when building an engine. The Evolution motor is almost as simple as a lawnmower engine, that's the absolute beauty of it. With only a few hand tools you can make it run forever. If only there were more engines that embraced this simplicity.

    This is a basic design that was 1903 design. Its simplicity is the inherent reason to the reliability of HD motors. The Honda Rebel engines were designed to take little space. As a result, adjusting valves is a real ordeal. I like the simplicity of the HD designs.

    This video is awesome...big help! As someone mentioned above, I am also changing my piston rings because my 94' Evo is just eating up oil, slightly smoking, leaking oil from rockerbox screw hole & glazing out of the bottom of barrel onto the crankcase but I'm curious to know before I remove the barrel if the piston size has been increased because its has stage 3 ported and polished heads making it a 1250cc...?

  • @tomcata1467
    @tomcata1467 8 лет назад

    Yes, that is correct.......two intake, two exhaust cam arrangement on the Sporties The point, I was trying to make was I was referring to the single cam Big Twin Evo Engines, and the Sporty is still based upon the Evo design, although, the Sporties are not single cam, they use Metal Gear Drives, as the big Twin Single Cam EVO engine, did on the big Twins, unlike the TC engines, with their two cam arrangement, driven by silent chain drives, with PLASTIC tensioners. Neither the EVO, big twin engine, nor the Sporties use silent chain drives. Thus the similarity between the current Sporties and the older EVO engines for the big twins of yesterday........thanks for your input.

    This was the single cam EVOLUTION or BLOCKHEAD motor which saved Harley from going under to the Metric bike's competition. This was a very reliable, 1340cc, 80 CID, engine. Easy to work on and to rebuild. This engine was produced from 1984-1998.
    It was replaced in 1999 to the present by the fatally flawed, new Twin Cam Engine, which is a bad engine to have on a Harley, There are plenty of YOU TUBE videos indicating why you should use an EVO motor on a Harley as opposed to the Twin Cam engine.

    • @JKDROB
      @JKDROB 9 лет назад

      tomcata1467 They call those opinions.....which the HD world is full of.

    • @tomcata1467
      @tomcata1467 9 лет назад +1

      Agreed....everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their FACTS. And facts are what I am talking about. 1+1=2, is an example of a fact, and it's universal, no room for opinion. Same with the facts of the Twin Cam engine, fatally flawed design, versus the EVO motor.

    • @JKDROB
      @JKDROB 9 лет назад

      No that's an opinion again. HD still build the TwinCam and the Evo is all but gone...

    • @tomcata1467
      @tomcata1467 9 лет назад +1

      Part of the history of Harley who was going under before the developed the EVO to compete again, against the Metric Bikes, which at the time, where out selling Harley, after the AMC fiasco.

    they left out a lot of real tech tips on re-assembly just one thing is the valve springs rubbing on the covers look for clearance not to be to close to the valve cover rubbing on the springs on some new covers you must kiss the cover with a grinder tool to give clearance not to be rubbing on the cover with the valve spring so look for that on re-assembly... and use cometic gaskets or james gaskets do not use those cheap ass Harley gaskets i did and they leaked i was pissed off on how thin there were... what a joke.. learned the hard way... so mad at harley to sell junk ass gaskets...

    • @aarongauthier7894
      @aarongauthier7894 9 лет назад +4

      richard napier overfilled the oil tank. This is because oil is retained in the crankcase. When you check the oil level in the tank, it appears low. When you add some and start it, now the other quart comes from the crankcase and refills the tank as well. Now you have too much ! You can remove some with a clean turkey baster. That's how I do it !
