"If you crank it faster, does it play faster?" I honestly took a full second to realize how ridiculous that question is. I guess a lot of people associate the instrument to a music box.
I mean if you plug faster a guitar makes more notes... If you rapidly crank back and forth you basically crank faster AND play faster. Same iwht the bow of a violin. but you have to also do it fast backl and forth faster in one direction it only makes louder.
That's what happens if I run my violin bow backwards, so it makes sense c.c I like Patty's old Scottish lady. I can almost see the blue hair. I agree, the glasses suit her very well.
The “what is this??!!” almost killed me, followed by “where do you pump the air?” When people think they know something, then try to explain looking like an orchestra conductor on drugs, and generally just fail. Great video, and although it clearly makes for funny anecdotes, I’m sure it’s eye-rollingly tedious!
"A dog" would be a valid answer to the question whats inside the bag (chien/buzzing bridge) :3 Also, people assuming you're playing medieval music just because you play the Hurdy Gurdy is basically the "Gurdy-equivalent" to assuming all Bagpipe players play the scottish Great Highland Bagpipes. :)
It's such a great instrument! There's something about that first opening drone when a hurdy gurdy starts playing that I find really haunting/beautiful.
I laughed Patti. Yep those old street musicians often had a monkey on a chain that would collect your pennies, but I think more with a barrel organ. It would be interesting if you set up and played live in a busy place like a railway station to to see the reaction of passers-by on video. Love John xx
Very true! Until I show people the music videos most have no clue. Thanks for starting my day with a laugh! Keep cranking :> I can not wait for your album.
I think they are imagining a player piano, where the music is programmed to play the keys. Something about a turning wheel or spool in there somewhere 🤣
There's another type of 'Hurdy-gurdy" that was used on the railroads, long ago....it was a simple platform on wheels with a teeter-totter crank, a couple of workers would pump to make the cart go down the tracks to get to a work site. No music involved, though. I like your type of hurdy gurdy better. LOL
The question I get the most is “ is this a recently invented instrument” or “ did you invent this instrument” or “ is this a real instrument” something to these affect
I play the bagpipes and get the same comments! Except instead of the awkward crank motion, I get a weird trumpet motion and then they always try to "riverdance"
Its refreshing to see someone who actually has a great sense of humor and can poke fun at her own instrument and just have fun about it. Such an all around beautiful woman. Not just looks but personality wise.
Its a violin... With like 4 other instruments attached haha. I found you and storm-seeker last spring and thought about y'all again yesterday and started watching viseos. Awesome stuff
Just because the Hurdy Gurdy was a Medieval instrument, it doesn't mean it only plays Medieval music. Many instruments can find it's place in the modern music world, it just needs artists willing to make the shift.
your video made me laught alot.. but have to admit that hurdy gurdy sounds like those silly nicknames for boyfriends... messaging something like "how is my hurdy gurdy today? kiss hug kiss hug"
my favorite is when I tell my friends I want to get a hurdy gurdy and they don't believe that it's a real instrument or take it seriously because it really is kind of a horrible name for an instrument
I'm also a (heavy metal)hg player, and i totally agree...those questions are so true! Anyway Thank you for showing everyone how wonderful machine the hurdy gurdy is! I love your songs n videos. Keep it up ;) greetings from Japan
Just got myself a gurdy last week. Things are better in hungary since it's kind of a national instrument around here, but god damn there are some iteresting questions dropping the bomb on me too. -Thanks for the channel by the way, helps me a lot in taking my first steps :)
György Jánossy Hungary Got ALOT more Nationalist in the last 8 months. What is it called,.. the 8 northern lights, soon to be 12 in the Eastern European bloc defending our Christian Culture against the EU.God bless Hungary and all of the members of the Eastern European Bloc...! With much love and respect from America
I just realized why all the fans love your vids, you look into the camera like your coming on to it/them! Its the focal point you are looking at. you are looking at the CCD, which to the viewer looks like you really are looking deep into their eyes. On Broadcast TV the presenters are looking at a different focal point as they have an autocue in front of the camera. ok i admit it, you are very easy on the eye ;)
Some funny questions there but it's good that people are interested I guess and possibly sometimes a convenient excuse to talk to such a pretty girl! ;) Since finding your channel some time ago I've been trying to remember where I had heard hurdygurdy music before and it finally clicked that it was in the theme tune to the tv series, Black Sails.
I have some questions. 1-The Hurdy Grudy is an instument made by you? 2-You say it's a mix of the violin, but it sounds like a twine (I love it) that's not a question ups, sorry 3- This is not the Hurdy Grudy but I love the duo of voices that you did in The Longing with Storm Seeker, are you still in the group? and you have songs in which the two sing?
awesome :) As a musician, the number one question I get, by far, is the general concern about the well-being of ... my neighbours. Sometimes I laugh about it, sometimes I give them full explanations and sometimes... just can't be arsed to comment :)
I just saw 1 of music videos yesterday...never heard of this instrument but it's awesome.Your awesome,Love Medieval music (especially Viking music) so please don't stop making medieval music.♥️♣️♥️♣️♥️♣️♥️♣️
I'm an old Guitarist who loves the Hurty Gurty. I am going to get one and learn to play it. But there will always be a better 'gurtist' than me so I will still get one and learn to play it... I will also just play my guitar even more.
Patty, I didn't know you also did stand up comedy. I just watched 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' by a Swedish folk-metal band called Apocalypse Orchestra - they have a hurdy gurdyist too. I love what you do. Cheers.
I did have one young woman come up to me and tell me, in no uncertain terms, that she knew what it was and that it was a dulcimer. I said, uh, no, it's a hurdy gurdy. She replied, I KNOW what that is and it's a DULCIMER. She went flouncing off while her friend just looked at me in apology and then hurried after her.
I always carry spare dogs and babies in a bag just in case I ever need one
exactly! :D
Well... if you're playing hurdy gurdy... you might actually carry some spare dogs around... ;) (talking about the chien of course)
Fresh, smoked or freeze-dried?
Isnt that whats inside the bagpipes?
@@PattyGurdy I guess the response to that is "oh, well my last baby broke when I dropped it so now I always carry an emergency backup" ;-).
"If you crank it faster, does it play faster?"

As someone who knows nothing about instruments, I totally thought that's how it worked...
What happens if the crank turns wrong, plays the song backwards?
lol
Die Brille steht dir!
That's what happens if I run my violin bow backwards, so it makes sense c.c
I like Patty's old Scottish lady. I can almost see the blue hair.
I agree, the glasses suit her very well.
I’ve gotten a similar question before at school
The “what is this??!!” almost killed me, followed by “where do you pump the air?” When people think they know something, then try to explain looking like an orchestra conductor on drugs, and generally just fail. Great video, and although it clearly makes for funny anecdotes, I’m sure it’s eye-rollingly tedious!

Also, people assuming you're playing medieval music just because you play the Hurdy Gurdy is basically the "Gurdy-equivalent" to assuming all Bagpipe players play the scottish Great Highland Bagpipes. :)
Or if you play accordion, and everyone assumes you only play polkas.☺
So true, I hear Bagpipe players 'play' Gino Vanelli's 'Black Cars" all the damn time!
The funniest lady on the internet by far. The scottish accent and baby in bag genuinely had me laughing out loud 😂
You're have another talent! love your facial expressions as much as watching you play the gurdy.
"wait, hurdy gurdy people can crack jokes too and not be always ol' medieval moody?"
Yea, I learnt that from you Patty! Love from a guitarist :)
It's such a great instrument! There's something about that first opening drone when a hurdy gurdy starts playing that I find really haunting/beautiful.
Totally adorable!
I laughed Patti. Yep those old street musicians often had a monkey on a chain that would collect your pennies, but I think more with a barrel organ. It would be interesting if you set up and played live in a busy place like a railway station to to see the reaction of passers-by on video. Love John xx
Hahah. You should try unicycling. "Where's your other wheel". "You lost a wheel", "*sings circus music*".
This is a hoot! I can't believe I didn't see it until today. Subscribed.
if I wasn't already laying down I would have fallen over laughing but I did drop my phone on my face of that counts
Watching you talk is just enchanting.
This is awesome, keep them coming!
Laughing soo much. your sense of humor is amazing. and so is your accent.
Very true! Until I show people the music videos most have no clue. Thanks for starting my day with a laugh! Keep cranking :> I can not wait for your album.
the Scottish impersonation was hysterical! couldn't stop laughing!
I even had someone not believing I was actually playing.. That the crank was like .. a system to play the tune and I was faking it. REALLY!? ...
I think they are imagining a player piano, where the music is programmed to play the keys. Something about a turning wheel or spool in there somewhere 🤣

You could play the kazoo and I'd still watch. FAF.
I loved Patty’s terrible Scottish / German accent lmao x
You are so awesome lol i love your channel!
I play the bagpipes and get the same comments! Except instead of the awkward crank motion, I get a weird trumpet motion and then they always try to "riverdance"
This girl opened my mind beyond my normal metal music universe! Thanks, Patty!
love your channel can't get enough keep it up ..cheers.😉
Adorable! Love your music btw!
this is phenomenal. thank you for this.
"Where is your monkey?", Answer: "My boyfriend is at home, thanks for asking."
really enjoyed watching the new video it was cool had fun watching it
Its refreshing to see someone who actually has a great sense of humor and can poke fun at her own instrument and just have fun about it. Such an all around beautiful woman. Not just looks but personality wise.
Enjoyed the video, keep up the good work

You have a 'purdy' mowf! Patty Gurdy.
your video made me laught alot.. but have to admit that hurdy gurdy sounds like those silly nicknames for boyfriends... messaging something like "how is my hurdy gurdy today? kiss hug kiss hug"
Lol. Great video Patty.
You acting well behind the camera. It's entertaining to watch you. Great humor and ideas. Keep doin' it ;)
Patty, you crack me up; you have a great sense of humor.
So, how do you make music come out of your hand forge?
Your a gem. Thanks for the smile.
Story of my life 😂😂😂😂
my favorite is when I tell my friends I want to get a hurdy gurdy and they don't believe that it's a real instrument or take it seriously because it really is kind of a horrible name for an instrument

Michael Abbott Oh, thanks!!!
Same here about sub to your channel, good job, Yoko!
Well Patty, You sure are Hurdy Gurdy Purty!
That weird gesture looks like they think you play a Drehorgel.
I love how genuine you are and telling about the hurdy gurdy. When will you be doing another live chat.
A dog AND a baby! Whats wrong with you? I can't pull only one inside, so there is no one to play with!
Just got myself a gurdy last week. Things are better in hungary since it's kind of a national instrument around here, but god damn there are some iteresting questions dropping the bomb on me too. -Thanks for the channel by the way, helps me a lot in taking my first steps :)

Well, I mean technically there is a dog in the bag....on the trompette(s)! :D :D
You are fun a skilled musician and pretty Bless you Patty!!
you are goofy and i loves it!
That's why inPoland it's called a crank lyre instead of the cartoon name :D
i love your video and your humor, hope you make video more often, and maybe do some covers.
When did you become a great comedian as well as a great musician?
I just realized why all the fans love your vids, you look into the camera like your coming on to it/them!

ok i admit it, you are very easy on the eye ;)
This intro tune is nice. Do you have a full music of it?
Sounds good Patty... I hope you make more videos
Someone once asked me what I had in my gurdy case. I replied that it was a dead ostrich which I was hoping to smuggle through customs.
Your awesome I laughed my ass off and I love your music keep it going
What's the song that plays at the beginning and the end??
shes just beautiful too

I don t understand nothing, but i love u hahaha
I have some questions.
1-The Hurdy Grudy is an instument made by you?

I just saw 1 of music videos yesterday...never heard of this instrument but it's awesome.Your awesome,Love Medieval music (especially Viking music) so please don't stop making medieval music.♥️♣️♥️♣️♥️♣️♥️♣️
Hahaha the old granny xD
The part of the baby killed me x'D
Du bist echt die coolste. Thx😁
Hey Patty what is the song in your intro/outro?
I'm an old Guitarist who loves the Hurty Gurty. I am going to get one and learn to play it. But there will always be a better 'gurtist' than me so I will still get one and learn to play it... I will also just play my guitar even more.
Amazing personality :)
There was some people who have asked me if I was grinding coffee inside "that thing" (my hurdy gurdy xD)
What music is that in the intro?
Patty, I didn't know you also did stand up comedy. I just watched 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' by a Swedish folk-metal band called Apocalypse Orchestra - they have a hurdy gurdyist too. I love what you do. Cheers.
Too much fun! Yep- gotten most of those questions and comments though never been asked if there was a baby or a dog in the case. That's just weird.
Take it easy pretty lady... don't break your crank. (you're pretty fuckin' hilarious)
What is the opening song here?
I had never heard something about this instrument before "The Longing" : now i think that it's my favourite instrument xD
I was unaware that there were any stereotypes RE. Hurdy Gurdy players
I never knew!
:-) very funny
I've listened to your music, I like it very much and I like your approach to your instrument
My compliments
What a beautiful smile 😍
What is name of your intro song?
XD bahahaha XD this video is freaking great! XD! when i show people what the instrument looks like, i get a lot of this: O_o???? LMFAO! SPOT. ON.
I need a Gurdy.
I like the way you talk.
اhi quel est l'origine de cette instrument thnx
So, it's like the autoharp version of a violin...
That scottish accent, so cute
The last scene also works for Irish bouzouki xD
You are very funny, as well as making great music. Don't lose the accent!
