Do you experience phantom pain or phantom paresthesia? Your brain took a long time to develop proprioception of your own parts. It won’t forget that quickly either. Many amputees continue to perceive pain and odd sensations as if the limb is intact. You can even trick your brain into believing you are hurt if you stab a maniquin arm where your brain perceives your actual arm SHOULD be located using mirrors or screens. The emotional feeling of loss is going to be with you the same as if you lost a loved one. Reminders of the loss will likely cause your brain to access the feelings of the original loss. Evaluating your feelings, as you are doing in this video, may help you desensitize some of the strength of the emotional responses.

Jim, I could sew up that edge after cutting the fingers, even serge the seam. Let me know if I can help.

At the risk of being nosey, do you publicly share any details on how you arrived at this compromised physical state?

Yes, I had a mitral valve repair surgery that went horrifically wrong on December 8, 2021. I was in a coma for nearly two months and on ECMO for about two months. Prolonged use of vasopressor drugs (over two months) killed my fingers and feet.
My feet were amputated on February 8, 2022, and the fingers on my right and left hands were amputated in June and July of 2022, respectively. I left the hospital and came home (with no skilled home care) on April 14, 2022. I looked like I had been liberated from a concentration camp-all of my muscle tone was gone. I couldn’t even share our bed with my wife because I couldn’t roll over
Now, due to the wonderful people at Fyzical Therapy and Balance Center in DeLand, FL, a lot of very hard work, and my faith in Jesus Christ, I’m about to be independent enough to drive, by myself. I’ve worked very hard to get to where I am now, and I won’t quit.

I apologize for that, but this video was a response to a very visceral feeling that I HAD actually cut off my own fingers. I was still in shock when I recorded and posted it.
