So if I wanted to achieve this (a tank that doesn't need water changes) for myself at home, what substrate and plants and equipment would I need? Sorry Cory I couldn't quite make out the name of that one kind of mossy plant that seemed to be being used as a filter in a lot of places.
Hey Cory!! I watch this video once every few months... Ive replicated alot of their nature tank styles!!! My 75 and 55gal basically just get maybe 5gal of poop vacced out a month. Then just top ups 👌🏻 On about 12mths now.
Those perfectly aquascaped tanks we see on aquascaping contests are indeed beautiful. But this natural, uncontroled chaos of plants is so much more hypnotising. I agree with you, Cory. I could get lost for hours looking at these wild tanks. They are like little pieces of a real river.
This store is amazing! Their fish can be pricy but it's all worth it considering the health and quality of the fish. All plants and fish can be purchased straight from their tanks. The owners are very knowledgeable and have a deep passion for what they do. They won't sell fish to someone who they know isn't ready (such as not having a cycled or large enough tank for a certain species) yet they are willing to help and teach you to be apart of the aquarium hobby.
I'm just getting into the planted aquarium hobby and these tanks are an inspiration. I have a 5 gal with a deep substrate, heavily planted with starogyne, amazon sword, duckweed, horn wort, dwarf grass, 1 female koi betta, 1 amano, 4 neocardinia, 1 mystery snail, and a whole bunch of other hitch hikers. Honestly every time I try to do anything other than a small water change, I ruin everything and the tank has to completely reset... I feel like the secret is deep substrate, give the plants what they need, semi frequent small water changes, and a hands-off approach.
So I just went there today and had a wonderful experience The owner is from Burma and told me that his father had a huge goldfish pond with 8" of gravel. From what I understood, that water was very expensive and that is how he learned the no water change method. I picked up some plants and listened to stories it was well worth the visit. Thank you for getting this little place on my radar Cory. I will go back for some fish, couldn't do that today because I was waiting in SF all day for my son's flight.
I lived in San Francisco for several years and just lived a few blocks away from Justin Lau and his wife's shop. I visited every week to support his shop learned everything from them and I've never done water changes on any of my tanks because of his advice. His fish and tanks are literal proof the ecosystems shouldn't be disturbed. Fast forward I live elsewhere now in the country but follow the same advice. I didn't put a heater in with my Betta who is 3 years old now, he's never gotten sick. His tank is fully planted. My oldest tetras are almost 4 years old. The only fish I've had ever fall I'll were in quarantine after purchasing, because I hadn't noticed any illness after purchase. Never once after placed in my tanks. I'm so grateful I found his shop and listened to him!
I used to live on Geary a short walk to this beautiful store im so glad to see it still operating after all these years the owner is awesome I used to live in this store practically everyday we became friends over the years when I lived there I was also in the fish business it was in the early 2000's I would love to someday bring my son back to see it one day so many memories
The second time I've watched this video and I just love it. It's so incredibly soothing! I can totally see being stuck in there for hours and not knowing why they are telling me to get out they are closing. LOL Thank you for all the fish room tours!
So beautiful - I love these natural planted tanks more than anything else. The fish look so good and healthy. Takashi Amano's work is stunning but I prefer this stuff. Thanks so much for showing us this!
I used to be about water changes. But then I realized all my tanks are heavily planted. I would test the waters and my waters were worse every time I did a water change compare to a top off. Yes I used Prime but iv notice in the tanks the flunctaions were up and down to much. Where as top off was better for both the fish and the plants. I add Seachem weekly for missing minerals. My babies are happy
Wow! Wish this was near me! You can plainly see this store owner truly loves his fish. The quality of the stock and the carefully crafted habitats speak volumes. WELL DONE!!
Every elitist fish keepers head exploded. When you said water changes don't happen. Should see the reaction I get on forums when I tell people I never do water changes on my 200 gallon tank with 45 fish in it.
There are no "elitist" fishkeepers. There are just different ways of fishkeeping. You can't have an scaped tank witbout water change, this will not work. People who commute on bike will not have an exploded head if you tell them, you car makes 150 miles. Beside that, talking about some hated elites of fishkeepers who do things differently does not make you a better fishkeeper yourself...
I just added the hornwort. I’ve had duckweed for awhile, along with a few other plants. I’d love to try the water hyacinth. Looked it up and it’s pretty! I’m thinking I might try “not” changing water anymore. I’m scared though. I suppose, as long as water tests ok, no need to change.
Ive gone from having a 4k ltr pond and several tanks 4 months ago to having nothing now. Life decided to rearrange my circumstances. I miss my fish soooo much! sitting by the pond was my daily dose of calm and the sound of my tanks burbling away was so peaceful. I love this vid, it makes me profoundly happy.
My family and I visited today. Thank you Cory for featuring that store. Lots of plants and fish to look at. This is literally a mom and pop store. It’s in a little street in the City away from the main road. Parking can be an issue. Today I bought some beautiful petrified wood for my aquascaping project. Will be back for plants and fertilizer and fish.
Love the natural tanks. I'm trying like heck to develop environments like this for my betas and puffers. Even my one goldfish tank is becoming a mossy plant wonderland. One fun thing I've been able to do is take some tiny water lily pups and plant them in my small tanks. Largest tank is 15g. When the lilies get too big, they move into a pot and into the fountain. I just go get another pup and the cycle starts again. It's fun!
Same here!, i used to struggle with algae and water parameters fluctuations. I added a bunch of plant. I choose fast growing plants and now i just do top offs and no water changes at all. Lack of swimming space for the fish is the only disadvantage.
Love this video. I think I could visit that store everyday! 😃 I was especially impressed with the 25 year tank and I really liked how the store owner used styrofoam up the walls and floating to anchor plants. All the tanks are lovely ecosystems. Ingenuity at it's best. Thanks for all the inspiration! You post great videos full of great ideas. I've learned a lot. Thank you, and keep up the good work!
I was wondering today if doing aquaponics with my already planted fish tank would be possible. Well, it seems this shop answers my question. Not only possible, but it also could reduce maintenance! Awesome shop!
The clown killis at the beggining look so beautiful, and all the naturalistic tanks are so awesome compared to holding tanks at places like petco, I'd love to spend a few hours in that store
that is the aquarist-syndrome :-) there is always a more beautiful tank or maybe a tank that has another style or setup that you also want. it's why the tanks always seem to become more and more and more :-D
Just recently cleaned out a tank that I had wild guppies in, about 2 years. And yes it was heavily planted and there was no sickness. I had put about 15 fry (from another tank) into it and counted about over a hundred.
My favorite fish store by far. I buy most of my stuff elsewhere, since I don't live in the city, but I make a trip out to Ocean every few months just to look around.
we have an aquarium for 4 years not once water changes, nor fish loss but allot of live plant! anubias nana, water sprite, java fern, algae blooms love it ...
The second I saw the title of this video I knew exactly which LFS you were talking about, even though I had no idea you were in SF! I love that little hole-in-the-wall, best place for fish in San Francisco.
This little store really is a hidden gem. They have an old/large colony of Apistogramma Cacatuoides Triple Red, that produce some of the best looking Triple Red Cacatuoides juviniles that I've ever seen. They're bred in store, and they pretty much always have some available. You could technically call them Pentacle Reds or Super Reds, as some have red/black on all of their fins. His fish are some of the most hardiest that I've ever kept. Never had one die on me, soon after a purchase. The owner and his wife are really sweet/kind. They'll sometimes offer a discount, if you purchase smaller size fish or fry.
My brother and I visited this store a few weeks ago when we were in the bay area and the owner is easily one of the nicest guys we've met in the hobby.
Beautiful naturalistic aquascapng really brings out the beauty of the fish. Would love to have heard something from the designer/gardner/scaper about the aesthetic/biological principles guiding their choices of plants, stone & wood as well as lighting. Thirty years ago I met a man in San Francisco who made his living growing many species of aquatic flora both fresh and saltwater for the local aquarist market. Which is quite an accomplishment considering the cost of living there. Might make a good subject for a future video :)
wow. this place is amazing. those fish look really healthy. what a unique place. i wish you would have spoken to the owner on camera and picked his brain a bit for what ever he was willing to share. great video.
Thank you for what you do... I have a 165-liter tank... (AquaStyle 850) No changing the water since she was filled up at xmas time, only top ups etc. as we speak the fish are happily swimming at all levels. Water crystal clear. :) Smells like a tropical tank should :). pH is around 7.4 p.s. The filter circulates 1,000 liters an hour.
It's refreshing to see different ways the hobby is done. Especially when the methods seem so far-fetched, but they work! Hope their store has much success in business and rapport.
Haven't seen such an amazing old and fancy looking store in my whole life! Thx for sharing great stuff like that :) I absolutely enjoy watching your vids. Greetings from Germany ;) Max
All of these tanks seem to grow together with the plants coming out of the top. And they were all so lush and well planted, not a bad spot in the place :)
And then You see people on fb groups saying they water change every 2 days this is proof there is no need good plants and good filtration is all it takes
The bit that I'm positive of is that It's providing substrate to keep the plants anchored. The bit that I'm not so sure of and hopefully someone else could elaborate on is that it's providing a deep bed for beneficial bacteria I think. But again, I'm not sure as I've never kept my substrate higher than an inch or so.
My brothers left his aquarium at home when he moved out. There are 3 fish in it which are around 10 years old now. We haven't changed the water since then. It's like they will never die😂 no need to change water ever
"I don't know if there's any fish in there, but it's a wonderland". Haha - quote of the video! Love all your videos, but this one is one of my favorites in a while! Makes me want to look more at a sustainable aquatic ecosystem.
I have a 29 gallon planted tank that I started as an experiment and so far it’s gone 11 months without water change. There’s like 12-14 fish in it, several species. A sponge filter that I left in there because that’s what I started the tank with, and haven’t had to clean it at all either...
Great fish store in my City of SF! The owner inspired me to do similar setups to my Betta bowls and also a Betta sorority tank. Thanks for highlighting this place. Just note, the neighborhood is kinda crap, but still worth many visits.
Talk about a brand new scene at every turn! Pristine aquascapes are beautiful but there's something so soothing with it being planted and letting it grow and full in the tank naturally
Absolutely incredible. Thanks for sharing this with us. Very inspirational and I love the fact that he uses natural methods in the best possible way to keep his tanks clean, filtered and fish looking very happy/unstressed.
This channel will be mostly what the majority of viewers want. The analytics show that shorter content is that. We will/do produce longer videos on our second channel Jimmy of Aquarium Coop. Also I went back and checked out the playlist for Fish Store Tours. The longest one ever was about 30 minutes, with most being in that 12-17 minute range. Most stores themselves just don't have enough tanks to fill 45 minutes. Here is the playlist if you want to check out the older tours ;) The Japanese ones are my favorite. ruclips.net/video/_0TY4UJxqHM/видео.html
I look forward to more content on the other channel. I know you do it for a reason but 5 minute unboxing videos don't really float my boat. Yes I'm a fish nerd! )
Unfortunately, it’s hard to survive on RUclips making 30+ minutes videos. Ideally around 10 minutes is the best and will appease to a larger audience. So while long time viewer may feel betrayed, new viewers may like it. It’s very hard for an entertainer to keep all of his guests engaged :)
i think this video cured my depression ...im kidding but in all seriousness i think if i lived in that place it actually would cure it lol... i need more plants! and more fish!! and more tanks!!!
It's the anoxic environments in the several-inch deep sand bottoms, and the plants. Those two things take waste back out of the water. (I only just learned this today.)

is it just me, or is the sound of a fish store wonderfully soothing? All that bubbling water.
I definitely feel at home with the noise ;)
My dad worked for the EPA (back when they were GOOD), and the sounds and smells of the giant lab tanks for experiments gave me that same feeling.
The bubbling sound, the natural smell, the lightings from each different tank, even the humid atmosphere... I LOVE it all!!

Where is it? Want to see with my bear eyes?
@@khonthainaidc San Francisco. It’s called Ocean Aquarium, I’ve been there myself last week and man it was amazing to see it in person.

Check out the Walstad method, I think you will appreciate her book...
Cool....anyway, how did you plant amazon sword in a small 5 gal?
So I just went there today and had a wonderful experience

Visited the store after watching the video. Very generous and genuine owners in sharing knowledge!

water doesn't need to be changed, waste needs to be exported
plants thrive off of waste
Enough duckweed and never have to change water. Basic science. Those elitists don’t understand ecosystems.

craddocraddoc I think “elitists” fish keepers are those that think their way is the best way to do things.
I only use water hyacinths and never do water changes. It's the most effective natural filter for aquatic tank. It even can absorb heavy metals
Thats cool. Had no idea. Will have to invest in some. Thanks
Thank you! I’ll be adding these!
duckweed and hornwort are also really good additions for zero water change tanks
I have a frogbit root jungle tank, somehow it’s growing tall and out of the water.
Gosh, I love that Clown Killi tank.
So simple and so awesome.
3 minutes in and I am thinking these are the best tanks I have ever seen! Real depth, growth on the sides and amazing fish!
Epic.

I would love to hear more about his substrate methods. Also, that co2 rig. Thank you for uncovering this hidden treasure. Beautiful tanks and store!

Oh interesting, I'll want to check that out when I go to LA.
Nice! Thanks for sharing. This is about 40 miles north of me. Time for a little day trip up to S.F.!
ARG, I was in Auburn, Cali like a week ago. I should have popped over to San Fran to see this beautiful place.

Very beautiful & natural fish room @ that store.
And then You see people on fb groups saying they water change every 2 days this is proof there is no need good plants and good filtration is all it takes
Wayne. What is the reason for the pebbles in the betta jars?
The bit that I'm positive of is that It's providing substrate to keep the plants anchored. The bit that I'm not so sure of and hopefully someone else could elaborate on is that it's providing a deep bed for beneficial bacteria I think. But again, I'm not sure as I've never kept my substrate higher than an inch or so.
Owner explained the system is simply three or more (additional is better) inches of gravel and the beneficial bacteria. He uses microbe lift brand.
@@jasminflower3814 It might be for a heat sink, to absorb heat and reduce temperature fluctuations, since a deep gravel bed absorbs heat.
My brothers left his aquarium at home when he moved out. There are 3 fish in it which are around 10 years old now. We haven't changed the water since then. It's like they will never die😂 no need to change water ever

This guy is the OG of natural fish keeping😎
That's an awesome looking fish store!
Talk about a brand new scene at every turn! Pristine aquascapes are beautiful but there's something so soothing with it being planted and letting it grow and full in the tank naturally
Ty for showing this I'm going to visit this store
I planted lemon basil in some areas of my paludarium lately and it has taken over. I think I have a mini version of this shop here for sure.
Really relaxing vid! Thanks!! 😃
🔥🤣 hey Cory... Is it "super cool"🤣🔥
Thanks for sharing this Cory. Love the aquariums here. So natural and beautiful.
Absolutely incredible. Thanks for sharing this with us. Very inspirational and I love the fact that he uses natural methods in the best possible way to keep his tanks clean, filtered and fish looking very happy/unstressed.
Man I love the 45 min tours you used to do. Will everything from now on be short?
Yes I'm a fish nerd! )
Aquarium Co-Op Yeah bring back those 45 minute super nerd videos,Its what set you apart
I also wish this one was longer. Too short for such a cool spot, felt like 2 mins.
THIS IS SO FREAKING INSPIRING AND BEAUTIFUL
EXCUSE ALL CAPS, THIS HAS GENUINELY GIVEN ME A NEW LEASE OF LIFE
i think this video cured my depression
...im kidding but in all seriousness i think if i lived in that place it actually would cure it lol...
i need more plants! and more fish!! and more tanks!!!
I am curious, why you commented on the deep gravel for the male bettas ? Should betta tanks have a deeper gravel?
That is an amazing store! Lots of inspiration to be found; in gonna be trying that plant raft out myself.
The owner of Ocean Aquarium has some brilliant ideas!
Holy, the tank with the Harlequin Rasboras! So beautiful.
Let's play a drinking game guys, every time Cory says super cool you gotta drink xD
It's the anoxic environments in the several-inch deep sand bottoms, and the plants. Those two things take waste back out of the water. (I only just learned this today.)
My god it looks so beautiful
what an awesome store. I could spend an entire day in there....
