Wish I could paint like you do. But I guess that isn't possible sense we are all different. I just hope one day my paintings will get a lot better in detail and depth. Who wants a full Landscape painting DVD? And before I get started on production hit me up with some replies here about subjects for landscape you would like to see. Think global and interesting! Variety is good! Go!
Yes! For some reason, landscapes scare me more than any other subject. Mountainous landscapes and seascapes (which seems to be what attracts you anyway) would be my vote. British Columbia or Norwegian coast, if we need to be specific.
Excellent. So with those subjects in mind I could go for NZ again (because I've been there) and talk about mass, perspective, depth and light. A lot of the same principles will apply. Great suggestion! Thanks Alun!
South Island looks excellent for this purpose. Never been there, now I desperately want to. Once thing I would like you to explain in your DVD. You showed making a series of thumbnails to work out composition, but how did those thumbnails relate to what you could actually see? I mean, where you walking about looking from different angles and sketching them, or were you in the same place but imagining that a mountain was a different shape, I wasn't sure. Just how much do you look to do en plein air, and how much is in the studio. Stuff like that.
Hello Andrew.....I am a retired professional Director and Consul. Being born in the South Island of NZ as part of my bucket list, I chose learning fly fishing and painting NZ South Island landscapes. One of my greatest successes was when I discovered your videos. I have been an avid fan ever since. You have inspired, motivated and taught me so much. You have given me so much pleasure from learning and progressing knowledge experience and importantly results. Thank you so very very much PS I am retired living on the Kapiti Coast. We are planning a motor home visit back to the South rugged landscape including many of the sites you have painted. I am looking forward to this so much Regards Doug
I can't tell you how much I appreciate these videos. I finally picked up a brush at 52 years old after watching my mother paint when I was young. Somehow I managed to find your videos and have consumed them greedily ever since. We're starting tomorrow using your videos with my kids in their homeschooling art classes. 10 of 10, sir. The manner in which you explain what it is that you're doing and why you happen to be doing it, and the simplicity with which you explain everything really makes sense to me. I've ordered a few new colors for my collection of paints based on your colors in your videos and have even written down your color formulae as you talk about them and am using the Gamblin paints since my kids are with me in my office/study where I work and paint. Great stuff overall. Thank you, sincerely.
You are truly talented not only as a painter or artist but also as a teacher. You do make it look easy. I hope to apply your teachings soon enough. Thank you for sharing such knowledge. May God bless you.
I really love and enjoy your videos, you are the best discovery on my search for art techniques, thank you so much, you even show the colors you use, oh wow I can't believe, you are so awesome.
Awesome paintings & teaching too. I paint for many years but not landscapes and I will start doing that guided by your videos. Thanks for your generosity of showing us all details without hiding the tricks.
Fantastic, coming from New Zealand I often forget to appreciate what is in front of me, it is not until I see images captured by photographers, film makers or artists such as yourself that I am truly in awe of what is on my doorstep. I have to say your trees do me in, absolutely blow me away. I look forward to following your adventures.
Andrew Tischler your paintings are amazing. You are a master of the landscape and an excellent teacher. Thank you very much for all the work that you are doing. I'm very very thankful for the opportunity you have given us. This video has inspired me tremendously. Thank you

Hi Andrew. I have just discovered your channel on RUclips and have just watched the videos on mediums and then the 3 New Zealand landscape videos. Thank you so much for making those available. You have inspired me to crack out the oils again (having convinced myself that I should work in Acrylic). Living in The South Island of NZ I understand your love of the place and am looking forward to putting your teachings into practice and capturing more of it myself. Again, sincere thanks. I love your work
Great information for a very late bloomer. I can't get enough of this valuable info. I have so many scenes in my head of places I visited in my life; and returning to a place of my youth last year triggered a desire to relive those landscapes by painting them. Thanks for giving me the courage to press on and at least enjoy the process. Thanks a bunch.
Thanks so much for the comment. Make sure to take breaks between episodes to paint pictures okay!

What I learned with this video is that I've been neglecting visiting New Zealand for too long - and a bunch of techniques! Really a wonderful place and very inspiring indeed.
You must go if you feel you need to. Words cannot say enough about NZ. You will need to take enough materials. The only art shop I found when on my 2nd trip was in Christchurch near the Uni. Make sure you have enough paper, sketch books, and time. To be honest you will never have enough. There is a painting waiting around every turn and twist. I lost count how many times there were several paintings in the 360 degrees of where I was standing. happy travelling.
I have been to NZ twice. Each time for 6 months. I have painted over most of NZ must mostly South Island. When I am stuck for what to paint I go to my s and sketches of NZ, a river or a lake always seems to get in the painting. Thanks for the demo, it brought back wonderful memories
Never cease to amaze me Andrew! Not only the incredible teaching value but the video capture, the shots, the music, I know all the extent you went to get all this excellence! The editing alone was a work of art! I'm super inspired! Thank you!
Andrew, Thanks so much for all of your instruction, and for your generous spirit. Yours are truly the best quality instructional videos out there. Both the in-depth videos and the quick clips are full of meaningful information and your love of the medium and subject matter make them a delight to watch. I am a long time professor of painting in New York, and I have learned something new from every one. I also refer my students to your site. I am also a lover of landscape painting, and find ways to work the genre into even my more "imaginative" flights of fancy. I'd like to make a request for a more in-depth look at painting clouds when you have the time. thanks again!
Hello Andrew! I want to thank you for inspiring me to paint once again. Not only am I inspired to paint, but you've caused me to look at things differently. In the past I only painted portraits. People and animals were my ONLY subjects. I never put them in a field or mountain scene or even in a living room! Well, I did use a park bench and a partial landscape in my son's family portrait, because I used a photo and that's what was in it. Also, because they're my family and I wanted them to have a nice keepsake. But, I'd never considered a landscape or still life as the subject of my paintings. I'm a realist, as you are, and I concentrated on getting a good likeness of my live subjects to the exclusion of anything else. A typical portrait would simply have a colored background, if you get what I'm saying. Watching your tutorials over the last several months has caused me to LOOK at things in a more artistic way. For instance, yesterday I was walking my dog through a field and we came across a bush with varying shades of green and gold leaves and I thought how interesting that would be to paint! The golden leaves of fall would make a nice colorful subject or a great highlight in the background for a portrait! It's a new way of thinking about the outdoors and things in general for me. And, I give credit where credit is due, Andrew. YOU have inspired me to - as you might say - take my art to a new level! That said, it's been so long since I painted my last portrait - 3 or 4 years, I believe - that I'm completely out of oil paints, mediums and my brushes have gotten hard from sitting too long and, I suppose, not cleaning them properly the last time they were used. Perhaps I could bring some of them back to life again using the dish detergent method I watched in one of your tutorials. But, mostly, I felt I needed a new start and bought a lot of new supplies. No, I didn't spend nearly $500! Lol, since I live on Social Security, I had to keep my art budget under $200, but it was barely under, like $180! And, I did need everything I got and then some, but I'm good at mixing my colors, so I purchased just the 3 primaries plus ivory black and lots of titanium white! I noticed you said you'd switched to a lead white, but I'm kind of afraid of lead-based paint and I HOPE titanium white doesn't contain lead, but I've never checked. I'm trying out some Liquin medium, recommended by you, which I'd never used before. I'd always used plain gum turpentine and linseed oil, creating my own mixes. I'm also guilty of mixing so-called "flesh tones" for my subjects, without adding the reds, blues, yellows and greens I've seen you put into a subject's face, so I've decided to try this and see if I can make it work for me, slowly at first. I'd hate to paint a pretty face and have her come out looking like a clown! So, I'm going to keep it subtle, subtle, subtle and re-watch your portrait tutorial of the model Stephanie, before adding any outrageous color combinations. I'm keeping my eyes on the shaded areas of skin to see if I can actually pick up some blues, yellows and greens in them. I should probably re-watch your quick tutorial on "How to Mix Skin Tones," before making a mess of things.I also may try the Photo Shop class at Skill Share, especially if they're still offering 2 months free. Well, I've taken up enough of your time, Andrew, so you can get back to your painting, but I do want to compliment you on your attention to detail, particularly in lighting. I need to set up some sort of lighting in the art-dedicated area of my bedroom, which is all I have for a studio at the moment, but there are a lot of windows in this room. Perhaps you could tell me how to use the natural outdoor lighting coming through these 6 large windows? First, of course, I'll need to remove or pull back the draperies. I have dark, light blocking drapes for those many nights I don't sleep and have to make it up during the day, but the windows are all around the room, so I should be able to light a subject well from any angle, with some recommendations from you! Thanks again for all the great tutorials! They've been an inspiring benefit for many, I'm sure, but they definitely have for me. Sincerely, Shushannah
Wow! The way those sparkles on the water bring that last piece to life was just magic. Loved that deep teal colour of the water shadows too. Mesmerising stuff.
You are fantastic! The effort you put in to make these videos is clearly visible. Your guidance is so helpful. The atmosphere you are able to create in your painting is same as the actual scene. This makes your work so special and inspiring.I had a few questions but they have already been answered by you ,,,,so thank you so much. Looking forward to your upcoming videos
Yes! I want as many DVD's that you make. I own 3 already. I love New Zealand and everyone I met there. I met some good friends from Christchurch and Wellington and they visited me in Colorado and I visited them in New Zealand. I fell in love with the country and the people. Keep up the beautiful paintings and especially the DVD's. Love your work!!!
You are bestst art teacher Sir ❤ Thank You so so much for all instructions, steps, and all & everything from painting process to brushes, mediums, canvas boards..!! 😇 thank You so much!!
I love that you explain your color mixes. I am a colorblind painter and it is extremely helpful to hear what is being used. Thanks! Keep them coming! You're fantastic
You make me love painting landscapes and painting with oils, you really are a master and a greaaaat teacher. Just watching your Yt video is so helpful. Thanks so much
In the first demo, its almost like you can see the clouds slowly moving, such a beautiful painting, not all cool paintings have to be large settings and that one is one of them:) Thanks for your guidance!
I have been painting for a very short 3 years or so. I watch many videos as how to paint. Each painting I get better. I think it will take ma many more years to get anywhere close to your level. I love Bob Ross painting and that is where I started. I love to paint but at my age, 65, I don't have much longer to learn. My biggest problem is not being able to draw. I am horrible at it. lol I won't stop though, I love the challenge. Thanks again for your lessons.
Man, between yourself and Michael James Smith, I think I am set! I would love to do what you do! Travelling to stunning parts of this gorgeous country and putting it onto canvas. Last week, I spent some time in Mt Aspiring National Park and walked the Young-Wilkin circuit. The scenery was just mind blowing, and I've spent a fair bit of time in our mountains and special places. Lake Cruicable, in particular, was awe inspiring. The kind of place that makes you feel tiny and insignificant. The sort of place that begs to be put on canvas. I've got plenty of photos from my wanderings of some truly beautiful landscapes, and I hope one day to be good enough at this to do them justice. Hakatere Conservation Area (as unlikely as it may seem) has yielded one of my favourites.Your paintings are just stunning. I'm so pleased to have found both yourself and Michael's tutorials, and I hope that one day, I might be a skerrick of as good as yourselves :)
Yes Andre, they are places of great inspiration. Greatly I appreciated his paintings and love to see him to paint in real time, thank you, you are a master. Hug from Porto-Portugal.
I learned a lot through this video as well as your others, thanks again for holding nothing back and clearly explaining as you go along. I look forward to watching this one many more times and hopefully giving oil painting a try
How lucky I feel to have come across your art work, Fabulous !! I enjoyed every moment , watching you paint , it has inspired me to pick up a paint brush once more and get back to doing the one thing I love more than anything ... To Paint.. Thank you so much for the video's ... Wonderful wonderful work. I am eager to watch more and will be following you as you go along .... I haven't felt this excited for such along time .......... Thank you again..... Loved Loved Loved it.. ! :)
Wow man...What a genius! What a pleasure to watch your videos. You really inspire me to paint even though I know it will take YEARS to get somewhere close to what you do....the colors and mood of the paintings are just perfect 👌 Congrats y Blessings!
Phenomenal. I learn SO much from just watching you apply the paint (and translating it into acrylic, for me). In just 30 minutes, you covered more than most of my art teachers during a semester years ago!
All i can say is, i wish i had run into your videos 25 years ago...LOL you are an amazing teacher, i have gained an entirely new perspective on landscape and floral painting. I love the orgaized pallet concept. But the blending of earth tone colors and high light colors has eluded me. Most of my paintings tend to be very bright. I fo understand atmospheric perspective and making changes to foreground shadows that push the distant subject back, but your teaching shows me ways to achieve that in a different way. I love it. Looking foward to painting something very different and very original.
I have also been to the Southern Island of New Zealand and I fell in love with the landscape. You are inspiring me to go through my photos. I did not have time to paint while I was in New Zealand and I hope I can go back again and spend time painting. Your paintings are beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
Your treatment for the sky and clouds, the mountains, the greens, the water , and the depth of the land is just marvelous. This would make a great first full DVD on landscape. And hopefully then you have more DVDs on landscape. Am I asking too much?
Your way of understanding exactly what sort of a tone is needed and where- is what really make these paintings stand out. Phenomenal work! Have you ever tried painting purely from imagination? Your technique is impeccable and it would be interesting to see what sort of imaginary and fantastic worlds and entities you could create with that technique.
Great video from a wonderful channel. Art books have provided me a much-needed escape from real life. I have my easy chair set up with a desk, a lamp, a blanket and a cup of coffee. I spent many hours with dragons, unicorns, space battles, pixies, knights, and now with my National Geographic books, the vast undersea world of the coral reefs. My art books are the best investments I ever made. My 3 favorite books are: - Works of Wonder by Michael Whelan - Infinite Worlds by Vincent DiFate - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson
OMG, every painting you do is just breathtaking. Makes me feel like giving up watercolour to paint in oils. Your detail, lights, darks, colour, everything is just so perfect. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful art.
Your pencil drafts remind me of some of Vincent VanGogh's over 1,100 academic pencil drawings; leading up to over 300 oils on canvas-many of which were painted several times. Thanks for your terrific video production values: These tutorials are as inspiring as they are educational. Please keep up the quality content generation.
Wow I am so glad I found this video! The explanation of your color usage across the canvas is incredibly helpful and I’ve not seen anyone so thorough in their demonstration on RUclips. Thank you for sharing your talent! I can’t wait to try what I’ve learned 😊
Your technique and explanations, all the details of paint mix and brushing onto the canvas is absoulutly wonderful. I am a nuby to your website and am looking forward to familiarizing myself to your selfless offerings of painting. I might even get over my disgust of my ignorance because of your expertise!
Excellent! Okay, I have had a few requests for this one. I may get to it, but I think it would be Kimberley inspired. Australian Tropics...Check. Clear waters.....check. Palms.....check. Crocodiles...check!
I love everything about your videos Andrew, ... you are brilliantly ingenious in your talent. I love listening to your eloquently narrated tutorials ... what a treat on so many levels. ... Brilliant artwork and eloquent English ... I am learning so much. Thanks for all you are doing with these videos ... I just love them. .... Cheers, Morgan
Hi Andrew ! I had the chance to visit Milford Sound, Glenorchy and all around New Zealand... Back there, my friends an I used to say that no camera picture in the world could give justice to the ridiculous beauty of those landscape and sceneries. But here... Even on a video footage, I can see that justice has been done with your paintings! ^^ Thank you for bringing those memories back... Congratulations on the amazing pieces of Art you create... And thank you once again for sharing these free painting lesson, it's invaluably benefic to the apprentice I am. :) Cheers !
If someone truly listened to what you are saying, and followed your process, they wouldn't need art school! You are condensing tons of information (years of knowledge) into a 30 minute clip. More like three 10 minute examples.. but hey, the beauty of oleo gel allows you to spend all that exrtra time you needed to produce and edit these awesome video productions! Thanks mate.
Your grasp on landscapes is ridiculously insane. They certainly look like photographs, but it is even better than that with the sharpness and colors. Loved all three paintings you did in this video, but I will definitely pick the last one as a favorite - blue mountains fading in the distance are so pretty, and the creek in front of it looks so alive. No wonder New Zealand is the the real world Middle Earth, it definitely looks like it holds some ancient, secret magic in its beauty. You would totally like the Brazilian landscapes too - Chapada Diamantina and the countryside blue hills/ smaller mountains of Minas Gerais kind of have the same magic to them =) Keep up woth the great vids!

One word: FANTASTIC!
I felt emotional at the end when you said they told you in art school landscaping was dead well you sir, have brought it back to life. I am inspired by you. I can feel a small fire in my belly. x
You by far are the best all round painter I've ever seen! I'm a 63 year old painter and never ha e I seen such talent.
Thank you Margo! Make sure you are subscribed and follow along with me! :)
I've come to the conclusion that this man is one of the Old Masters, who just happened to be born in the Twentieth Century.
Hahaha. Nope, way off. I have a time machine.
Thanks so much for the comment.

I'd like to make a request for a more in-depth look at painting clouds when you have the time. thanks again!
The sense of depth is amazing Andrew. And I'm no longer intimidated by the idea of painting a landscape. Thank you! ❤️
Sincerely,
Shushannah
Wow! The way those sparkles on the water bring that last piece to life was just magic.
Loved that deep teal colour of the water shadows too.
Mesmerising stuff.
As always, you leave us breathless with your ART.

No place like NZ. DVD's are on the way!
Awesome,beautiful scenery. Love it all.
The quality of your paintings and your instructional videos are outstanding. Thank you so much!
It was a real joy to watch! Excellent work!
You make me love painting landscapes and painting with oils, you really are a master and a greaaaat teacher. Just watching your Yt video is so helpful. Thanks so much
Stunning, stunning work.......
In the first demo, its almost like you can see the clouds slowly moving, such a beautiful painting, not all cool paintings have to be large settings and that one is one of them:) Thanks for your guidance!
thanks Andrew
for everything you've done for us !
Hey, you're welcome mate, it's my pleasure!
Spectacular!
It’s official, you are now a painting mentor to me. Great job Teacher.😄🙏🏼🙏🏼
You really did 3 masterpieces here, beautiful sense of space and light !
You are making landscape painting very alive Andrew, you are amazing!!
Yes Andre, they are places of great inspiration. Greatly I appreciated his paintings and love to see him to paint in real time, thank you, you are a master. Hug from Porto-Portugal.
As usual, you inspire me to paint. I am so thankful for your knowledge and inspiration..
Andrew< What a treat just reading the posts! You are indeed an artistic hero. Please carry on!
Great work Andrew you are a pro
Your teaching, exhortation and magnificent work and photography are so inspiring. Thank you for doing these videos.
welcome!
Phenomenal. I learn SO much from just watching you apply the paint (and translating it into acrylic, for me). In just 30 minutes, you covered more than most of my art teachers during a semester years ago!
All i can say is, i wish i had run into your videos 25 years ago...LOL
you are an amazing teacher, i have gained an entirely new perspective on landscape and floral painting.
As Kiwi who has traveled every inch of NZ these interest me more then any photo I have ever taken. bloody stunning.
I have also been to the Southern Island of New Zealand and I fell in love with the landscape. You are inspiring me to go through my photos. I did not have time to paint while I was in New Zealand and I hope I can go back again and spend time painting. Your paintings are beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks of the comment Diane!
Thank you so much! You are a REAL Artist/Scientist, Shishkin and Aivazovsky of New Zeeland. I wish you Inspiration.
SO much content!! You rock!!
Super, a real joy to watch
Your treatment for the sky and clouds, the mountains, the greens, the water , and the depth of the land is just marvelous. This would make a great first full DVD on landscape. And hopefully then you have more DVDs on landscape. Am I asking too much?
BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPE !!!
My 3 favorite books are:
- Works of Wonder by Michael Whelan
- Infinite Worlds by Vincent DiFate
- Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson
OMG, every painting you do is just breathtaking. Makes me feel like giving up watercolour to paint in oils. Your detail, lights, darks, colour, everything is just so perfect. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful art.
Thank you. You move me as an artist. The scenes are so beautiful. I wish I was as good as you! Your teaching is very enjoyable !
You are such a treasure to learn from. 😊 I cannot thank you enough!
Gracias, hermosos paisajes y exelente pintura.
bravo Andrew; thank you to be there for us ; beautiful work^merci beaucoup from Québec canada
PALM TREES ... can't get enough palm trees and tropical waters mmmmmmm...... coming from you it would be another masterpiece
Thank you for explaining the paint colors and brushes you are using. It is a tremendous help to this beginning painter!
Thank you Andrew! Very helpful information!!
So wonderful of you to help !
Thank you for bringing those memories back... Congratulations on the amazing pieces of Art you create... And thank you once again for sharing these free painting lesson, it's invaluably benefic to the apprentice I am. :)
Cheers !
Wow! Thank you so much Anthony!
Stunning paintings and a brilliant teacher!
A really wonderful piece of artwork.
your amazing! thanks a lot for creating all these stuff for us!
You deserve more. 🥺♥️ Thank you so much.
Stunning, beautiful
If someone truly listened to what you are saying, and followed your process, they wouldn't need art school! You are condensing tons of information (years of knowledge) into a 30 minute clip. More like three 10 minute examples.. but hey, the beauty of oleo gel allows you to spend all that exrtra time you needed to produce and edit these awesome video productions! Thanks mate.
Actually with all of the extra work the bloody painting is dry!!! Thanks so much for the comment Clark!
Just wonderful and inspiring👍😎🇺🇸
Absolutely beautiful
Fun! Really enjoy your edges, light and temperature effects.
Thats it .....? You are now my favourit living oil artist....! thank you sir.
Haha! Yeah...that's it :)
Extraordinary and inspiring. Thanks Andrew.
