  • In the middle of preparing for the last show of his “When It’s My Time” tour, Brent Cobb took some time to share some wit and wisdom with us-as well as some insights into the creative process that resulted in his gospel record “And Now, Let’s Turn to Page…” The interview would finish up not too long before he had to step off of the soon-to-be-homeward-bound tour bus and head on into City Winery in Nashville for a night filled to the gills with gospel songs and grooves.
“I always wanted to make a Southern gospel album because that’s what everybody did-George Jones and Hank Sr. and Dolly and everybody,” Brent said of the origins of the record, which was produced by his cousin Dave Cobb at RCA Studio A in Nashville, with the intention of recreating the sensation of being home and being surrounded by the gospel songs that shaped both his sense of spirituality and his songwriting.
“It doesn’t matter if we’re in Manhattan, it doesn’t matter if we’re in D.C., it doesn’t matter if we’re in the South,” Brent recollected about the reception to “And Now, Let’s Turn to Page…” and the way in which audiences in every city seemed to always end up grooving to gospel songs like “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and “Are You Washed in the Blood?” There always seemed to be something in songs like “Blessed Be the Tie That Binds” that bound the audience together-maybe even long after Brent had ended up homeward bound and home again.
“If you believe in music, then you can get down with it.”
