  • After 5 days of snowshoeing across the Fulufjället plateau (using our packrafts as pulkas), followed by 2 days of packrafting on Görälven, we focus our attention on the Fuluälven river (also known as Fulan). Whereas Görälven circumvents Fulufjället from northwest to southeast, Fuluälven flows east of the plateau.
On our first day on Fuluälven, we put in nearby the village of Mörkret and paddle to the Strupen bridge. Whereas we exactly hit the peak of spring melt on Görälven, we miss it by over a week on Fuluälven. Flow is still more than decent enough for comfortable paddling though.
Fuluälven's natural environment (forests and distant snow-capped hills) is similar to Görälven. Today's stretch starts out nice and easy with nearly flat water. Afterwards, we enter long but straightforward class I-II rapids. After another section with calm water, we arrive at the Strupen rapid. This rapid is class III and not to be underestimated. Evert follows a line towards the right, which avoids an initial large wave, but goes through chaotic whitewater afterwards. I opt to take the large wave head on and subsequently pass through a somewhat more structured wave train. We both get through successfully.
Return to Mörkret is on foot along a track west of the river. The track is interrupted at the Göljån site, where passage is complicated and chaotic, due to the consequences of a natural disaster that occurred in 1997.
Total length of the trip is around 34 km. We spot two deer and one moose cow.
