  • Some information on what is needed to have your own glass studio. I know I probably forgot some things here (not to mention a Fire Extinguisher - - HIGHLY recommended!!), but hopefully I have covered some of the basics.

Thank you for making this video. I'm a glass fuser and still learned a lot here. You're an excellent teacher! I think I'll add a proper torch to my toybox :)

You explain it all so well. Thank you for the part in venting. Opening a window or something, it helped me with my oxygen machine also. You are the best.

Can you show how to work with the hot head torch please. I'm a beginner, also how yo set up and burn. I'm not very successful watching videos and none of them show with map gas. Also I'm going to do a microwave kiln. I'm small just want to create some new jewelry, this is a hobby I'm interested in. Beautiful art with glass

Hi Jeannie! I’m so glad you make these videos. I just found your channel and it’s really helpful. I just started flame working and I really want to set up a at home studio. Do you know of any secret online groups that sell glass working equipment? Or can you suggest a lower to mid range torch that can melt boro easily. Thank you.

Just found your page and love you!!!! I make glass beads in Newfoundland :) but lately they seem to be cracking in the kiln..would you be able to help with kiln settings ?! I make beads around 1 to 2 inchs and wanting to start making bigger ones. I also have a paragon kiln

Do you use 104 COE glass?

    • @veronicaball735

Yes I use Coe 104 Effetre

If your cracks are starting from the mandrel (center), most often from the bead ends, It could be that you allowed the glass to cool too much before putting it in the kiln. I always reheat my whole bead to a nice, orange glow before putting it in the kiln (I especially focus on the ends if they are long or huge beads because
that is where the metal mandrel is exposed to the outside air around it and (being metal) cools down your glass the fastest).

For my kiln, I set a "garage" temperature of around 920F (493C) for when I am working - - I run that temp for about 8-9 hours (the length of how long you will be torching). Then I ramp up to an annealing temperature of 950F (510C) for at least an hour (for 1", 25mm thick beads) or even longer for larger pieces (1.5 hours should be safe). Then I slowly have the kiln ramp down (around 200F per hour, 93C) until the temp gets down below 600F (325C) - - then it can shut off and cool down to room temperature. Hope this helps!!

Wow thank you so much I was setting my kiln on 950 while working and then dropping to 850 then letting it turn off I see I have been missing a few steps lol only been lamping working for two years so I still need to learn lots as I am self taught. And my beads do crack perfect in the middle so I have figuring thermal shock over stress shock. Also how long do you flame cool your bead before putting it in the kiln or do you put it in red hot?? Also are you running more propane then Oxy as your flame is a lot different then mine..I have a Bethlehem Alpha torch and I seem to have to work way father out because if I work as close as you do to the base my beads turn soupy so maybe my Oxy is set to high? Thanks for helping out I truly appreciate at it!

I have a Hot Head. but I go through the gas FAST. I also understand that it is now MAP gas not MAPP gas which MAP gas doesn't get as hot. A couple of questions. 1) can I get bigger canisters of MAP gas and a tube attachment or something? 2) is there a different gas I can use with the Hot Head?

    • @stufet8837

Joseph, MAP is hotter than propane, but not by much, I think 200 hotter. The difference is the Map will heat your glass faster, without details, with Map, will heat a piece of glass approximately 12-15 seconds faster. I’m just a backyard burner and I still haven’t made the step up to a professional torch due to the extreme Abundance of options pre-mix surface Mix snubnose for port to port are you going to get a foot pedal two stage Do you want compressed air are you going to go with a triple mix technology GTT? I don’t want to upgrade, It’s been a year of hell for this adhd mind. Anyways, Joseph, get a BBQ adapter that screws onto your BBQ tank, larger female hole to bbq tank, then buy the bernzomatic hose which screws into the smaller adapter hole. Your torch head screws into the end of the bernzomatic hose. Are used to burn through small map and small propane canisters like crazy. Paying approximately 60 bucks in total now [canadian] Will save you SOooomuch money in the long run. Good luck, Please take my advice, if you love it buy a professional torch. Buy a mega minor or alpha, don’t be a backyard burner propane only guy.

Where do you store your oxy/propane? Im trying to set up my own space and its in its own shed so i was thinking inside

    • @jeannie291
      @jeannie291  5 лет назад +1

Hi Steven. I have a home-fill unit with a K-tank for oxygen. I have the tank chained up to a wall stud inside my garage along with the pump/concentrator to fill it. The propane tank is run to the outside through a hole in the wall. It is safer to have the propane tanks outside in case of leaks.

Sorry but that isn't true about the hothead, you can get one hothead for 16.00 at Devardiglass.com, which you can get a starter kit for Less then 100.00 . I wish I would of had this info when I bought mine.
