Finally, a review on this laptop!
Josh, the best video I have seen from you. By far the best! Not a single drop of stress or anxiety in your voice, extremely pleasant to watch. Give you 10 thumbs up. Please keep in mind however, not to show only keyboard temperatures, but also CPU temperatures as well, or also GPU temps. Also keep in mind that subtle differences in GeekBench single-core scores are meaningless for everyday use. You do not even feel it. What is important is compiling speeds (for developers) throttle %, temperatures, noise, and battery life for light tasks (developing). Moreover, I do not know if you are able to do that but it would make sense to talk about eye -strain. And by the way, Josh, please you and your colleagues push the right companies to speed up e-ink display development for saving our eyes.

Waiting on your final review, but overall a very helpful video, specially the comparison between the G14 and the transcend. I think I’ll go towards the G14, mainly because I’ll travel a lot with it and will use it mostly for gaming (not particularly triple A games, and I’ve never been too fussed about graphics, but the portability and knowing it will run whatever I throw at it is an assurance). Also, that usb charging problem is concerning🧐

I got the 14" Transcend, overall a very nice laptop, BUT the battery life is disappointing, and I feel duped once again by Intel. I just initiated my return, let's see if Josh can convince me to change my mind. I do agree the Omen is mostly silent a machine, but so is a laptop that ran out of battery. :) The screen set to 70% brightness, key lighting off, and balanced mode watching RUclips eats 20%-25% per hour. So assume 5-6ish hours of battery life for non-heavy use. The dongle being referred to (wrong term used) is built in connection to the headset. So no headset dongle is needed and you save an I/O port. Totally agree on the audio quality, on the Omen, it's okay, and passable as far as Windows laptops go, but not great like the G14. I like this live review, Josh, it feels fresh and less scripted.
Yes, mine's got faulty drive. I guess I'm not lucky to get the correct one coz mine got Intel EVO Edition logo instead of Intel Core Ultra 9 logo. Straight away I suspect something fishy until I run some tests and whala, faulty drive, cursor pad nonresponsive at times and very slow at times.
Of course I still want a replacement of nonfaulty one and with correct logo in front.
@@eljin_2004 I had some issues right away with mine, mainly the mouse was jumping all over the place and I had a hard time controlling it. And Overwatch was lagging about every 4-6 seconds. I am sure these are issues that will not be widespread of they will be resolved via updates. I was on with tech support for a good hour the first night I got mine. I think I got most of the buggy experience behind me. With that said, I am about 70% of the way there to putting it in the box and returning it tomorrow. But I do like this thing in many ways. I do already have the return shipping label. HP's customer service actually was good (for me), so no real complaints there. I am now debating on either replacing it with a 16" in Omen, Asus G16, or just waiting a few more months to see what else is coming out. Playing Overwatch on a 14" screen actually is much harder than I thought it would be. So, not as much of a fan as the 14" portable gaming laptop because if I have a hard time gaming, well then it defeats the purpose. Others with better eyes may feel differently :)
@@evancycles yeah I was thinking about the 16 and having Ryzen instead than Meteor Lake which is kind of still in the early stages of development.
Thats surprising since another hp laptop the x360 16" version with dedicated gpu, and also meteor lake processor has decent battery life according to Marc Andrew David.

I have the Transcend 14 with the 4070 and 32gb RAM. I like the build, with rounded edges and corners and that smooth magnesium/alu feel. You nailed the comparison to the MacBook-it’s not there, but also not leagues away, and doesn’t feel cheap at all. I like the pudding keycaps, and the OLED is beautiful. I also really like the lack of noise-it’s not just db-wise, but also it’s just a pleasant deeper-than-Asus whoosh.
That said, there’s two fatal flaws in this “gaming laptop.” No Gsync, instead whatever random VRR they claim to have-screen tearing is really apparent.
And the inexcusable: HP is running the 4070 at 50w. You can add 15w dynamic boost from the omen gaming hub, but it often wont boost at all and you’ll sit around 48-50w. It’s slower than my Asus Z13 with a 4060…
It’s blazing fast for productivity work, and I’ve tested the NPU with AI workloads and it’s really quite efficient. It’s about 50% more efficient than the new Ultra CPU, and 25% more efficient than the new Arc GPU.
The Arc GPU is a nice step forward, also.
My numbers in geekbench were 2542 single, 14413 multi, 25749 arc, and 93345 4070. Good numbers, but they don’t hold up with both CPU and GPU stressed, and the frame rates are poor for a 4070.
Disappointed in this one.

I do have a transcend 14 (4070/ultra 185) and it *does* support the +15W GPU boost (max-Q). It's in Omen control center, under the performance power mode switcher button. There is an "advanced settings" link and you can adjust the boost (+0, 5, 10, 15W) and impact on battery (10% to 40%)...
how much wattage with gpu boost? you happy with the performance?
@@Shagrathhhhthat'd be 65W + 15W = 80W. Performance is great for me - latest games runs just well with all options on. Of course it won't be as "extreme" as say 16 inches machines with 4090 and high end core i9, but this is really a small and light machine. Perfectly fits the bill.

A quick suggestion. You should definitely consider doing a video about laptops that support Linux. I have read a number of Reddit posts from folks reporting problems with their touchpad not responding, audio not working, and driver issues. For Linux users, selecting the perfect laptop such as myself would be helpful.

One thing I noticed when I used G14 and Transcend is my eyes not liking the G14, no matter which setting tried. However the Transcend 14 is more high-index eyes friendly!

I Love 16 inches Laptop having a good Performance with a longer Battery Life.
I want to love this laptop. It is really a great piece of technology, but unfortunately i had a terrible speaker issue. Only one speaker was working properly the other one was really low in volume. I updated every possible driver and tried (every) possible solution but nothing helped. I don't know if this is a hard- or a software problem. Maybe this could be fixed in the future with some updates. Sad that i have to send it back :(

@@Mountje1985 well that's subjective. by professional I ment if for instance you take your g14 to your workplace nobody would say it's a gaming laptop. Omen's keyboard lighting has a bit of gaming look.
Hey, one question what is the battery usage in balanced mode while just doing things like browsing or watching youtube or something.
After about a week, and ensuring everything has been updated, I've been somewhat disappointed with battery life. I've been averaging about 3.5-5 hours for work using Edge, Slack, light RUclips vids, half screen brightness, in balanced mode. I've seen 5-6 hours for just watching videos on VLC, forcing the GPU off at just below half brightness. Only time I've managed around 7 hours is by lowering brightness to about 2 notches above the lowest, forcing GPU off, turning off Wifi/Bluetooth, and using Eco Mode. My issue with Eco Mode is that I haven't really found it to be worth the performance hit as it becomes a bit slow and stuttery . I like the laptop but would have easily taken a heavier/thicker laptop for better speakers and a bigger battery.

Damn wish you were reviewing the 14 inch version of the Lenovo yoga 9i, especially to compare against all the multitude of 14 inch laptops you already tested. 16 inch seems a waste imo.
It does support CASO tho, so the lack of a MUX isn't too much of a problem, thankfully.
Thank heavens....tho lack of the MUX & advanced optimum are definitely a very weird choice

Hey Josh and Team, if you were to buy a developer laptop right this week. From all the ones YOU have seen so far (even if the review is not up yet), which one would you get? I am ALWAYS bummed about the amount of RAM on these great machines. Every time I think I have found a great model, the 32GB model is either non existent or only on an upgraded model with a huge price bump! Please help! I do enjoy some light gaming from time to time but I'm literally THIS close to just closing my eyes and buying a MB Pro either 14 or 16 inch. So tired of this lol.
If you want to save money the old G14 is for sale for $999 at Best Buy with 16GB of ram and an open RAM slot. Can easily be upgraded to 64GB for under $1100.

Hey Josh just wanted to let you know. In Malaysia the G14 2024 is coming with 32GB of Ram and a 4060. That’s the highest end config without the 4070 being available. It’s around 1800 USD. Any thoughts on that?

If i connect this laptop to a high refresh rate tv (lg c2) via the hdmi (using hdmi 2.1 cable) will this increase the performance bypassing the igpu or should i use the thunderbolt 4, C port to hmdi 2.1. any advice goes appreciated 👍
Also just an fyi I just connected the HDMI out of this laptop to a lg c2 television via HDMI 2.1 cable and the time spy scores were pretty much the same
The HDMI port is connected directly to the GPU so you should get higher performance compared to using the thunderbolt

@@umarsaddiq7195 No worries, i havent run any benchmarks but i went from around 50fps to 60fps when playing starfield connected to the hdmi port compared to the thunderbolt/USB C port. Maybe test out a game or something and see if the performance is different for you.
Also, make sure you have the laptop set to performance mode in the omen gaming app and enable the 15 watt boost. That might also help
Which one is the best option for a programmer between HP Omen 14 and HP spectre x360 of this year?
My wife and I bought both. Spectre is so much nicer it’s not even a competition. Wish I had also ordered one when they were on sale.
Computer Engineering Student and learning SWE for reference
Spectre x360 has a grainy screen due to their touch layer (Samsung, for example, is able to add a touch layer without a grainy grid...). HP never learns. HP Omen has the same screen but it's not grainy (without touch) so it looks close to perfect. Plus, Omen has a dedicated GPU, which is helpful for ML, if you need it, and overall is much faster than Arc iGPU
@@olegostash9953 the screen on our spectre looks better than the screen on the omen. Have both in front of me now.
If you arent doing any graphic engines or codes for gaming then the spectre is going to be a way better bang for buck.
Can you also possibly review 2024 Acer Swift X 14 120hz Oled and 4070? Seems like it can compete against the HP and Asus but many reviews ignore Acer in general for some reason.
Someone I know bought an acer convertible sent it for repairs like all 6 months, then sold it back to acer after 2 years of problems for 60-70% of the price
maybe because it's a creator laptop not a gaming laptop. And so are some vivobooks, samsung book pros, They are also kinda never brought up. It's more to do with the popularity of their usecase than anything else.

My biggest thing is the weight I want a good laptop it balances both the CPU and GPU. I rather have a laptop that gives up a little of both like Lenovo - Slim Pro 7 14" and have the most powerful gPU or CPU in a computer. I'm not an Apple fan so their computers never have been on my radar for very long. But I do like this computer although I think the way it's a little much for what there is I think they could have made it a tiny bit lighter.

I just got mine with "Intel Ultra 9" version but on the keyboard it says "Intel Evo Edition". I'm just wondering if thAt makes a difference coz I wanted to have the Intel Core Ultra 9 sticker on it. I know it sounds silly but I paid a hefty price for it and I don't the Intel Core Ultra 9 sticker on it.

To anyone wondering how the Omen performs compares to the G14, the time spyscore that Josh got in this video was:
Graphics: 7,665
CPU: 11,128
I also watched GizmoSlipTech's G14 review and he got:
Graphics: 11,546
CPU: 10,806
Both have 4070's but the Omen's 4070 is so undervolted and the omen doesn't have a mux switch which the G14 does. I was leaning more towards the omen in the beginning as I like that it's cooler and I like its aesthetic more but honestly now I'm thinking G14 is the way to go for me.
This fella has the 4060 version. I have the Transcend 14 (4070 & ultra 9) and time spy scores are graphics: 9600-9800 and 11600-12000 for the CPU scores. So it's not miles behind in terms of performance.

Ran the multicore again and got a measly 719 pts.
