    After 25 years with no MC, the G310GS is perfect. Light enough to pick up - I have done that 10 times. I'm 74 and love the dirt roads

  • @Liberty4Ever
    @Liberty4Ever 3 года назад +7

    I bought my G310GS for exactly what BMW marketing recommends - trips around town, back roads, dirt roads, gravel roads and light off road. I don't ride highways (motorways). The baby GS can cruise at highway speed but it's wrung out and buzzing a bit. I strap a 55 liter roll top waterproof backpack to the rack and pillion and hardly know it's back there, and that's all I need for ultralight primitive camping. I ride slow off road so the soft suspension and alloy rims aren't a problem for me. In fact, I prefer them. My hard core dual sport days are behind me.
    I love my baby GS.

    Very cool looking bike. Everyone calls these bikes beginners bikes but I see more older guys buying them because they want a small adventure bike that can take them down some easy trails and back roads. My days of pulling a full on dirt bike out of mud holes are over. These small bikes are easy to ride on dirt roads and very capable on the highway. I went with the Kawasaki Versys x300 for its twin cyl motor. It's a nice change from my big cruiser. These little entry bikes my just turn out to be big sellers to the baby boomers than anything else. And like you I am not interested in fighting with a big adventure bike while off road. I always thought that was crazy. Great to see other small bikes out there....

    Thanks for the fabulous review. I've had one on order since March of this year. Been riding 35 years and have had over 30 bikes.....so not just for beginners as you said :). I plan on using it for daily commuting, touring and just having fun! I love being able to use all the power of a bike, which small bikes can and will do. Currently in my stable here in Canada: 2013 Ninja 300, 1987 Yamaha TZR250, 1986 Yamaha YSR50 and 1988 Yamaha TDR50 :)

    So much fun doing light offroad, but this would be a great city bike for the daily commute. Has enough power and is light and nimble, great for filtering and getting out of tight spots. I can totally see why I want one... LOL!

    7:02 for the crash :) - no man you're not an idiot at all, we all did (do) it - standing up would have helped to increase the grip and the control - it does look very light to pick up and those HP are more than enough for some easy green lanes on a sunday morning

    Hello from the USA (sorry) Loved this vid / review you done on the little GS.
    Yours and a few more and I knew I had to have one. So 2 weeks ago I got a new one.
    I am early 40's and this makes the 22nd bike I have owned. And in all honesty, I think it is the most *FUN* to ride, most overall enjoyable, and 3rd most comfortable I have owned!
    ( The Vstrom with a aftermarket seat, and my Honda GL being 1&2)
    Thank you for this awesome vid. :-)

    I'm keeping my f800gs but cool to see a beginners bike at an affordable price. Would be great if they made a twin that fits in between the 310 and the f700gs/f800gs

      Ed DeBolt Its funny, that's what everyone wants, but apparently the manufacturers don't believe in the market

    • @samteenoise
      @samteenoise 7 лет назад +3

      Well, there was the 650gs, which had some flaws due to the downgrade from the "f" class to the the "g" class, and now it has been discontinued. Such a shame

    • @hommebizzare
      @hommebizzare 7 лет назад +4

      Are we talking the Sertao or the ordinary gs? I, and i believe many other, want an even smaller bike. 400-500cc and a weight around 140kg

    • @samteenoise
      @samteenoise 7 лет назад +1

      Martin Fisker until 2012 there was almost no need for a dakar version (dakar is the old sertao version). After that, the 650gs dropped in many little aspects, suspension, wheels, lights, display, buttons on the handle, the price didn't even drop, and there was almost no coverage for model by the manufacturer whatsoever (some people here in germany even thought the 650 died in 2012, and had no idea that the g650 exists). It still is an awesome bike, I personally had great fun with it during my first steps on riding, but there is a disappointing difference between the old f650 an the "new" g650 (even the sertao). I agree, 500 would be perfect, but 140kg is way too light for a gs in my opinion (plus it would be almost impossible to achieve). I believe 500cc, 180kg, 50hp would be a dreamy bike for a biker with a little bit of experience

    • @hommebizzare
      @hommebizzare 7 лет назад

      Max Teichelmann Maybe i will have to try and old GS one day. I ride a transalp, which gets close to 180 (probably 190) when low on fuel, and thats fine and dandy untill you have to get over a wet log in mud. Modern bikes are much easier to handle even though they are heavier, but in the given situation, almost only the raw weight matters - and skill of course, but i cant buy that :)

    Hi mate, i have to say that the A2 motorcycles are more then enough on the dirt, 35 to 47 horsepower is plenty of power for beginners or an intermediate drivers and if you'll be able to master the A2 bikes off-road you will do the fun of your life.
    BTW thanks for a great review as always and the best content ever sir.

    Thanks John.
    I've only just come back to riding after years away because of this gem of a bike.
    I started in the 1970's with a TS 90J Suzuki... Always loved little bikes despite the idea in Oz that you didn't have any balls if you rode anything less than a 750.
    Well, been there too and road-raced even sidecars as the monkey!
    My G310GS is seriously the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. Leaves all the tin-tops for dead from the traffic lights and is totally happy on dirt roads. The same build as you, what more could you want?
    Dorky? No, it's just a great bike!

    Spoke wheels would be better

    • @Liberty4Ever
      @Liberty4Ever 3 года назад

      I initially thought spoke wheels would be better but this is a lightweight bike that's not meant to be ridden hard and fast off road. Riding at slower ADV speed, even with 40 pounds of camping equipment and tools, instead of racing on a dual sport, shouldn't damage the alloy rims or bottom out the soft suspension. If your idea of adventure is racing on technical single track, then yes, a more hardcore dual sport or dirt bike will be better. I'm 60 and always rode smaller dual sport bikes. My hard riding days are over and the baby GS is almost perfect for me and how I ride. I do wish it had a 6 gallon fuel tank instead of a 3 gallon tank.

I even give up my suzuki DR650 dream for this because I never owned a new bike in my life and its something I want to try.

      @abhishekilke9426 6 лет назад

      The Versys is more of a tourer because of the engine characteristics, whereas this will be good on both the highways and offroad imo.

    your crash looked almost staged because your go pro was suddenly off the bike and on the side of the road. not sure what to think about your offroading style.

    • @vagabondroller
      @vagabondroller 5 лет назад

      Meh, maybe it was that bump that threw you off your line to the inside but it certainly was convenient that it happened right in front of the camera. Anyway it was a great review and it got me to check out this little bike but in the end it’s just not quite powerful enough to keep up with traffic on the interstate.

    • @bennettsbikesocial
      @bennettsbikesocial  5 лет назад

      I can assure you that it wasn't staged. Rich (the video guy) was trying to get some action footage at good spots. It was my third or fourth pass and I remember saying "watch this - I can get the back out". There were two small crests in that section and I bounced the front up a bit as I tried to get the gas on to look like I knew what I was doing (clearly I didn't). With the front not getting any traction, and trying to kick the back a bit, it all washed out on me. It'd be pretty stupid to force myself to crash, not least because there's then the walk of shame to find the BMW techs and apologise for the fact that they have to get it looking brand new again for the next wave of journalists in a world launch. It's surprisingly nippy - happy to cruise at 70mph, but if you're predominantly on the motorway it's not the best option. John

    thats not an off road track mate, its just un-sealed road...

    • @bennettsbikesocial
      @bennettsbikesocial  7 лет назад +6

      True, but as I said - it's as off-road as I go. Of course, if we're talking accurately then most of what any of us would ride in the UK isn't 'off-road' at all. Any byway or green lane is a road. The argument is that this is an adventure bike, and its 'off-tarmac' capabilities are, for me at least, excellent. It's no motocrosser of course, but I'd say that for my abilities (which I'd consider average), it's as capable as the R1200GS. And I'm far more likely to wander off the beaten track on this... I owned a CRM250 years aso. That's more of an off-roader, but it was hell on the road. My WR250 wasn't that great on road either. And that broke me. John

      I rode a much lighter dirt track in France on my XSR700 when I took it from England to Spain on back roads... it definitely wasn't as easy as on the G310GS! John
