  • This is just my opinion of why the Overland Expo has nothing to do with Overlanding. It seems nowadays everybody thinks it’s more important to look bad ass and have a bad ass looking jeep or off-road vehicle to look important then to just get out to have fun, with what you need.
Hi, my name is john and I’m 69 years old and I have been living full-time out of my Jeep Cherokee XJ overlanding and exploring and Fly Fishing everywhere and just living the dream.

The best line of all times when you said "they need a therapy"👍👍👍. That Earthroamer looks more like it's gonna start a new colony somewhere in a wilderness. They probably want to show how important they are to wildlife.

its always refreshing to hear a good rant. interesting video. for me it's simply a matter of gaining some separation from the crowds, I love nature and peace and quiet is an underrated commodity (and it's essentially free). Ultimately nature without human noise soothes my soul and I find myself being most content when I am in that setting. Its nice to share with other people sometimes but for me solitude and silence , except for the sounds nature makes like bird song or the breeze in the trees or frogs and crickets suits my personality to a tee.
thanks for sharing your point of view.

Excellent points, John, about those overstuffed rolling mansions, many with absurdly long wheelbases, sold at the Expos. I wonder how many newbies go to Expos and think, at a minimum, they need to buy a souped up, overpriced rig with an overpriced, topheavy rooftop tent ($5,000+). A good ground tent, with beefy stakes, still works fine for many folks. I am somewhere in the middle, driving a comfortable, well-equipped 4 Wheel Camper since 2016, which was bought used for a reasonable price. But I have to say I still enjoy going to Expos and looking at what is available, even if most products are impracticle or overpriced.

you are exactly right. I've been doing this adventure car camping thing for 50 years. Long before anyone uttered the word "overlanding". I've been to 14 Overland Expos. This year I just said ENOUGH. The truth is that all this hype and money, and hyperbolic influencers are destroying everything that makes this pursuit wonderful. once pristine campsites have been trashed by lazy fools following gps routes shared (sold) by influencers. Many of these people also promote a type A powersport approach that puts people and equipment at risk. Expo has changed over the years to promote all of that. I've come to even hate the word "overlanding"

Hey David you are absolutely right. I have been backpacking since the early 70s and on my journeys I thought I spent way too much money on lightweight backpacking gear that is nothing compared to what people spend on their vehicle just to go outside and camp. This is my fifth Overland expo, and I will never do another one again. I have lost so many backwood campsites that I used to love that just got trashed cause it got popular and they just shut it down. I am like you I hate the word, Overlanding myself and I think I call myself an adventure seeker now.

I personally never use the term "overlanding", I call it vehicle based camping, nothing else. Been camping out of vehicles since the mid-1970s and a trip I took to fish, explore, etc...in 1980 to Alaska put in my mind what I wanted for the type of traveling/camping I do. I do what I do to fish, hunt, rock-hound/prospect and back in the day, to trap fur, in out of the way places. I personally have a vehicle that you would probably lump into "not necessary" but then again, it checks all the boxes from my nearly a year long period of living out of my vehicle in Alaska over 40 years ago and is the first one I have come across that basically "checks all the boxes". It is extremely off road capable (built on a 2023 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon) and extremely easy to set up camp while being very comfortable and secure (it has an Alu-Cab Canopy Camper). I have camped in vehicles built like yours, but it always took more time to move stuff around, lay out my bed, etc....and it worked, but it was not that comfortable in the long run and I always had to go solo. I have often had wives (yeah, been married a few times) or girl friends that liked to go with me from time to time and I needed a different set up. I actually had my first roof top tent back in the early 1980s, they have been around since the 1950s when road tripping became a recreational thing. I am on the verge of being retired now that I am in my mid-60s and will be doing like you do a good bit of the time, so I built a comfortable camping vehicle that is new and reliable and yeah, it weren't cheap, but in the scope of things, it was not that expensive either considering what new vehicles cost now. I have been to a few expos now, and I do buy stuff at them, almost always for storage or comfort while on the road. I have purchased chairs, etc....that take up very little space but it is almost always camping equipment or travel equipment. I do like some of the vehicles, but they ain't why I go.

Maybe next year when I’m 70, I may want something a little bit more comfortable. (Maybe)I think rooftop tents have been around since the 30s. I think the bottom line is you do what makes you happy and don’t become a slave to social media telling you what’s gonna make you happy.

You nailed it🎯, my friend. !👍🏼😎Overlanding is so not about all the expensive gear and gadgets. It’s borderline ridiculous. You end up futzing around with all your stuff and not enjoying the outdoors.

I do not think most of those people really do not know how to really enjoy the outdoors. They’re too busy about all the gear they know and looking bad ass to impress everybody then to just enjoy and have fun.

I decided that I can't go overlanding because I have a 9-5. I decided that I like to camp and run trails. I know that I would love to overland but it's just not what I have time to do in my life. I chose to buy a 2003 nissan Xterra. I got the supercharged model for a little extra power. I started by sleeping in the back. Then, I chose to get a bushwacker teardrop trailer. It's got a little ground clearence, it's small and light. I make a camp, then I go offroading to remote places. If I decide to camp in remote places, I just leave the trailer home and go drive there. The Xterra came with a small lift (2") and I put Falken all terrains on it because I'm no rock crawler. I decided to get a snorkel for all the dirt I drive on up here in the summer (northwest) and all the times I had to change my air filter from dust. I go out about every other weekend, all year round. I work on my own stuff. I recently rebuilt the kitchen in my trailer and my starter is getting changed this weekend. all of that is to say, I'm no overlander, and I'm sure people will judge my setup, but I thought about what I wanted to do and what I could do, and I've built it.

I think what you’re doing is absolutely awesome. It’s all about getting out there doing what you wanna do and having fun. It looks like you haven’t become a slave to social media, telling everybody what they have to have. It is cool that you’re that your working and building your own stuff. I see so many people saying they’re building out their rig, but they just give it to a shop and They have everything built for them. Have fun out there.

I learned the same thing two years ago. It might be a good place to look at a camper or something in person but most of the vehicles just look like they’re owned by people from socal who are headed for sema with not much practical use in mind.

It's a joke watching these rich people with their huge rigs. They miss the whole point. Much like most of the weekend warriors I see hiking in the whites. I bought a 2004 ford f150 4 wheel drive with a six and a half foot bed. I bought a fiberglass cap with 3 windows. I put in a plywood foor with carpet I hand made a bed, kitchen area and storage. I use greenies to cook and heat. Cooler with ice. I even have a setup for a toilet. Like you I did it all myself without even thinking of going online. Total cost for the truck $4500. The used cap $500. And $300 to build it out. It's spacious and comfortable. I have camped in it for weeks at a time and can go anywhere in all seasons. I wouldn't change it for anything. Freedom baby!!!

Way back in the 60s I had a Ford F150 with a cap and I camped all over the place with that. Just because you have an expensive built out 4 x 4 rig doesn’t mean you’re living the dream. Lol
