Here’s the problem though. If the children can’t work in the mines, where else will they work? Sweatshops? It’s apparent that the children are forced to work because the parents don’t earn enough.
This is what happens when people want anything, whether its materials for phones and paint, or oil to run their cars and electricity. When people get established outside of poverty, in the middle class they want actual goods and they dont want to have to die in the mines to get them, so other people die in the mines, those that dont have the luxury of asking for a minimum wage and safety protocols like those in the west that make it so people dont have to die horribly so you can get your phone but make it so that companies who are looking for profits move elsewhere. The only real options are, stop buying these products or make it so that people in the west have the same conditions as developing nations to get businesses to even bother. I doubt most of these places are willing to put in place the same regulations as us because they will lose the opportunity they see in these exploitative systems
@Faith Armstrong here's the problem with that and it's the same one that drove these unregulated practices to these places in the first place. Companies take advantage of these labour conditions to get resources at dirt cheap levels as doing so in their own regions is too expensive in part due to regulations, minimum wages etc, so in order to dodge that they import from places willing to ignore them. So as say Madagascar regulates out child labor, dangerous mining conditions and unregulated mining then these companies will just move on to the next place and start again. Unfortunately that's just the nature of seeking exponential profit above all else. The only way you could get around that is by nationalizing these industries but even then all it takes is the wrong party in power and then these practices return anyways as austerity measures.
Some of these children are forced to work to eat so banning them from doing so creates other problems. The world is such a shitty place for some it's hard for the Western world to understand the idea that you work or starve. Had conversations about this in the past and I have no solutions. There is not enough money in the area to save these children from starving and what there is, is not used wisely.
