Indian social media platforms have become home to staged videos that spread hatred and disinformation about the Muslim community. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014, there has been a rise in Hindu nationalism and social media experts say platform loopholes are fuelling negative sentiments towards the over 200 million Muslims living in India.

Most countries have laws to deal with hate speech and spreading rumours. Section 153A of the Indian penal code prohibits citizens from creating disharmony or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different groups of people.[2]. That such laws are not used is not surprising considering that politicians, including Modi himself will not speak out, much less take action. It is all about not angering supporters and losing votes. If I am not mistaken, the police will only act when orders come from the very top but nobody has the political will to do what is right.
I can hate, and talk about hating anyone I want. I hate people like you for instance. There are laws even in America about lying. The freedom to speak the truth shall not be infringed.

When laws are not used and enforced, it makes a mockery of the whole system. Add to this is the total disregard for due process of the law.
Just look at the recent incident in Bhopal where 3 men were arrested for beating up a youth. Most rational people see it as just that. But because the victim is a Hindu and the rowdies were Muslim, it has now become a religious conflict. Then there was the rumour that the three goons were trying to covert the victim. It may be a rumour but the majority of the commentators readily accepted it as fact.
We expect the culprits to be first charged in a court of law. Then they are given the chance to defend themselves and be represented by a lawyer. But even before that, the authorities moved in to tear down the homes of where the culprits lived as punishment. It didn’t matter that the houses were built by the parents who now do not have a roof over their heads. The justification was that the houses were built on government land. But the two cases are not related at all. So why only take action now and not when the houses were built a few years ago?
Why punish the whole family when a son committed a crime? I am afraid law and order have given way to mob rule and street justice.
