  • They couldn’t keep her safe.
A 9-year-old Milwaukee girl who asked police officers in her neighborhood if they could keep her safe days before being shot has died.
Za’layia Jenkins battled for her life for nearly two weeks after a stray bullet flew through her living room and struck her on May 5.
She died Monday afternoon, a day before her 10th birthday.
Just days before her death, Za’layia asked Milwaukee Police Capt. Shunta Boston-Smith, who was walking through the little girl’s neighborhood, whether police could keep her safe.
“Sadly, that question was answered tonight,” Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
The errant bullet that killed Za’layia had originated from a shootout between two sparring groups armed with rifles and pistols.
No arrests have been made in the investigation and police are still looking for the driver of a green Jeep Cherokee, who may have information about the shooting.
Before the little girl’s death on Monday afternoon, Za’layia’s family had planned a march in her honor on Tuesday, the day that would have been her 10th birthday.
Her family still held the march in memoriam.
“Today is her day. It’s her birthday so we want friends to come march with us and show Lay Lay you love her,” Precious Boone, the young girl’s aunt, told local network TMJ 4, when interviewed at the march.
Homicides in Milwaukee have skyrocketed in recent years.
According to a Journal-Sentinel investigation, 145 people were murdered in Milwaukee last year, the highest homicide rate since 1993, when 160 people were killed.
The spike in homicides in 2015 was a staggering 69% increase from 2014.
