Thanks for that tour of your lovely collection looking great as usual. Heat has troubled my massies as well, it’s been so difficult to keep them cool at times but we all battle on with this unpredictable British weather.
So true buddy anything over 28 and my massies just don’t like it some even shrivel there leaves, 22 is ideal but how can we manage that with these outside temperatures.
@@MicksMasdevalliaorchids 22 is my winter temperature at least that's where I keep my heating on. Would mean a change of grow room every year, could be done think I will
Your collection is looking really good despite your warm temps. Shame about some of the blooms blasting because of the heat....but they seem determined to grow more buds and give it another go! 🤞 for cooler weather so you can see more blooming.
Thanks Diane it’s been a really bad period trying to keep them cool a local grower who is a friend lost about 12 massies due to that heat, thanks for watching and commenting.
Lovely tour as always Mick, always enjoy touring round your greenhouse I just wish I had a bigger Massie house but there is no more room here. Had same problems as you with slugs and snails. Slugs strip the blooms and snails do the leaves. I have evicted a few more this week. I spoke to one of our gardening growers in out Society about it. He has the greenest figures I know and he states that the trick is to get the slug pellets out at the right time when they are liable to come in and then you head them off at the pass. What I didn’t ask him was when that was so I will email him and then let you know. A lot of the Draculas thrown up successive flowers and those are the ones you need to let the flowers fall off themselves apparently. Vampira, chimaera, chestertonii, hirtzii and several more. Most only repeat flower for 4 times and sometimes the flower spike gets so long it is way out of control. I have a lovely Dracula gigas which I am currently nursing with 10 spikes. It is a stunning flower but the spikes all grow upwards. The problem occurs later because they can get to coccinea height, I have known them in excess of 12”. It is is the shadiest part of the greenhouse and the fogger has been on extra overtime to combat the heat, but like you buds are blasting, all but one now of my Drac bella have gone. I can never keep that happy. I have also now taken all of mine out of the roof and hung them from the staging, cant do any more. Also got some standing in water on the low shelf as well. Like you struggled to keep the temps down but my theory was if I kept the fogger going they would prefer it and that has proved helpful. Fingers crossed for more successes yet. Stay safe.
Lynn Smith thanks for your help there, I’ve used slug pellets today and moved all pots onto wire racks which a local grower advised to allow no hiding place 😂 and allow additional air flow under this pots as well as drainage hopefully that may help I’ve also ordered some Diatomaceous earth powder to sprinkle around the top of the pots according to him it’s the best deterrent available and safe on plants, the trouble is Lynn our environment is usually damp compared to other growers but I’m sure it’s just a little set back, god help them if I find one!. Take care and happy slug free growing.
I don’t think we will be rid of them at all this year. Nightly slug hunts may become the norm. Another friend did suggest to put a layer of sharp stand in the bottom of your trays and keep it damp, I haven’t tried that one yet. Then there is the old copper tape on the pots as well but when you watch them shimmy down the plastic hangers you do have to admire their tenacity.
I mounted my Selphi dunk it every day to keep it wet and behold it's pushing out a new leaf, it's not out of the woods yet but we're on the right track 😁 really hope the heat doesn't have any residual effects because it really hates it. My house is so well insulated it's damn near impossible to get the heat out
If it’s drying out that quick you’re right it’s to warm I’m watering every other day and misting the days in between just to keep the moss damp, just keep an eye on the roots in case it’s not using all the water up, keep at it buddy we’re all struggling with the heat.
Really frustrating I can't give these the conditions they need I have a warm to hot environment and no decent way to change that (been thinking of converting the indoor shed, I live in a flat, to a cold grow room
Sounds a good idea Ynse but the majority of massies will survive in intermediate condition thinking a head they would still need air circulation, humidity, and sufficient lighting so that’s another cost don’t you have a north facing window or a cool bathroom?.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!

I hope it’s the end of that mini heatwave now normal UK weather will do 😂 sorry you’ve had problems as well.

@@MicksMasdevalliaorchids I get so disappointed when I lose one, I can imagine how your friend must have felt....my sympathies to them.
Great video! Got one massie in flower - menatoi. Success for me, never had luck in bringing them over the summer.
To be honest Martina this years is the first year I have struggled to keep temperatures down, congrats on the Menatoi.
