Merry Christmas Mike, and a far happier New Year. Seeing the heads off the Evolution brought back memories. I used to machine the heads for Victory motorcycles. It was a interesting process. Heating the heads up in ovens while immersing the valve guides and seats in liquid nitrogen. Pressing the parts together, letting them cool then doing the final machining. Very tight tolerances. The valve guide bores total tolerance of 0.0003 As always keep the rubber side down.
Thanks, you too! That sounds like a great job. I really liked the Victory. I enjoyed the way they ran and stayed together. I was about to become a Victory Dealer, before the economy went upside down in 2010.
I hauled a Victory that had been in a little tumble. It had a breakage in a very different position than I've seen before. The shift lever had been in an impact and it broke the shifter shaft splined end off, leaving about ½" of shaft exposed. The guy rode it home in 3rd gear and it was in the garage. He had planned to sit on the bike and hold the clutch, but the cool down caused too much drag to just pull the clutch and roll it back. I put a pair of vise grips on the stub and worked the shifter while he rocked the bike. Once we found neutral, it was good to go. I imagine replacement of the shaft is a labor intensive operation.

Painting Semigloss black over all of it (except gasket surfaces) and baking it until it looks as sweet as the cookies I'm about to bake. It will be a spray can of whatever looks durable enough.
