The place that has the amazing bulk section is called Central Market, it's like the elevated version of HEB, but they are the same brand. I really love how you put this together.
What Arlo's did you guys go to?
Shelbizleee 🤤 My mom and I miss Central Market so much from the time we lived in Houston! That bulk section is AMAZING. The closest things we have in Las Vegas seem to be either Whole Foods or WinCo (which doesn’t take kindly towards reusable bulk bags 😔).
I’m so glad that you and Immy met up and will be doing a collaboration video! The two of you have really helped me transition and stick to a more eco-friendly way of life. ❤️❤️❤️
I live in San Antonio and Central Market has some of the best bulk options here as well.
Also the bulk section at Sprouts is a good (and cheaper) option than Central Market but it doesn't have such a large variety. I really enjoy going there, HEB and Central Market for my bulk shopping. If it weren't for those stores, it would be almost impossible to be low impact.
It looks like they went to the one at Spiderhouse.

Austin would be better if it wasn't Texas. Texas sucks. NO NATURE! Can't wait to gtfo to Asheville NC or Seattle WA.
Glad you had a great time in Austin! I've been on the Zero Waste Advisory Commission for over a year trying to implement our city's zero waste goal by the 2040 deadline. We also have a Net-Zero emissions goal for 2050 to combat climate change. Come back and have another visit sometime soon!

Shelbi's right. Not much public transportation in the United States. Of couse, most major cities have it. But, if your in the suburbs not so much. So, you have to drive. 😣 Great video, love the collab!
For some there is also a sort of stigma with using public transportation.

I've been slowly implementing all of your low impact tips into my life and a lot of my friends are catching on as well. Immy, I've lived in Austin for 6 months 6 years ago (I'm from Germany and spent a semester abroad there) and it's so nice to see you in such familiar places. I completely get what you meant earlier when you were talking about being relying on a car though. Totally agree with you on the green part. We lived near Bull Creek and I related when you picked up trash - cause that's what I did when I last visited in 2016! I'm moving to London in March for an internship in sustainability and I'm crossing my fingers to perhaps have the pleasure to meet you and/or work with you. Best

Winco is another great bulk food store with good prices and vegan options that is popular around the south. It is so hard here in the south to be even remotely sustainable/low impact. I got my whole office recycling bins but our office building - even though it supposedly has access to the city's recycling resources - will not recycle for us. There are so many hurtles like that...it's discouraging. Getting my food somewhere that does bulk is one thing I can do at least. I like the travel videos and seeing how place influences how green you can be. Thanks!

I live down the road in San Antonio and while we don’t have alllll the options Austin offers, these tips mostly apply for SA as well. Have you tried sprouts. They have 2 in SA I go to regularly and they just started a few weeks ago carrying 99c bulk bags. Also every reusable bag you use even the bulk bags you get 5c off your purchase. Every Wednesday is double add Wednesday so you tend to have more things on sale then. I just started going waste free in SA if you have found any great places or tips please let me know I have been trying to get to know more people doing this in our city.
As someone from America, it's interesting to hear your perspective about urban sprawl and relying on cars. It's all I've ever known, so it would be interesting to go to Europe and experience close knit cities
First of all, I love your channel, so inspiring! I'm so glad you got to visit Austin! You should come visit San Antonio, it's neighbor. It's unfortunate about the zero waste store that closed. Next time you should check out Wheatsville coop, they have a pretty good bulk section. As for San Antonio, our Whole Foods bulk section sucks and you do have to shop around for certain bulk items. It's also great that Austin has banned plastic bags in its stores, SA is trying to do the same and I hope we do soon! Keep up the great work!

I’m so glad you loved Austin! Arlo’s is one of my FAVORITE places here (besides Jinya Ramen). Their burger is honestly one of the best I’ve had 🤤 HEB is just like a normal (very large) grocery store! They have them in most cities and towns in Texas. So cool to see this!

Omg.. I so want to go back! Austin was so over my expectations too. I loved the greenery and the food as well. I remember in that area where you were that I saw a sign where the city is trying to educated people what happens to the waste that they throw away. And the city has a goal of being zero waste. However, I have heard it is very different in other parts of Texas and I have heard from my vegan/vegetarian friends that its harder to find that in other parts of Texas (like for example Dallas).
Isabel Lee absolutely! I never been to Dallas so I only speak from a friend’s experience and she said it was more selection and easier to access in Austin. I have only been to Houston airport but my vegan friend who has family there seems to approve of their selection. Would love to visit both places soon to explore myself!

Sprouts is also a great option for bulk and organic buying in Austin. A bit more affordable than Whole Foods and Central Market. Love to see Austin in a video. Lived there for 14 years until I returned to Germany in 2013. YAY Austin!!!!

Some the only problem I’ve faced with HEB’s bulk section is that they don’t tare your containers. So you have to pay the extra weight :/ Fortunately, there is a Sprouts Farmers Market near by and they do.
Flashtheturtle I’m in SA too, and I prefer Sprouts and Whole Foods for getting my containers’ tares. They are used to being asked for them.

You can use reusable produce bags in HEB and they do sell them there they just tend to be hidden. Just ask or check out their app!

I moved to Austin and went to the zero waste store (I'm assuming you were speaking about in.gredients?). However, I found that their definition of zero waste was that they compost expired food. The store itself sold many items in packaging I recognized as not being recyclable, which confused me a bit.

I'm loving your honest traveling adventures and omg so envious of the food, it looks amazing. I also support the picking up of litter even when you're on holiday/ traveling. My partner and i started a litter picking group (Plymouth UK) and so far we have collecte 940 (100L) bags since March... we aren't recycling much just yet because most of it is disgusting but we are working on it. but could you tell me why living in a flat has more impact than living in a van ?
Driving a van seems to spend lots of gasoline to live. Or is it an electromobile ?
Isn't it more low-impact to use public transport ?
I'd love to know the reason !
I realy enjoy yor videos so so so much!! I follow your journey to a sustainable life a little while now (something around 2 years now) and your vids are alway inspiriring to me.
But I have a question, thats growing bigger and bigger: How do you see the future of traveling in general?
I've just learned today that if we like to limit the increas of global temperature to 2 degrees Celsius, everyone on earth has to cut it's overall carbon dioxide production to around 2.7 metric tons per year. Flying one way between London and NY produces between 1 and 3 metric tonns of CO2 (depending on the calculator that's used). To produce 1kg of beef, that would be 13kg of CO2 production and for 1kg plastic it would be 6kg CO2. You see were I'm going wirh this.
How are you dealing with this reaching so much big goals reducing plastic, beeing vegan..., but burn the success when went traveling by plane? I see that there is no real alternative, because your bf lives in the US, exept one if you consider moving maybe. ;D
But what can one do? Do you think, that donating money as comparison is a reasonable strategy? What can we do to make airlines to spend more money in developing new engins (maybe hydrogen powered?) or to reduce tralevling by plane for the job... and so on?
I would be thrilled to know what you think of all this.
