I never read poetry, but Senlin Ascends sneaks in poetry to his books. He is the poetry equivalent of parents trying to sneak in vegetables into their food. He does it so well that I don't even mind the poetry being snuck in 😂

I finished my first read of The Lies of Locke Lamora a couple of days ago. The first 150 or so pages are like a punch in the face with the exposition, worldbuilding and big passages of description. But when it got going I was completely blown away. Loved Lynch's prose (even if sometimes the descriptions were a bit much), one of the funniest books I've read in a long time too!

The second book is my favourite of the trilogy. The ridiculousness of the situation they get into is a masterpiece. The banter and character development only gets better!

Hahaha, I was about to say how Senlin Ascends gives me Alice an Wonderland (+ Waiting for Godot) vibes which I *love* (I've just passed the 50% mark), but you beat me to it! 😉
This story seems to have so many of my favorite tropes: Utopia like society that actually a dystopia once you scratch the surface, cool/weird castle/tower, a lot of things that look completely random and weird but you have a feel that they'll actually have a purpose later on, a lot of mystery, adventure, scheming, a char that _isn't_ a chosen one, interesting side chars, etc 😁
And honestly, I haven't had any problems with Senlin as a protagonist yet 🤔 which is good, because chars make or brake the story for me 😊

I’m posting this recommendation in the hopes that it’ll plant the seed of interest for you and others- Empire of Silence by Christopher Ruocchio. This series is an incredible blend of sci-fi and fantasy. The characters are so well realized and personable, the universe is intriguing and full of political intrigue and the prose flows from direct to exquisite effortlessly. I’ve followed your channel for a long time and have a feel for your tastes in books. This is right up your alley. If you want a Sanderson fix, read this series. The first book is the weakest (but even at its worst it’s still a 9/10) and only goes up from there.

The Queens of Renthia series is on my TBR for next year! I liked Sarah Beth Dursts standalones quite a bit so I'm excited to start her trilogy! People living in the forest sound very cosy as well so I'm here for it.

If you want a fast paced story, like sanderson usually write i would suggest Worm by wildbow it's a superhero/villain story, with all my love for sanderson, steelheart is a joke compared to worm.

Absolutely spot on about the Witcher being very 'of its time' - it's enjoyable, but you can spot the old school tropes a mile away. It is effectively an archetypical hero power fantasy dressed in slightly edgier clothing. Triss' first chapter is basically just an excuse to go on a lengthy review of how many people she's slept with and how bland it all was, until suddenly Gerald of Ribena with his magic hands, arrives to shag her like no other has shagged her before, and now she can't get through the castle gates without dripping on the flagstones. It is truly cringey these days.

Hey Elliot, I wanted to bring the City of Stairs to your notice. It is part of the divine cities trilogy, and it was a very good read for me this year

The way Queen of Nothing is described sounds a lot of like the Kena: Bridge of Spirits game! Forest setting, spirits out of balance, conflict with nature? Check, check, check!

The Witcher is an amazing series. I'm glad I read it. That said, there isn't as much of a focus on the overarching world plot as I usually go for - the love of the characters kept me going.
Hot take: I'm looking forward to (hopefully) the tv series doing *better* on the overarching world plot.

One warning for the Witcher books: They get darker and darker after you hit Baptism of Fire. Just finished them, and the characters are awesome throughout, but some of the background themes were almost too much for me by the last book.

I was today years old when i realized that the "RECS" from these video titles come from "Recommendations", and not "recreational" aka short and fun stuff/ standalones hahaha
It took seeing Witcher on this list to question my preconceived notion lol silly me xd
PS: Did you read Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier? I'm almost halfway through it right now and I've never been so in-between if i like or hate a book. Couldn't find a review on your channel
