    The LEGO Batman Movie might simply look like a kid's movie on the surface, but the film shares many of the same qualities as the 1966 Adam West Batman TV series. Today, we're taking you through the origin and history of how the 1960s Batman show got made, how it impacted the way audiences saw the Dark Knight, and how The LEGO Batman Movie is simply a modern version of the campy series. Plus, we explain my theory on how LEGO Batman might unintentionally help out the DCEU. Holy here we go again, Batman!

    I'm surprised that you didn't bring up "Batman: Brave And The Bold". A lighter Batman series that displayed a perfect blend of adventure, nostalgia, comedy, and satire. This series was definitely a love letter to the silver age Batman which should have lasted longer than it did.

      LATVERIAN1 To be fair, the show staff made the decision to end it because they felt they had peaked. Any more would have just been stale. That’s an admirable decision in my opinion.

      NerdSync I've got a question/bone to pick/ historical inaccuracy. Why is it that Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns always get the credit of reimagining Batman when The Neil Adams/Denny O'Neil run seemed to this years before with a deadly Joker, and new characters like Ras Al Ghul and Man-Bat?

    • @ardon68
      @ardon68 7 лет назад +1

      as a about 8 years of collecting dc comics fans and reader from 1986 till1992 and collected back issues of batman and detcetive comics at the time of the late 80's even mid 80's before the frank miller dark knight returns book came out the batman comics where getting darker in the 70's and even darker in the early 80's. and sales where up in the 80's for dc comics not all but most.

    • @nerd_scum
      @nerd_scum 7 лет назад +2

      Ryan McCurdy through a lot of fantastic Batman comics in the five or six years before Miller did The Dark Knight Returns. However I feel he gets as much credit as he does is because as good as all those stories are they focus heavily on the swashbuckle a crime-solving Batman from the Golden Age trying to take him back to his roots. Which is fantastic however Miller in The Dark Knight Returns redefined the character for the modern era with a modern Sensibility and an edge that totally coincided with all the other changes happening in comics at that time and out of that crowd initiating the change his voice along with Alan Moore seem to be the loudest and the sharpest

    I always felt that Batman the brave and the Bold was the first spiritual successor of the Adam West show. That is the great thing, both versions of Batman can peacefully co-exist beside each other. The animated shows have already shown that.

    Lego Batman is a fun movie for parents to take their kids to, but I don't think silly campy Batman would work in a live action film targeted for the whole family. Lest we learn nothing from the disaster that was the Batman and Robin film?

    • @gls6388
      @gls6388 7 лет назад +5

      The main issue with the campyness in Batman and Robin is that it's a sequel to the darker and more serious films of Batman, and Batman Returns. The mood swing is just so jarring that it nearly gave me whiplash thinking about it. Since Lego Batman took place in its own universe where this sense of humor is expected, it makes sense.
      Also, there were somewhat fun animated Batman shows which works since Batman was still the straight man in a world full of talking gorillas and shapeshifting former criminals.

      In logic though that's the reason why Lego Batman works so well also is because it's not really a Batman movie, more like a parody like Robot Chicken or Mad Magazine (is Mad Magazine still a thing?)

    I think what makes the 60's batman and the Lego batman work so well is that they still stay true to the character. In both versions batman doesn't kill, he doesn't use guns, he has lots of cool gadgets and fights colourful villains. And these things are what make the darker versions of the character like the dark knight returns or the nolan films work too, they're true to the character from the original comics that we all love.

    I'm very particular about my Batman. I don't like most iterations of the character. I don't like the dark, sad, never smiling Batman. This is why I love the Flash. He's like Batman except he smiles, makes jokes, interacts with his citizens, has fun, and has emotions other than sadness and anger. Which is why I love The Lego Batman Movie. He's what I want from my Batman.

      What about a Batman who never smiles as Batman, but often smiles as Bruce Wayne? Like Nolan's Batman.
      Of course once you have a Robin, who should act as comic relief, Batman should smile as Batman once in a while, because Robin is so funny.

    • @seunglee6990
      @seunglee6990 5 лет назад

      Fif0l it’s fine that Batman is smiling and stuff but it doesn’t mean he’s always making jokes I mean look at the justice league show from like 2004 he’s smiling and stuff but not every ten seconds

    • @Fif0l
      @Fif0l 5 лет назад

      @@seunglee6990 TBH Justice League animated show is my favorite iteration of all the superheroes. Still, my interpretation of Batman is somebody who always wears a facade, unlike Superman or GL who always wear their heart on their sleeve. The moments when Batman smiles in the show are either still within the facade(during some power plays against the villains for instance, like laughing at Harley Quinn for thinking Joker actually respects her), or during rare heartfelt moments where the facade breaks for a moment, like the moment when WW starts humming the song he sang.
      My point was asking the OP: how about Bruce Wayne who isn't always depressed, but maintains a special persona whenever he wears a mask.

    It's definitely the modern 1966 Batman, as the influence of the Adam West show and the Silver Age of comics are all over it. That's most likely why the humour and the charm of it seems to work as well as it does, while also incorporating more modern aspects from the comics, like the emphasis on the importance of the Bat-family and the intertwined dynamic of Batman and the Joker.

    What i like about the D.C. Animated films and marvel movies is that it shows some form of character development. In civil war Tony learns more about consequences causing the whole fight( even though most were just collateral damage) . In JL vs Teen Titans we get to see Damian develop along with establishing new characters like Raven. Some things can't always be gritty , you need a comedic break from time to time. It doesn't even have to be comedic it can be cute like a puppy or romantic like finally being notice by senpai Scott

    Even in darker interpretations, there tends to be something to help with the whole "pallets cleansing" thing. That is, if the writers are smart. Carrie Kelley's role in The Dark Knight Returns comes to mind. it's THE gritty Batman, yet there's a brightly colored Robin hanging around, reminding everyone not to take anything to seriously.

    Have not seen it either but the big difference is that the Adam West batman was the only, or at least the most prominent, Batman to a lot of people in it's time. With the Lego Version the darker batman is well known to the public at large. Lego seems to be doing what it has been doing since the first Lego Star Wars game; creating a lighter funnier version that exists along side the more serious version. By being markedly different (being a toy with unrealistic features) people don't tend to accept it as what Batman is but as an obvious spoof.

  • @BaeBunni
    @BaeBunni 7 лет назад +1

    I do think it is kinda fun to think about Lego Batman being a new version of the Adam West's batman. I know from personal experience I watched the Batman Serial about a year a two ago in it's entirety with the extended family, parents, siblings and kids and to an extent we all enjoyed it mostly because it's funny now. While the adults laughed at the costumes and the actors, the kids enjoyed the easy paced action and story, and I hope lego batman does the same.

  • @SaintArsenal
    @SaintArsenal 7 лет назад +1

    Great movie. It really balanced being ridiculous and being very accurate depiction of the Batman comics, even if both of those got a bit extreme. The Lego Batman videogames have given them practice with that by having references that you would probably only get by reading the comics. Would be neat to see this balance in a live film just to find out if it only works with non-live action like Legos or animation.

    The 66 Batman was also a pretty good adaptation of the character .... it had episodes where batman did more detective work than most movies.I have huge hopes for the LEGO Batman in this territory, not so much on the DCCU

  • @ShadyDoorags
    @ShadyDoorags 7 лет назад

    This makes me see the Adam West Batman in a whole new light. I always saw that version as an insult to the Batman series, a way for Batman to stay relevant with the times while losing what the stories were supposed to be, and... yeah, you could argue they still are, but Lego Batman looks exactly like my cup of tea despite how over the top it obviously is and I can't say it's any less canon breaking than the Adam West Batman.

  • @JCrownMusic
    @JCrownMusic 7 лет назад

    I definitely agree with you, Scott. The Lego Movie is definitely similar to Adam West Batman in the sense you were speaking to. I also think with so many people hating on recent batmans, this movie shows them that some people agree with them and that DC (or whoever is in charge of the movie) understands their flaws.

    I think people are just burned out on "dark and gritty" across the board, so a light hearted goofy take on Batman is a nice breath of fresh air.

    When you think about it, Batman The Brave and the Bold was a combination of both the dark and brooding Batman, and the colorful flashy Batman, which is why people think so highly of it. I think that what people really want is a serious Batman put in comedic or light hearted situations. If you have dark and brooding in a glum setting then it kinda diminishes any sense of creativity, so you gotta add some color and some comedy.

    i love campy batman just as much as i love the serious brooding batman ive grown up with, and i gotta say it is great seeing a campy batman every now and then, i mean thats what made old school comics so good was that they didnt take each other seriously, plus condiment man has really needed a time to shine for the villain he is, plus its always good to see a batman that acts like a kid in a candy store, he has wealth intelligence and fighting prowess, seeing him with an inflated humuorous ego that takes himself too seriously is a valid option and good to, like you said, cleanse the palate every now and then.

    The issue with a serious Batman film is that people take it seriously. Fans are invested and want to see a live action version of the Batman they love to read about. Every live action DC film has fallen short in one way or another (poor casting, poor plot, not staying true to the characters etc). With Lego Batman, nobody can think like that as it is an intentional parody of the character. There is no expectation for what it should be and, therefore, can be enjoyed simply for what it is.

    and FYI for those who don't know, a "movie serial" is an theatrical episodic series of films with an overlaying ark that were typically between 15-30 min an episode. so in one sense they were a movie cut into several sections and in another sense they were tv shows but since tv wasn't invented yet they had theatrical releases. I figured I'd explain so people don't have the same misunderstanding as in the batcave t-rex and giant penny video.

    I believe this movie to be exactly that my little brother wants the watch Lego Batman because it looks funny as do I but also all the references it makes. I love it when something is able to make fun of itself and Lego Batman seems to have done it pretty well along with the original TV show.

    I'm old, old enough that when the Batman was a tv series, I was a kid. In the area that I lived at, ABC, the channel that had the Batman series, I couldn't pick that channel up without cable. My best friend, at the time, who did have cable, just loved this series, and I really wanted to see it. Finally, when summer came, I went to see my grandmother and she had ABC, in her area you didn't have to have cable to get all channels. FINALLY, I got to see Batman. I remember it was really disappointing for me, with the POW!! and the Bam!!! I really thought it was more going to be serious.
    I always wanted that inbetween, the color and dark. I think the best interpretation of Batman on film is Batman The Animated Series. Now if they could do a live version of that series, that would be the coolest.

    I loved The LEGO Batman Movie! It had so many references to previous Batman stories like:
    (Spoilers)
    .
    .
    .
    "What about the time with the parade and the Prince music?"
    "Let's get nuts."
    All the previous Batmobiles being in the Batcave
    A bunch of old suits being in the Batcave
    And all the less obscure or easier to see ones that I didn't feel like writing down

    I think that a lot of what makes the best versions of batman work is stylisation, look at BTAS and the Tim Burton movies, they are dark, but not gritty and realistic, the heavy stylisation is what makes them work, like the Adam West Batman.
    Batman needs to be larger than life, weather dark and serious or bright and flashy, he works best built primarily on style rather than verisimilitude.

    I never thought of Lego Batman that way... to me it looks like a breath of fresh air from the darker Batman today, but I never connected it to the 60s TV show. I think I'll like the movie for the same reasons I like the Batman 66' comic series, it's different and colorful, I think Batman needs that right now. Maybe superman will get a Lego movie too, to make up for the edgier one in the DC Cinematic Universe.

    *LEGO Batman movie* felt like a beautiful and hilarious *love letter to DC fans in general*, both young and old... ^^
    And I think *the right way for the DCEU* to be back on track is just to *do character's justice* (no pun intended) : let the Flash, Superman, Hal Jordan... *"be funny and bright"* , and let Batman, the Suicide Squad and the other *"heroes" who need it* (maybe this new take on Aquaman) to be *"dark"* (with a little of sarcasm)...

    Plus they're both about something. Batman '66 had a lot of subtext and clever satire, and most of the messages where actually pretty progressive. And lego Batman has a really nice message about family and camaraderie, that's also a giant metatextual middle finger to the "gritty" and "mature" psycho-thug Batman.

  • @scifislack

    I think Batman needs many different alterations to survive, I personally love my campy content (I'm even reading "Batman: The War Years" at the minute, and it's a fantasic collection of Golden age Batman stories). It gives us a breather, to look at The Batman's lore and laugh with them. I love my dark detective but I also need the Campy Champion, you just need a balance even if they are in separate universes or whatnot.
