That lightning bolt running from Atlanta to Alabama is the Silver Comet Trail. A former railroad bed converted to cycling and jogging. The glow SSW of Atlanta is Peachtree City. 100+ miles of cart paths. I even found the Kenwood Park track I rode on today.
The demilitarised zone between South and North Korea is fascinating. At the western end it appears that one scallywag actually ran across the border before their track stops abruptly on the North side!
It would be cool to see a time lapse of the heatmap data from over the years. Select a certain city and watch as the data is collected from the first strava upload there till now, and watch as the rides sprawl outwards. Also, it would be great if you could select time of day on the heat map. A back country road near me in Brisbane is great to ride, as long as it is before 8am when the bus route starts and the trucks start running down it. After 8am it becomes a deathtrap, but anyone looking at the heatmap sees a popular route.
Here in Niterói - RJ, in Brazil , we live near the city of Rio de Janeiro, and theres a lot of people getting the "ferry" to go from Niteroi to Rio de Janeiro every day, and this shows the bikes going in the water: labs.strava.com/heatmap/#13.37/-43.15806/-22.90175/blue/ride
Watopia is there!!! Golden Cheetah plotted it on an island called Te Anu near Naunonga in the Solomon Islands or more specifically Santa Cruz Islands. Southeast of San Cristobal. NE of Australia across the Coral Sea. I think the coordinates are 166.93164/-11.66938/ on the heatmap. All the routes are there except for the new ones. You can even see the loop up to the radio towers. The Hilly Loop looks the hottest.
Hey Shane, I need to know asap your thoughts on the wahoo kickr version 1 versus version 2 ? I might be able to pick up a 2nd hand version 1 kickr in pretty good quality. Is it worth it ? also what would you look for when looking at a 2nd hand turbo to know if it was kept in good condition
v2 is typically a little quieter. With the new firmware on the v1, they're very similar units. See my video here about what to look for on v1 units for wear and tear: ruclips.net/video/45x2zamskhw/видео.html
Hi Shane. I have a bit of a dilemma. I have about $500 burning a hole in my pocket. I have the Merida Scultura 5000 with ultegra derailleurs, shimano (off series) cranks and brakes, and stock wheels. I am not sure what I should spend it on. New wheels, smart trainer, crankset, brakes, etc. Any ideas? Doing the victoiran interschool cycling series and Hawthorn crits. Anyway, cool video. I think it would be interesting to see the most popular rides in melbourne for various distances. There's a lot of very interesting data there and I will admit I have spent way to many hours on that website.
That's one for a coach who knows you, your riding, your current equipment, your goals, strengths, etc. And if you don't have a coach, there's your answer for that $500.
Is it just me, or is it harder to see the popularity of routes now? For comparison, the old "2014 vs 2015" version is still available and orange colour is best in my opinion. For example having never visited Ballarat it would be very tough for me to plan a good route based on the new heatmap only, because most of the roads look the same. On the old one however, one can clearly see that the road to Buninyong, or Remembrance Dr towards the NW are more popular so I'd investigate those first using Google streetview, ridewithgps etc... Maybe it's just a colour thing but I've seen the same in areas that I know well, where big roads that are distinctly unpleasant and borderline dangerous to ride on, appear the same as nearby routes frequently used by local riders.
I concur! Remembrance Drive has been used for time trial championships (ruclips.net/video/X7KPcJGQRZw/видео.html) and Ballarat IronMan. I wonder if they'll look at enhancing HeatMaps to overlay popular segments to highlight what's popular in more of a consistent timeframe rather than in bursts for events.
We do call the bottom bit by two names - Collar bone corner in polite company - or something else when not in polite company. Any guess why its called Collar bone :)

Awesome review, glad you like the update!
I might be late to the party but the new map feature on Garmin connect has been helping me with runs and cycles throug London!
There's a light trail along the stuart highway from port augusta to darwin in the running tab...wow
Was easy to spot the W&OD (my usual haunt), C&O Canal, and Rock Creek Park trails and the National Mall in and around DC.
Yeah!! Shout out to Vegas! Red rocks is a great ride!
I loved it over there mate. Such big open roads! And Red Rock is an amazing place. Can't wait to get back over there for more rides soon.
Shane Miller when ever you do come back to Vegas, I’d love to go out for a ride! Even though you would kick my butt!

I'd take a guess that it's picked up on some GPX uploads that aren't marked as virtual rides.
It's kind of cool that it's a real place. I wonder how they decided to use Te Anu as the basis for Watopia.

wow quick reply, thanks !
Europe is like the glowing beautiful centre of a galaxy ☺️
It looked like central Europe is the brightest spot in the world.
Belgium & Holland are clearly the most active
It would be awesome if you can actually download individual routes like movecounts

You should check out Watopia.
In theory it shouldn't be on there - "We also exclude any “virtual” activities, such as Zwift rides, because these activities contain fake GPS data."
Stromlo Forest Park in Canberra. Glows so bright you need sunglasses
But the shape of that crit circuit...... 🍆

There’s one heck of a hardy soul cycling in the far north of Greenland 😬
Just check The Netherlands, I live in Amersfoort
Italian alps win!😊
South korea looks like a lonely island there :(
jeez, you've so few roads in Oz.
I TOLD them Watopia was real! Check out the Solomon Islands!
North western Washington
Russia like Mordor
1 billion car and motorcycle trips
We need Microsoft Clippy level AI to ask "Are you really sure this wasn't in a car?" for rides >60km/h on city streets.
Or the 'seems legit' meme
