- Rat Hole Minors (2014): In the coal mines of India, tens of thousands of children are forced to work in "rat holes", tiny pits too small for adults to reach. Why are the authorities turning a blind eye to this lethal and illegal practice?

"We might get hit by a wire or rocks...along the path there are holes and you never know when you might fall", says 13-year-old Lakpa of the tiny, dark tunnels stretching over 50 metres into the earth that he works in each day. According to Hasina Karbith, a charity worker for Indian NGO Impulse, there are over 70,000 underage children working just in the mines of Meghalaya. The charity is trying to fight what they say is a rampant illegal industry of trafficking from Nepal and child labour in the mines. "We wrote more than 60 letters to the government with the findings and still we didn't get any response. I still remember the day when the government wrote back to us and said, 'you have to present the names of the 70,000 children. If you cannot do it in the next 15 days then your organisation is going to be shut down'."

Those brothers are so cute, they seem like they really have each others back. I hope they find a way out one day
Is there any update on this??? Add these children still working in the mines?
@@kassrripples3659 sadly I’d say it’s nearly impossible to locate them and based on their situation it’s more likely than not they are dead or still working the mines :/
Ahile kaha xa bisal rain vikasa??
Not sure they really are getting a great life there. Sure they have a better chance and are much safer but still.
Our country will welcome their wealthy boss before they help these precious children. Their the real refugees..
The boys didn't cry when they left their parents but they did cry when the lady was leaving them in the boarding school.
Do you know why?
So much of kindness in her voice. She bonded with them as if they were her own. Maybe in the past life they were her children.
Because she has shown them more love
than the drunken parents?
They no longer working but going to school what they always wanted to do
Yeah because they just realized they were ripped from everything they have ever known overnight!
Vhuk
My back started hurting just seeing those kids crawling into that mine! That lady helping those children is an angel. The craziest thing is that most of those mine owners won't allow their own children to do such manual work. The other lady with her "suspicions" knows exactly what's going on, and she's working for the benefit of the various mine owners, and definitely not the children.
It happens unfortunately. It's happened since large civilizations began and will continue to happen and grow unless something is done to combat this issue.
You correctly mentioned
why do these documentaries keep saying kids and children. these are not kids or children. these are boys. there are no girls working here. just an example of sexism against men and boys. how about we send the girls in the mines. let them die and the boys can be safe?
@@ASAS-dp1nc because young girls end up working too?? 10:35 multiple young girls working in some of the photos on this video. Your first world problems and fears are not theirs.
Bro that just happen I was sitting and my back started to hurt non stop when I was watching the video
Kids literally seen in the mines working and doing mining related activities
Even photos of them IN the mines, mining coal with a pickaxe

Those kids are paid actors but seriously this is worse then then genocide in my opinion

When that kind lady was about to leave the childrens, their eyes were wet,and so was mine.

That moment when the lady and her helpers where about to say good by to the boys really touch my heart...god bless the lady for helping kids like them! 🙌
70,000 Children Work in ONE State's illegal Coal Mines... Only 2 Children are Rescued and sent out to Child-Shelter.. very sad situation... Corruption is deeply rooted in the hearts and minds of RICH INDIANS..
In 1921, my father went to work at age 12 in a coal mine in Kentucky.
Incidentally he was a WHITE MAN, BORN IN USA.
He retired from coal mining at age 62 in 1971.
You should've left out "Indians".
That's because these states have autonomy....no Indian from mainland can but a land and settle here

The women with the glasses just lied through all questions and its sad af that she don't even care
This saddens me...what selfish parents!! They're drinking and getting drunk while their children go into dangerous mines to get money to provide for physically able ADULTS drinking habits!!! Ridiculous!!!!!!!
whats worse is owning a cell phone or laptop after watching this
you say parents? its nwo
@native american. and british queen is german, and all kings and queens in 500 years ago are in relationship
how the hell do u know what tgeir parents are doing
If you are sad than go do something about rather then judging and bitching while you are on your bed picking your ass and sniffing your fingers after pretending to be sad. These kids dont need your pity and you dont kno the story to their parents problems. Stop judging and enjoy the show.
Respect to this amazing lady! Such an incredible job you have done.
My eye drops when the two boys voluntarily go with the lady..I think they are very tired working everyday..so they decided to go and live that place...thanks to the NGOs of helping those kids for their better future..
Can you do a follow-up documentary now (after five years) on these two kids and the one who refused to be rescued ?
Title should be Nepali Kids working in Indian Mine.
Yeah
Yes
This is true
Most in fact are Indians
@Hairy French Ass No their not, some are from Nepal, most are Indian
Incredible, these kids are incredible. Speaking from experience, I live in the UK and people complain about rain and school. Now it seems we're the selfish ones seeing this children driven to earn money to survive.
There was no rain in those mines

Well done Hasina. You are indeed an angel. That labor minister should be sacked,,
I really hope they do well & never have to see another day in those mines, I also wish their friend would see the light & join them!
I hope these kids have a bright future
What a heartbreaking and heartwarming story. Incredibly well done documentary.
just watching this have me so much anxiety and claustrophobia. i feel so bad for them and hope they find a way to get out and get a better life.
There are so many wealthy Indians and all this goes on unbeleivable
It was so lovely to watch them back to Nepal for their bright future finally. Loved this video man 😍😍😊
I'm from Meghalaya and apparently the so called "ban" on rat hole mining has been imposed for now . And honestly asking or even trying to get information on this from the government is useless
wow!!!
..SALUTE TO THAT ORGANIZATION--my respect and admiration for ur perseverance and enduring love for these kidz--am excited as they are..but am teary-eyed when they cried the time u're leaving them to the school dormitory--brave kidz who was able to stand being away from their family jz like that!!!
I CAN'T WAIT for THE DAY til I SEE THEM FINISHED SCHOOL AND REALIZED THEIR DREAMS--PLEASE MORE VIDEOS ABOUT THEIR JOURNEY IN LIFE!!!
GODBLESS u..and ur awesome organization!
I am so happy they are allowed to go to school finally. The hardships they went trough make me tear up no child in fact no human should need to work like that. that horrible woman from the gov or whatever they interviewed should work down there for a few days, maybe then she will stop with these horendous lies. I wish those brothers all the best that bond they have is unbelievable.
A follow up of these two boys would be outstanding
18:17 that hug when theyre walking into school :)
Chills are all I get from this. incredible
i started working under the table on farms in the US at 12, but i did it for spending money, not to survive. all of us kids did it. i couldnt imagine younger kids doing it.
thumbs up
thanks for showing the truth local media cant show these as powerful people will come after them
People are on here mad at the parents yet no one is going after the businesses that are allowing this. Lets be real. That family is poor just like many others which means they will have their entire family working but how much is everyone making.... bet you barely nothing! It sucks to see kids childhood taken but people rather them starve then work. People rather be mad at the poor parents then the bigger corps. Who are taking full advantage and slaving these people.
So lets say that Buisness wouldnt allow this Children to work. You dont think their parents would prostitute their Children which is far worse?
Wait are the businesses forcing them to work or their parents
That won't fix the problem, It might even make it worse for them
the parents of these 2 boys are very able bodies, maybe instead of them (parents) drinking & passing out, they should be working in the mine. ofcourse those large corporation is also at fault, but those useless parents is guilty as well
Many people get drunk not because of his lavish life but because of their hard work which tear the skin and burn their heart. Believe me most labour get drunk because of the pain they suffer from the work they do whole day. They won’t to sleep that night so that they can work tomorrow. So they get drunk and sleep . This turns into a habit slowly it turns into addiction which will make then unable to work .
Really touching smile of both the kids. Lot of good people required to change so many kids life. If there is any contact of the NGO then share so kind hearts can contribute to make this a big mission. Thanks.
70% of workers here are from Nepal, they’re brave and hard working. It’s saddening our corrupt government can’t do much for our own people. God bless them 🙏🏻
There is a thin line between bravery and stupidity. What will happen if father die in mine? The mother will be left with bunch of children. What next? Children will have to work. There must be safer way to provide for their family. But seems that those people just aren't able to change their faith. Born in poverty, die in poverty. The problem with India is the mentalilty of its people and approach to work. I work with some and the job is just done very poorly and nobody cares. Thats why the country looks like it looks. Attention to details is non existent. Chinese are better employees and they are now second economy in the world.
@@sylwek1177 there is no accountability in India. From the government down to the smallest bureaucrat, everyone works with 0 accountability for their negligence and mistakes. This whole system is a failure.

Dam, what a difficult life
And westerners think they have it hard.
Daniel Frederikson
I'm not saying westerners aren't hard-workers but, the fact of the matters is that they have it a lot better.
"Westerners" started out like this too though. Think about the gold miners in California back in the 1800s, etc. America for example, is a more "developed" nation, it's not that we are smarter or stronger or anything, but we've developed safety institutions, organizations that improve the quality of our workers lives and the equipment we use. These things have gone far in improving our working conditions over the last 200 years. Yes we have it much, much better in the west. But it was not always that way.
Nobody is saying it was always this way but, if westerners aren't smarter, why do we have effective safety institutions and organizations, while many parts of the world don't? I think you know what I'm implying.
I don't know what you're implying. I think the fact that this kind of mining is "illegal" tells us a lot about the intelligence of their regulations. They are obviously trying to save lives. In America there are all sorts of "illegal" businesses that continue, despite the safety issues. We have a better developed "enforcement" system here in the west, so if there were a bunch of people using children as miners, chances are they would get shut down much faster in the west.
🙌🙌kudos to the team!! Thanks for providing them education. Wishing them to achieve their dreams❤
Tough places often breed tough people. I hope these children find a way out of this
I know of a coal mine that has 500 families in Meghalaya before this and the other documentary from ABC News USA documentary was published. The coal mine was closed by the government for 2 years now and the many families who use to earn a living from coal mining have suffered the most. Did the government and NGO's help any of them? NO! The government even made a lot of money from the Paris Agreement last year. Will that money from the EU goes to these people? I doubt it.
What they didn't show are the thriving communities in this region. They did mention a little about other children going to school. Yes, there are schools, playgrounds, football fields, and even temples and churches. Children in these places are better off than those rich kids who spend most of their time in front of an electronic device trying to figure out how to be popular on youtube.
The winners from this kind of propaganda are the TV networks, NGO's who are looking for more funding and corrupt government officials.
You supports child slave labor...... let that sink in.
@@mrs.chandler9384 fact: some of the parents sold their children to child sex traders after losing their job at the coal mine.....let that sink in.
Robert Y so selling children into sex slavery is worse? I agree. Making children work in dangerous mines isn’t okay either. Sex slavery is horrible, but so is dangerous child labor. Do you agree?

Do these documentaries change anything for the lives of the children or do they just expose and make money for the journalists?
It all depends on how many ppl see them, who sees them, and if the ppl seeing them can do anything about it.

Thank you so much for this research. Thanks a lot.
I wonder if big mouth greta and anyone who follows her have watched this! This is what a lost childhood is not being rich, going around the world preaching to others about her loss!
She has and she says to you "how dare you".
I'm claustrophobic so the first minutes of the video I literally had difficulty breathing 😨😨😨.
Really sad to see children going into force labor. I think population is the real cause of poverty. We need to revise the human laws or ideas about the issue on having children.
Great job by you people like you are the hope of this country.

Didn't stuff like this happen here in the U.S. before the 20th century .
I love how nobody blames the private owners of the mine who are directly responsible for these conditions. Barely a mention of them.
Thank you, great little doc
Salute to haseena and other social workers like him , who are making life of these children better .
Love you Nepal for being India's best neighbour. Excellent video ,I like it .
Thouh I definitely do not agree with child labour, it's important to see both sides of the coin before coming to a conclusion. While it's morally wrong to employ children, the thing is that these children have no-where else to go. If they don't work, they often don't eat. It's easy for people sitting behind a computer declaring child labour is inhumane and evil, however unless we set up safety nets for those children to live if they do not have the opportunity to work, the alternative would be much worse (starvation and maybe even death).
Of course I don't agree with child labour, I believe that they should be in school working on their future, however the truth is that many children just don't even have that opportunity and this is the only way they can survive.
niels griffioen all the women should be sterilised after having 1 kid ? It's simple they shouldn't be allowed to perpetuate the suffering of kids
niels griffioen Agree. I lived a tough life and it was easier for people to judge my parents who had nothing and no education to improve the situation.
#Salma Yusuf they shouldn’t have had you then
What you said is right. Actually it makes a lot of sense. If we can build a place for them to be, then this market for children would die off. It's a good solution.
Recon what the other side of the coin would look like?
I feel sick just watching them climb through the tunnels. I would panic from the claustrophobia.
Not to mention its hot, and low in oxygen causing you to panic more
Thank god they have eachother. And that familiarity of at least one person they know. One person whos always been there. When everything else is changing. They will have eachother for support and love. And that gives them the strength they need keep moving forward.
Mindboggling documentary. I'm lost for words.
it is not traficking this woman should go talk to corrupt Indian politician who are stealing money in billions. this women is violating human rights of poor parents.
So the parents have the right to get drunk every night and make their own children work in the mines where they will most likely die? Ok ignoramous
You can put the blame for this squarely on the Indian government and bureaucratic people just like their labour Minister who they had any interview here. People like her, the people that own these mines you need to call them by name these are the people you are to address. people in the US actually have the audacity to bitch about unions it's absolutely mind-blowing to me
Salute for these type of organisations in india.
I pray that these 2 kids can make a good life. But feeling sad for the elder brother whose age is 14 and left alone to work and live with drunk parents.
I laughed alot a boy shake his body when the train blow Horn ✌️😂😂😂
Yes i noticed too :))
May GOD bless you all
Those boys are so unbelievably brave, wow , I hope they are ok x
The state government should be ashamed of themselves
when you see a wealthy Indian slacking in an overseas school, ask them who paid for them to be there.
Sending a child to a building away from home where they have to sit most of the day and learn challenging concepts for no benefit is essentially the same thing.
A big salute to Hasenna mam for bringing the boys back to civilization....Im very proud of the lady..
I couldn’t bare watching more than 2 minutes of this video. Too sad and felt too scared for the kids.😔
Poor kids.. at least 2 are saved
The subtitles are not entirely accurate. At 2:59 for example, the boy is saying "there are cracks along the tunnel, and you never know when it might fall" (the subtitle says "you might fall"). He is talking about the tunnel collapsing on them, not them slipping and falling.
at there age i still finding a word to tell how i love my crush while them working hard for there self and the society.

Yikes. So risky to take these boys from their home like this. It can either go good or really really bad. Likely will be worse for at least one of them sadly. I hope they fit in with the children alright and are grown and well now. They were trafficked right out of their home.
