Joel McHale (Animal Control, Community) joins us again this week to spread out on the couch, share a bunch of laughs, and admire a room full of memorabilia. Joel talks about his experience with ADHD in this industry and how it has impacted his approach as an actor, including being the lead on Community. We also talk about keeping passion in your career, finding joy in restoring cars, and fist fights with Chevy Chase.

"Advanced Horseplay" sounds like a Community episode title
Alt name for the pillows vs blankets episodes
@@termitered nailed it lmao
Immediately what I thought
The bit at the end made me think it happened during the comparative religion episode.
I think that was the point lol
I imagine Joel McHale gets tired of everyone asking him about Chevy Chase all the time.
definitely not during this time when he's trying to sell a book.
@@bikingchupei2447that book came out in 2016... so no, it's not like he's on a promo tour.
i'm sure. but really what other questions are they going to ask that he will actually answer. How much fun was it playing with Allison Brie? Flirty and hot during years of shooting. Who might have hooked up with who? You had a great show with a great cast, and 1 of that cast was known to be a pain in the butt, grumpy and problems on the show. You aren't really going to have stories with others who weren't problems on a show.
He seems pretty keen to talk about it. He knows that him openly talking shit about another actor will drive views to these videos and his book consequently.
yes. I could see this but I also don’t think he gets tired of telling everyone how crappy Chevy chase is.
"POP POP!" - That's what Chevy's shoulder said when Joel dislocated it.
Underrated comment
So what you are saying is Chevy couldn't handle a hit of such... Magnitude?
@@protheu5epic
😂
Welll done
I never understood why someone like Chevy would try so fucking hard to ruin his reputation and entire legacy
He doesn't care. You tend not to when you're completely and utterly self centered and absorbed.
But that was his reputation from the very beginning.
sad lonely man speedrun
I'm not a licensed medical professional, but it's the internet, so I'm going to diagnose. I think he's a narcissist. Not in the way people usually toss the word at people who are just jerks. I think he's a clinical narcissist. It's not that he could care about other people but chooses not to. He is incapable of it.
@@alansteelIt's because in his mind he's a great guy, very talented and well liked. He can't imagine any other possibility.
Chevy was definitely NOT STREETS AHEAD.
You are streets behind for saying this.
🤣🤣🤣 Thank you for that laugh! 😁
This isn’t a thing, it will never be a thing
Chevy sounds like the opposite of Batman
But he won at Dungeons and Dragons.
And it was Advanced!
I always felt like Chevy originally amplified his own asshole tendencies as a joke and then just forgot that he was joking one day.
😂😂😂 I believe it
I used to think that, as well as it being his own confusion at the newer generational form of comedy, and just a strong miscommunication at that attempt at relating and imitation. One of the outtakes had him saying something like, "And then you get slapped in the face.", and it was after another outtake where Joel slapped Donald and no one was expecting it, and everyone just started laughing after Donald laughed. Plus my dad is at the age where he thinks we're all on the same page joking, when he actually said something dickish, so, maybe all that booze caught up?
Yea, that's really good take on it now that I think back to his snl day's
I've always assumed this too
@@HellInternAKACandyMDi agree other than it being imitation of newer comedian, bc according to the actors who hate chevy chase video, he has those mean-spirited jokes in person in that way since his snl days, so i think he's always been personally into that kind of stuff. Just seeing other people do it, as in your example, brings it back to the forefront of his mind, like a former heacy drinker seeing someone else enjoying a beer.
Chevy was so good as Pierce! The funniest he's ever been, shame he couldn't see that. There's a whole generation that know him mostly through Community.
Right?! It's a shame he couldn't see the show and his role for the gems they were.
@@tonifloyd9420tbf to chevy it never seemed like he phoned it in as pierce. maybe he started to and thats where the issues started and eventually written out but from what the audience saw he was pierce.
My theory is that he knows Pierce is written to be a *mostly* unlikeable, curmudgeonly asshole who's the old fogey behind the times and the butt of many, many jokes. And people LOVED his character, way more than anything he's done since the 80s. His pride couldn't handle that so he threw a years-long tantrum. Chevy Chase really is Pierce Hawthorne, and on some level he knows it.
His acting as Pierce is his BEST acting. I really think he was playing himself. (An old man who doesn't like or understand anything, but still wants people to include him and admire him)
Community pretty much helped him getting known outside of the US. I'm Malaysian and only after watching Community I found out Chevy is actually a big deal. Or used to be.
I can only assume he would've blown his head off if he hears me say, "we know Bill Murray though...."
I remember a clip of Joel talking about Chevy and how it this could have been a real renaissance for Chevy, but he just was so angry that he was doing TV, that he couldn't recognize that he was on a very good and popular show.
Very good show, yes. Popular ... not back then.
TBF none of them knew it was a popular show. In their pandemic script read of Pierce's funeral, Donald Glover admitted he just treated his time on the set as horseplaying with his friends. He thought nobody was watching the show.
@@romxxiithey kinda knew. iirc Gillian Jacobs knew the show was very popular on iTunes and they were trying to use those different viewers to argue for keeping the show. I believe it was as viewed as shows like Parks and Rec at the time, but Parks and Rec had more NBC people involved in it so it got a pass.
I mean, the show was always almost getting canceled tho
@@comettripper it was back when NBC was chasing CBS though. They started and cancelled tons of shows in the 2010s. Part of the issue was that it was during the streaming transition. Community had plenty of online viewers, but broadcasters were still obsessed with linear viewers.
I love that as Joel gets older he's being more blunt about Chevy, finally some actual stories haha
It took long enough, years of him saying he wasn’t that bad… But I guess that now he has a book to sell and the story changes
@@juliemance4897 His book came out many years ago, it is nothing recent at all. The chapter he talks about in the book is moreso describing how he accidentally dislocated Chevy's shoulder. He does talk about how stubborn chevy could be but honestly the chapter still is respectful of chevy. Definitley not the tell-all its made out to be.
On a side note: the book is extremely funny and worth a read if youre at all into biographies
i feel like Joel is tired of being asked of Chevy Chase at this point
Maybe...although apparently he just wrote a book with an entire chapter about him, so it sounds like he still has SOMETHING to say.
@@jerodasthe didn’t just write the book tho it came out nearly a decade ago
He used to respond very diplomatically to Chevy questions and now he's like "nah fuck that guy".
Gillian jacobs seems like the sweetest person in the world, so if she doesnt like someone, they must be a jerk.
right??!!
Agreed. Gillian is a sweetheart. Chevy can kick rocks.
I worked a day with her on “Love.” She wasn’t pleasant, but it might have been a bad day.

All the Community stories about Chevy just make me think he probably deserved that punch from Bill Murray in 1978.
And Bill Murray himself is kind of an asshole, so that really says something about him.
He definitely did. He always acted like he was better than anyone else everytime he went back to host. There is also the infamous story where he kept spewing homophobic slurs at the only gay cast member in the 80s
Back in 78 we all thought he had to have deserved that punch. Chevy and Bill seemed to have very similar attitudes, though... 😎
God I miss Joel McHale and The Soup. My wife and I used to watch that religiously and when it finally went away completely it totally broke my heart.
I caught the show by accident in the mid-00's, and I was hooked. I hated when it went off.
same. i still throw out the callbacks randomly and it confuses everybody who didn't watch. "my vajajay is painin'" "chicken tetrazzini" mankini etc.
I will throw out "Kiss My Ass!"
We need another show like The Soup.

Sucks when talented people are terrible people
"Hate the artist, love the art." -- Adolf.
Was just thinking of the same thing.
@thestokes91 And also Chevy Chase.
John Lennon’s a good example. One of the most beloved singer-songwriters of all time who made so much great music alongside the Beatles and by himself… was also an absolute piece of shit husband and father.
Most talented people are terrible people. A lot of them don't know how to deal with other human beings so they act like jerks.
It's a shame Chevy was so hard to work with on Community. He was one of the funniest characters w/o a doubt and Pierce's presence was definitely missed in Season 5 for me.
yep loved his character he had some amazing episodes. But no one likes the guy, you can just look back at his other movies and those he co-stared with those movies didn't like him and never kept up with him again either. There is a reason for that, he isn't a likable guy. Martin Short? Steve Martin? best friends, never had anything to do with Chevy after the movies. SNL costars hated him. John, Bill Murray, there are books of SNL stars who gave their opinion on Chase.. "Monster" is one of them.
I've heard Joel say in other interviews how good Chevy was on the show and how it was just a shame that he could embrace/enjoy/appreciate the fact that he was on TV and not in a movie.
It was genius how Dan Harmon basically had Chevy play himself
Chevy Chase always plays himself
Unless Chevy improvised a lot I think anyone could have played Pierce. One of the funniest Pierce episodes is when they’re going over his will and Chevy wasn’t even present that whole episode. The writers showed that pierce’s line delivered by a straight faced monotone lawyer instead of Chevy still hit.
I love hearing these different actors and their war stories dealing with Chevy
Didn’t Bill Murray punch Chevy in the face back in the day?
@tomburress4928 Yes! You should check out Pete Holmes Show Paul Scheer's chevy chase stories
@@tomburress4928that story changes depending on who you ask 😂
@@ruule I love that Paul, who has always seemed to be probably one of the nicest people, has three random incidents ranging from seeing him demean an snl intern over a No Doubt autograph to Chevy telling his mom “f*** you lady” at a liquor store when she tried to praise him lmao
@@tomburress4928 Bill also liked to punch his ex-wife.
The outtake of him dislocating his shoulder is so funny. Chevy just whimpers "I'M SO OLD"
To be fair the phrase "Don't talk in my face" is legitimately hilarious.
Should be a title for a podcast
Can't wait to read Joel's memoirs "Waiting to McHale"
Good one!
Lest we forget Joel actually *played* Chevy in "A Stupid and Futile Gesture." Which, yeah, that's a lot to unpack.
And got Chevy’s blessing!
He nailed that role 😂
I guess he really *was* Pierce Hawthorne, screen of stage and star.
The role really captured something about him. Which makes it funny he didn't seem to like it
I heard sometime they would put his trailer rants directly into the script lol
I always got the feeling that the writers made Pierce more like Chevy as time went on. In the early episodes he was mostly just a clueless old man who didn't realize he wasn't cool anymore; but then from season two onwards he became more of a bitter, sexist, racist asshole.
Be a jerk and you'll never act a day in your life.
I think it was Harmon who said that he would put things Chevy said on set into the scripts more and more. Chevy wouldn't notice but came back with the complaint that his character was turning into an obnoxious a-hole. So I guess: Chevy Chase doesn't actually know what he's like (only way he can love himself so much).
I love the fact that there's a chapter in Joel's book about 'How To Fight Chevy Chase'. Lmao!
"How not to become the Man who killed Chevy Chase in self-defence".
I know right! All so unfortunate 🙁
Didn't know Joel wrote a book - I'm getting it from my library immediately. I hope he narrates the audiobook.
Getting it from where?
It is a really enjoyable book. Joel is the one who reads it
It'd have been cool if he paid Chevy to narrate.
I assume you meant getting it FOR your library. I seriously doubt joel's audiobook is going to be part of your underfunded local library's yearly selection.
@@VoxVeritasXXXI just checked Libby and my library network has it, most libraries will order the book for you or get it from a nearby library and put it on hold for you if you just ask.
I never watched any of his sitcoms, but Joel Mchael on his own is so funny. Love the Soup stuff he does
I don't watch sitcoms either. But I've watched every episode of Community at least 5 times
@@schmiggidy Community is almost a work of art. I see different things each time I view it. I can't think of any other show like that.
Community is one of my favorite sitcoms of all time. It can be uneven (you can look into the BTS of why) and there are other sitcoms that may have been good for longer, but it's bell curve of Seasons 2 and 3 when it hits its stride are absolute works of art and just on a different level. I love it all though.
the land cruiser shirt plus the thing about buying cars pre-pandemic tells me that joel mchale is probably a car guy
And it's ironic the guy he had problems with is named Chevy...
he was a judge on a Hot Wheels show and his Land Cruiser has been featured in a couple magazines a believe
I think Chevy probably has undiagnosed and quite severe bipolar disorder. Joel even hints at it here where he says, “I mean, he had good days.” The fact that he’s so volatile…?
The sad thing is that Chevy was legitimately GREAT on Community, and he’ll never realize it, because he didn’t understand the show.
Why does the interviewer look like young Chevy?
The interviewer?
How dare you. That's Lex muthafckin Luthor from Smallville AND DCAU Flash!

man joel is so chill and very funny. Love his vibe
I am 1000% getting this book right now.
The crazy part about this is that I believe Joel has mentioned his relationship with Chevy was less contentious than most.
yeah in the past he was more cautious about it and let it know he kind of got along with him, without excusing his behavior.
I genuinely attribute that to Chevy being a racist and sexist old man. Joel is another 'peer' as a white man leading actor.
Chevy wasn't able to use racial slurs against him so it prob was more mild
Chevy was horrible and quite racist toward Donald Glover, and did similarly to Yvette Nicole Brown.
They were the closest in age, so Chevy at least could probably relate to Joel more than the millennials in the cast.

The sad thing is Chevy's character in Community (Pierce) was my favorite.
Chevy looked pissed off the entire "Community" run.
there's some bloopers where he either messes up his lines (gets pissed at others for it), totally crosses a line or deliberately ruins shots ... first season everyone's like "Yeah, that's Chevy!" but by season 3 you can see how people start to become either annoyed with or embarrassed for him.

Thank you Michael and Joel! ❤
Joel looks great. I haven't seen him in a while. I remember seeing his stand up in Jersey many years ago. Funny dude.
Super sad to hear this, because Community is my favourite show of all time and I always felt Pierce was a very important part of the shows dynamic.
But I'd rather watch the upcoming movie without him and know the study group aren't suffering.
Yeah as much as I’m susceptible to fan service and bringing back old characters, it’s best to move on without him.
Chevy Chase is a GIGANTIC azzhole, really has been for years. Massive ego, very disrespectful to fellow actors. He let all the praise go to his head and come out much worse on the other side. Shame, he's a comic genius. Caddyshack will always be classic to me...
Joel McHale has been my crush since The Soup 🤩🤩
Darn it Ken, stop pretending to be other people.

I remember Joel from Almost Live. Great to see him doing well.
The end of this video had me picturing Chevy as Tyler Durden and Joel as the Narrator 😂

Drew McWeeny spent a lot of time with John Carpenter writing movies for him, and Drew said that MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN is the ONLY movie of his career that Carpenter refuses to talk about.

Two laugh out loud moments here. 1. "Don't talk in my face" and 2. "You would have killed him though"
Im always curious why certain people like Beverly D Angelo or Dan Ackroyd continue to be friends with Chevy. Is Chevy only nice to very few select people or do they feel sorry for him?
I think they know he's probably bi polar. He really does seem to be an off/on switch and if you catch him at the wrong time, look out. Long time friends with knowledge of that probably cut him an enormous amount of slack...
It's always disappointing when you hear the behind the scenes stuff that went on. I think Chevy was almost always very funny on Community. The negative stories don't take away from that performance for me, but it certainly doesn't add to it in any good way.
Joel is awesome in the horror movie, Deliver Us From Evil. I want him in more serious roles.

Joel got his start off a sketch comedy show out of Seattle in the early 1990s titled Almost Live. It would air right before SNL every Saturday in the northwest region. Some of the recurring skits they had on were hilarious. Bill Nye the science guy also was a cast member for a while. My favorites were Billy Quan and The Rug Emporium.
And he was so bad he killed the entire show! Ok not really but he did join more towards the end of its run. Bill Nye was there from the start.

Love these stories. My good friend was a casting director on Community and I've asked her multiple times about the Chevy rumors. Thankfully, she's a far better person than am I and has always practiced an admirable level of discretion.
Cool job that show had the best cast
Just watched the hotel clip from 2 years ago and this is Michael's interviewing McHale shirt.
I worked with Mr. Mchale, and he was so nice. Even when the cameras weren't rolling and he could have gotten away with being a big shot, he was cool. The reason I say this is because I believe what he's saying and it's heartbreaking to hear what Mr. Chase was like to work with. He's still an icon and I still love his SNL work and movies, but that sucks to hear.
