    I think the title and the first couple minutes are there to target confirmation bias. People who smoke are less likely to watch a video called "Smoking is bad y'all". That and kids/teens. Kids are more likely to get invested in a video that at least initially seems to say something "scandalous" that their parents would get mad at.

      On the other hand smoking is less and less acceptable. Very dangerous, perhaps one of the most dangerous addictions period.
      Me I'm very for thinking about addiction constructively. Not all addictions are bad things and some can be the end of you. It's important to ask about the value something brings to life rather then if it is addictive.
      Coffee for instance, i love the stuff. Not just for the caffeine. It's addictive in multiple ways and yet it brings enjoyable rituals, it's Delicious. It is constructively social and increases productivity .

    I smoked for 10 years of my life straight. I tried numerous drugs, almost every drug that isn't injected. Tobacco is 100% my drug of choice, nothing makes me feel like it. I could smoke 2 packs easily, then I moved to rolling cigs but I could also still smoke almost the entire day, sometimes chainsmoking. I quitted 7 years ago, it was the hardest addiction to beat, it made me physically ill for a long time. That need never truly leaves, it stays there forever, and it's not pretty. I wasted hundreds of thousands of euros killing myself with a drug. DO NOT PICK A CIGARETTE, it's the most addictive drug ever.

    I started smoking at 16 and around 26 I failed to quit nicotine, but switched to a vape. Who knows what that's doing to me, here five years later.
    Nicotine is horribly addictive. I had to quit for my two pregnancies and picked it right back up as I got overwhelmed with raising babies. ☹️ I'm ashamed that I can't seem to let it go and have so many excuses for why it feels impossible right now (I have had some abnormally severe stressors for the past two years that really aren't putting me in a good place mentally, such as my mom declining and at some point will be dying of the horrific disease ALS, for example). I know there are no valid excuses, I just can't explain how difficult it can be to quit in times of great stress. Thankfully life wasn't so stressful during the times I was pregnant.
    Anyway, I've cut my nicotine level in half, so I am taking the steps, slowly. I hope anyone out there who's struggling with addiction gets the support and motivation they need to quit before it becomes a serious medical problem.

    Like, I wanna point out, the video title and the video itself is probably one of the least obnoxious anti-smoking campaigns I have ever seen. As a smoker, anti-smoking ads typically leave me feeling dehumanized and disinterested in both quitting and regarding non-smokers as even human. Like, you get judgy with me, I will get judgy with you, and we won't get anywhere and we will spin wheels, you will leave feeling inadequate and disgusted at humans, I will leave feeling oppressed and disenfranchised. This benefits no one. More ads like this would be incredibly helpful since it would actually welcome smokers back into society, and we could actually work on constructing a world better for everyone rather then judging each other.

    Former smoker here: there's a common myth that when you quit smoking, you become angrier and more aggressive. I think that myth came about from people who quit smoking during the rise of leaded gasoline. They no longer had the lead in their cigarettes but they still had the lead from vehicle emissions, which we know 'lead' (pun not intended) to increased aggression. I started and stopped smoking after the end of leaded gasoline and retrospectively, my feelings of anger and aggression throughout my life sharply coincide with when I started and stopped smoking. Even the weight gain aspect seems to be a myth in my case (it was three years later until that happened, when the pandemic started and I simultaneously found a full flavor beer that I loved)
    ALSO: nobody ever told me that when I quit smoking that the regrowth of cilia hairs would be INCREDIBLY ITCHY. Imagine the itchiness you get after shaving, when the stubble starts to regrow, but it's inside your lungs. That was exponentially worse than the withdrawal phase. If I had to turn someone off from smoking, I wouldn't mention the cancer, gum loss, any of that. I'd mention the freaking lung stubble.

    Interesting reaction. The first time I heard that there are radioactive compounds inside cigarette smoke. Which is very interesting as the carcinogenic effects of the chemicals present are widely known and mentioned multiple times in biology lessons/textbooks. Makes complete sense though. However, in terms of health effects it is not clear whether it is the carcinogenic effect of the chemical compounds that is greater than the carcinogenic effect of the radiation. The inflammation caused by nicotine leading to emphysema is also a very important factor. The reason alveoli stop being able to expand and contract properly is due to elastin damage caused by the inflammation. Regarding 8:10, the video is slightly misleading, but ultimately correct. Goblet cells are a type of epithelial cells which produce mucous inside the major airways(the trachea, bronchi, and larger bronchioles) and the intestines. They are not present in the alveoli and smaller airways which was not explicitly stated. Their name comes from their appearance. What produces the alveolar surfactant that makes the walls of the alveoli not collapse are type II pneumocytes.

    In Austria we have a region in lower Austria where natural Uraniumore is very present in surface near rocks, living there adds around 0.004msv per year compared to the average dose.
    A small part of radiation is still caused by the leftovers of the Chernobyl fallout, that partly came down over large areas of Austria, it adds ~0.002msv at some places even up to 0.008msv/year, measured in 2022.
    Its not very much but you still can find decayproducts from Chernobyl in the drinkingwater.
    The highest dose that exceeds the average doses comes from radon gas, depending on the region it varies between 1.2msv up to 10msv/year.

    In Australia, especially around factories, there are many workplaces that actually still implement "smoking-only breaks"... To clarify further, these breaks were and are (although less today), given ON TOP of breaks you are already given, so by smoking, you gain more breaks!
    We even have a word for it, "Smoko" pronounces smoke-oh , we'd use it like "yeah gonna go have a smoko soon" to refer to this. Although in modern day, many Australians will use the term smoko to mean any break from anything, not necessarily related to smoking at all anymore.
    Present day, they are quite controversial and many companies are trying to phase them out, not without backlash from a workforce that has grown accustomed to it!

    At the company I currently work at, while I don't believe there's a company stipulation that says smoking breaks are available for those who smoke, a number of my co-workers do take smoke breaks relatively often. Some of them only being 5 minutes apart. I do think some are getting in trouble for taking so many breaks but all in all there seems to be no policy towards outright banning it or lumping it as just a regular break. You just kind of take one whenever you need one.
    I who has never smoked and have intention of doing so finds this rather fascinating to witness. I'll see the same co-worker go out for a smoke break every 10 minutes like clockwork.

    I've been a smoker for 22 years and of those 22 years I've been trying to quit for about 18 of them. It's been a nightmare. Constantly stopping for sometimes days sometimes weeks on rare occasions months.. but always having a bad day and caving in. Doesn't help that everyone around me smokes so it's so easy to have one during a moment of weakness. I seriously don't think it's worth it to anyone whose considering taking it up even if it's just 'a few in social situations or with a coffee'

    5:00 thank you for explaining this part. For quite a while I was wondering how these particles were actually getting into the cigarettes and if radioactive particles related warnings were actually true.
    Though if tobbaco plants absorb those from air and earth, I doubt this is the only plant that does that. Making me wonder what other plants do that as well, especially edible ones - it probably doesn't matter if such particles are in leaves, fruits or seeds.
    It probably doesn't make much difference if radioactive isotopes get stuck in lungs because of tar mess/stains or simply eaten. And if that were to be true, I wonder why it is only a bad thing in case of cigarettes and silly trivia in case of radioactive bananas.

    • @kruassamka
      @kruassamka Месяц назад

      The lungs are indeed very easy to damage (for example, there are a number of substances, such as asbestos, that are inert and cannot cause any damage anywhere except the lungs; these fine substances are the reason why many factories now need to use masks with filters for constant wear), in different from the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, bananas contain another, less dangerous isotope of potassium-40; almost all chemical substances have such twin brothers, but they will never come close in danger and radiation power to the truly radioactive substances at the bottom of the periodic table.

    • @Mr.Mojito-parrotlord
      @Mr.Mojito-parrotlord 28 дней назад

      Basically the same as smoking but not inside the lungs.
      Radiation Concerns
      Dipping tobacco contains naturally occurring radioactive substances such as:
      Polonium-210
      Lead-210
      These radioactive materials come from the fertilizer used in tobacco farming and from the decay of radon gas in the soil where the tobacco is grown. When users place the tobacco in their mouths, these substances can be absorbed into the body, contributing to the risk of cancer. The presence of radioactive materials, though in small amounts, is an additional carcinogenic factor that compounds the risks associated with other harmful chemicals in tobacco.
      Hope I helped and if you may please quit. Be healthy

    So the radioactive material comes from the soil? So that means fruits and vegetables contain them as well?

    • @kruassamka
      @kruassamka Месяц назад

      The process of deposition of heavy metals in plant tissues must be associated with their metabolism, I can only assume that most of these substances are concentrated in the leaves/trunks; at least when it comes to radioactive metals getting into the soil, I remember the ban on excursions in Chernobyl to touch green plants, and in particular to go down into the vegetation from concrete paths, which is due to the fact that radioactive material has long been washed away from concrete surfaces by rainwater ; Thus, it ended up in the soil around and, due to the vital activity of plants, it ends up in their tissues, to the point that there is a safe radioactive background on the asphalt, but an increased background in the thickets.

    So are there any "carcinogens" in cigarettes that are "carcinogens" explicitly because they dose you in radiation? Are there by chance ANY carcinogens that follow that trend?

    • @kruassamka
      @kruassamka Месяц назад

      not all carcinogens are radioactive, the property of a group of these substances is that they can cause molecular damage, injuring DNA in particular, radioactive radiation does this, but some fine substances can cause the same damage mechanically; approximately as if an image printed on a printer fades and the colors disappear in the sun (this is as if DNA is exposed to radioactive radiation), or the image is rubbed with sandpaper and partially erased (this is how other carcinogens work), in general the mechanisms are different, but the result is the same - an error in DNA replication and subsequent mutation of the cell exposed to the substance occurred

And presenting it is "good" at the beginning just the right amount of time to get your attention and get you hook with all the interesting animations just the right amount of time to make you keep watching. Coming from an ex cigarette addict 🙂
    I still like to smoke a few over the weekend with friends just for "pleasure", but after seeing it explained in all the gory details, I wanna stop even doing that. Better eat some snacks, or even an apple 🙂

    So, tobacco leaves containing radioactive isotopes of certain metals, which they get from the soil they grow in.
    What about vegetables? Granted the stomach and intestines are less fragile compared to lung tissue but still, you still ingest the alpha particle emitters.
    Also growing the tobacco or vegetables in a hydrophonic system (not in dirt but freehanging roots) should prevent a lot of those radioisotopes to get into them, no?
    Also sorry to hear about your premature loss of your dad, one of my uncles currently battles with lung cancer. And while he did smoke alot, it's alot more likely its the exposure to asbestos and nasty chemicals onboard ships while he worked as a chief marine engineer that has caused it.
