Great shots, Matt. I’m continually impressed by your street shots. Bravo 👏
Thanks! Nothing special. As with street you are limited by the location/ time of day/ weather etc to add interest... but I tried!
I owned a v4 35mm ‘Cron for awhile pre-digital. I liked it optically but mechanically it felt wobbly compared to my other M lenses. A CLA tightened it up for awhile but then the wobbliness returned. So I sold it.
Years later I found a v3 (which I think Peter’s also is, yes?) and have been using it ever since. It’s glow-y wide open compared to the v4 but stop it down even a little and it competes just fine. More solid build too.
Thanks David, yes look out for the full video soon and you might be able to relate to my findings.
Which 35 summicron is this?
And how does it compare to say.. the APO summicron-M?
Full video and all the info to follow.. Completely different to an APO!
Great video - thank you :) really cool that you walk on streets like a local one
Thanks, yes I'm nothing special, just an average guy!
Love seeing my city through your lens but I hope you'll show some pictures of the more beautiful parts of it in your next video ;-)
Ha thank you! Sorry I always seem to find the most old areas of a city. Watch my 21mm Leica video for the usual tourist photos if you missed it.
It's true that the 35mm is a remarkable tool and can remain permanently screwed onto the camera because it allows both close-ups without distortion and landscape photography, it's a good compromise. Personally I love the little Elmarit 28mm, very discreet and easy to use once positioned on the hyperfocal. Great video Matt as usual (be careful with the abbreviations I had to look up the meaning of EDC on the internet).
Thanks Hector, sorry I had to look up EDC too the first time!
I owned this lens for a year or so, and currently own the 35mm Summilux f/1.4 ASPH (the model made just prior to the current 2022 version). As a number of your very first shots in this video illustrate, the lens flare from the f/2 is so extreme and unpredictable, I found it ruined far more photos for me than when it made photos in which I would want those extreme effects, while the f/1.4 exhibits very little lens flare even without using the lens hood at all. (I carry f/1.4 with just the protective ring on it almost all the time). Shooting at f/5.6 was for me a sweet spot for street photography with both lenses, however the f/1.4 gave more of a natural perception of depth to my eye in photos with subjects of interest all the way from close up to far away in the frame. The Summilux really has that Leica "magic" that few other lenses offer, so is my choice today for everyday carry and really "the only lens you need" for the M-System. That said, the 35mm f/2 made plenty of beautiful images as long as the light is coming from behind the camera.
Thanks Bob! Yes the Summilux lenses have more pop from the DOF vs the Crons but for 5.6 I tend to carry non-Lux lenses. I'm a fan of the 8-E Light Lens Lab copy. See the 35mm Cron vs LLL in the full Cron video out next.
I shoot a similar setup, got my 240/35cron back in april. Out of curiosity, how long have you had the 240 and has it ever broke down? Its quickly become my main camera, and I cant seem to find real world data on them breaking down. I understand they are still serviceable by leica. Debating selling off the rest of my gear, just not sure how long these older digital Ms may survive.
Hi Brian, great. I've had the M240 since before the M10 was even a thing. No issues, only RF calibration as needed but that's the same with all RF. People use the M8 and the M9 is still very popular too so the M240 is modern compared!!
Had my M240 sent in this year for repair. The rangefinder mechanic broke somehow and had to be replaced. But all still possible at Leica.
what an interesting location - YAWN!
Ha thanks. Yes I’d never been to Krakow before but this was the area where we stayed. For the traditional tourist photos see the Leica 21mm video where I’m in the city centre.
Cinephile note: loved the reaching-into-the-bag opening shot! Very apropos for a gear profile; made me wonder ‘What's he going to pull out?” I'm usually less interested in “famous” Leica lenses as they tend to be extra-expensive because of their reputation, and generally I can't see what all the hype is about… These photos are very nice but I suspect that's mostly down to the talented bloke behind the camera!
Future thought: Lately on Instagram I've been seeing a lot of marketing for a new Chinese M-mount brand called Thypoc (???)… the advertising is bizarrely pretentious, but the lenses (a 28/1.4 and a 35/1.4) look interesting, with ambitious tech including aspherics and floating elements. Would love to see what you make of them if you can find a distributor to lend you a set…
Hi James thank you! I'm glad you liked the bag shot! (A moment of creativity as I was walking around). The lens is more painterly (aka, not perfect), see the full video to come. I've not heard of Thypoc but I will keep a look out, thanks for mentioning!
I like my V5 35mm Summicron, it’s my EDC on an M10 Monochrom.
Nice, yes I see why these are so popular!
Well-done! “Like” button smashed, for the algorithm. My Walter Mandler-era Summicrons are 50mm, but it is good to see your 35mm Summicron images, shot in what appears to be a most interesting city. My 35mm lenses for the Leica M system have either faster or slower max apertures; no 35mm ‘Crons, yet.
Thanks Rex, yes a nice little lens. Full video to come!
i've owned the APO 50 and 90 crons but not the 35... loved the 90... and you're right... that 35 takes better than real shots
Thanks, I'll share all the lens info (and quirks) in the next video!
Nice photo walk. While you speak of film all I hear is an M240. ;o) I like the 35 you are using as it has nice color and sharpness without being clinical. How does it compare to the Zeiss 35mm f/2 Biogon ZM? Tell me, how do you find the M240 color compared to the M-9? You may have prodded me back to the M240. And, yes, the way to get better at photos is totake alot of them. Thanks for another great video.
Yes no film camera on this day, I was trying to be 'good' and travel light! Biogon will be totally different, like Lux vs Distagon. Different styles. M9 colours are nicer but a few people that own the M240, M10, M11 say they like the M240 best (most Leica like).
Looks like it renders rather close to my 35 Summicron v3..
You've be able to see better in the full video to follow!
Great shots, Mat. I specially the monochrome shots. A great focal length.
You must have felt safe leaving your camera unattended for your video shots of yourself.
Thanks! Yes it was quiet so I felt save putting the camera down (it was only a small GoPro*)
From the pictures I take it that it's the six-lens incarnation, version III, prior to the king-of-bokeh (which I had a few years). Before the hype started it didn't have a reputation to be anything special. I wouldn't expect to much in comparison to other versions and also not in comparison to the 2.0 Ultron. I'm curious of your verdict in the next video.
Thanks! Yes the next video will be the Summicron. I posted the model video last night to mix it up a little.
I paid a kidney for this lens so I'm pleased to see it passed the audition!
Haha, wait for the next video and then thank me if you agree! :)
Nice city for photos , not sure if lens camera or presets but they look cool 👍 btw not sure if it's on another tab in my browser or if I heard something weird in this video, sounds like some background lo fi music? 🥰
Haha thanks Thomas, I hoped you'd spot that! My first video with music after 375+? videos..!
I was rather surprised when I saw all the flare and occasional lack of contrast in the Summicron. Too bad.
It's a common trait with Cron lenses (well the 35mm and 50mm for sure). I'll post the full 35 Cron video next and I re-bought the 50 v5 Cron so i'll do a video for that too at some point.
Are you a 35 mm guy, thought you we more of a 28 mm like myself.
Crons are always great though.
Although people praise your street-photography shots I hope you are not offended when I don't share their opinion hehehe
Anyways, always good to see your videos and to hear from you.
Thanks Rob, yes I'm a portrait guy, this was just me going for a walk to try the lens. Yes I think Ii'm more a 28mm guy too for walkabout.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom And a very good portrait guy we may add
Your portrait photography is elite but your street photography is terrible 😂
Yep 🙄
Ha thanks. With both you are limited by the model or location. I rather not shoot at all than photo a model I can't see in my portfolio but for testing lenses I have to use whatever location I have. I prefer "stuff" photos to street photos with people so I tend to look for light and yes stuff than photographing the random homeless guy. Not my thing.
Yes sorry i'm a model photographer. This was just walking around to test the lens.
