I hope this means Fender have invested in strong future updates of Firmware etc and really immerse themselves fully into the modeller world.
I think a Helix 2.0 with Profiling etc would sway me as I think Line 6 have been very good to us regarding the richness of updates.

This is, hands down, the finest review of these two great processors. And, it is great to see someone actually purchasing both for the review, instead of relying on the company to send a free sample for "review" (in other words, compensation in exchange for a good review). Your independence brings so much more gravity to your work and findings. Great stuff!!

Thank you, Leo, for this thorough in-depth comparison - you've put a lot of work in it! Very useful! I prefer the sound of Fender Tone Master Pro though, as it is closer to the real amp (to my ears and taste), as the real amps in your test are also somewhat darker and mellower than both amp modellers. I also prefer the size and tougher tank-built-look of Fender, which might work better for the stage conditions - but I have to try out both units myself in person in order to have a well-based opinion - this is just my impression from the video test.

The Tone Master is a lot bigger than I realized. I have a Helix, Axe-Fx III and a Quad Cortex. I think they all sound different and love them all for what they do. I don't see at this point I would need to add the Tone Master to my collection. With the addition of the desktop editor for the Quad Cortex and also a firmware update to it since yesterday it's what most people wanted and Neural has delivered even though it took a lot longer than their customers had hope but so far it has worked flawlessly.

Agree 100% with your 2 cents. QC desktop editor is out and it's fantastic. QC tones and ease if use make it a winner. However, all these units sound really good and you can't go wrong with any modeler or real amp for great tone today.

I think you bring up a great point about the ToneMaster being young. A really interesting project would be to compare ToneMaster with QC/Helix/etc. with their initial release firmware.
Personally, profiling isn't a feature I care that much about since that's why I buy those units is for others to do that work, lol. But, I also don't think every unit needs that, because at that point, they're all becoming too much the same. They all sound great now, so I don't think you can really go wrong with anything these days.

Actually, your opinion is pretty important. I think Fender has a great product there, but it is 2 years behind Quad Cortex and it is anyone's guess when they will catch or surpass the competition. I don't personally need profiling, but that may be a big deal for many. It still seems to me that Axe FX 3 is the top modeler out there, but it costs a bit more. Thank you for another great review, Leo.

Leo, your reviews just getting better and better! I used my ears..and I agree, the Neural just sounds better. Also, profiling is a powerful "future-proof" feature. I think Fender gets some of its efforts right...but in the end, the ears have to be satisfied and the user has to find it easy to CREATE. We are artists, after all. So, the Fender falls just a little short. But both will make alot of musicians happy. Thank You.

Excellent video and demo song as always Leo. The Tone Master is a good looking unit, but it's missing a lot of key features the QC already has. Like you said, the Fender is in its infancy, so we shall see what support Fender offers. Like another statement a commentor made, if Line 6 made a Helix 2.0 and incorporated the new features the QC/Tone Master have, I'd probably buy that first due to their history of updates and support, but that's just my personal opinion. Can't wait to see how your opinion may change over time while using the Tone Master (or if you sell it or stop using it for any reason). Keep up the good work. God bless and rock on 🎸😎👍

Yes, we have to hope in regular firmware upgrades...for instance in order to add amps, cabs, etc....something Fractal, Line 6, BOSS have done a lot in the past...and are actually continuing doing...This Fender platform for sure needs time to mature and evolve.
      Thank you!

@@Scott__C I agree with you about innovation. Profiling is a key feature of the QC and Kemper and not having that ability in the Fender product that costs the same is a con for purchase. If Fender's modelling sounds as good or better than profiles, it may be a moot point eventually.

My choise would be based first of all based on tone. QC seems a bit better, after features like profiling. QC wins again. Last of all, I would like a smaller size because I would like to use it with to external pedal I have. Which means QC again. The things that the Tonemaster does better I don't care that much about. And the Tonemaster doesn't have enough high gain models. Well yet...

For reference, I use an HX Stomp with a ToneX. I think the QC sounded better, looks better, and would fit a pedalboard more easily. The Fender has a lot going for it, including the user interface, but one big concern I have is firmware / app updates. Fender abandoned the Mustang platform from what I understand. Are they fully committed to support the Tone Master platform ith frequent updates like Line does on the Stomp/Helix/etc.? What are their plans for enhancing the current model through firmware updates? Will they bring a lot more amps, and improve the quality of the ones already there? The QC has an effectively unlimited set of amps to choose from (because captures can be added, commercial, or your own). I think Fender made a mistake by pricing the TMP at this level. Their first modeler/multifx unit should have been more like $800. Only time will tell if they mature this product fully.

When it comes to Fender amps, you can get the same results with the QC or FM3 using the same IR. Also the overdrive section in the Fender device was not really convincing as being more "digital" sounding when used with the amp sims. I will send my Fender device back :-(

Hi Leo, I was waiting for your thoughts on Fender unit. I currently have Kemper Stage and Hx Stomp XL + Tonex. I use kemper for only recording because I've heard it has a lot of switch problems if you use heavily. For band practice and stage do you think Fender or Quad Cortex would be a better / easier solution than Stomp+Tonex? Should I upgrade? I heard both of them are 3+ ms latency. I like the drives on stomp and amps on Tonex. For other effects nobody compares delays or reverbs of these units...

Agreed - especially as someone who personally prefers cleaner sounds.. not a huge fan of heavy distortion personally. I do admittedly like the option for playing some 80s/90s songs I grew up with.. but generally, for playing around on my own, I like clean with the ability to push to the edge of break up… that might tip me towards TMP. I need to dig into some more clean comparison vids. I’d like to buy one of these soon.

Re the Tonemaster, 44.1kHz is the sample rate for A/D conversion, which I believe is perfectly acceptable. That does not necessarily affect the distorted tones’ out of band accuracy. Distortion tones are routinely 2x or 4x or even higher oversampled. As new as the Tonemaster is, I feel safe assuming oversampling is used widely.

QC profile captures feature goes further than even just capturing your own amps, being able to download other people's captures for amps you don't own is fantastic. Add to that Neural recently adding support for their archetype plugins running from the QC, and it just shot to top spot for me, even over the AXE FX. The number of bands and content creators I've seen using the QC live is also pretty staggering, It's either QC or AXE FX3 on stage and at this point I think I see an equal number of both in people's racks

Ciao Leo, the possibility to create profiles is relevant for people who have the amps and cabs. The only amp I could profile is my Blackstar fly 3 or the Roland AC Mobile. Most of us are the so called "Bedroom guitarists". We don´t own a plexi or a soldano or a deluxe reverb, not we do have the space to have one of those beasts at home. I live in a flat in a condo where if I raise the volume of the TV I have my neighbour banging on the door. Not to mention that 1 of those amps cost like the Quad Cortex or the Tone Master. I wonder if you would run a survey how many subscribers of your channel are like me. A friend of mine who runs a music shop told me that 80% of his customers are "bedroom guitarists". They play at home for themself and they don´t have a band or perform live.

    • @schumannzohan
      @schumannzohan Год назад +1

Man, I completely agree with that. I've been playing the guitar for 14 years. At one point, I owned a Fender Twin Reverb, but I eventually sold it. Living in NY, it's challenging to keep giant amps and cabs, and it's not just about the money - it's also about the limited space we have here. That's why I've always relied on modelers. So, I can't really say how a real amp sounds or feels. I listen to the music and then tweak the sound to get it as close to the original song as possible. For those of us who gig frequently and cover songs a lot, having a unit that sounds great and is easy to use on stage is crucial.

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  Год назад +4

Hi, Enrico, thank you for sharing! Let me add, that even if you don't have amps to profile, you can take advantage of the profiling feature of a machine. In fact, many professionals make profiles of their amps, and you can find very good profiles, even of boutique amps, at a small price...I think many "barroom guitarist" take advantage of this feature...for instance available in the ToneX or for the Kemper....If you take a look at NAM, you can notice that it has now a very big library of very good sounding profiles...and many of them are totally free. This is thanks to the profiling option.
      Thank you...interesting discussion.

I prefer the smaller size of the QC. It’s light weight and fits in my gig bag.
I also like that the QC has two XLR inputs. I play acoustic and I use an acoustic preamp (Fire-Eye Red-Eye) with the QC. The preamp can be powered up by using phantom power from the QC. My vocal microphone is attached to the other XLR input on the QC. So for this use case (acoustic + vocal) I really appreciate having two XLR inputs.
With electric guitar I’ve found that Amalgam captures work well for me. I.e. I like captures in the QC.
I play bass as well so the bass amps are useful for me in the QC.
What I miss in the QC is the desktop editor, longer IRs, USB-C and plugins.
I’d like to use the QC as a simple mixer as well. With the current UI this is quite difficult. If I understood correctly Fender has addressed this?
The scribble strips seem really nice!
I can’t wait to see how the Tone Master Pro will evolve in the future. The hardware seems promising and I would assume Fender has good resources to develop the software.

Thank you so much, I'm really happy that you like the video!!! I don't have the FXIII, as I have only the FM3. I would say that FXIII and QC serve different purposes. I mean the QC is pretty portable, has profiling procedure and it's pretty easy to be used. The FX III is bigger and bulkier, and harder to take around for live gigging (I'm not saying it is impossible...but it is for sure harder to bring around than QC). Furthermore it does not have profiling, but it has amazing tweaking options....for instance you can chance the impedance curve, the mic pres...etc....

Frankly my little pedalboard with Keeley Compressor Plus, Keeley AT Super Mod, UA Dream 65, and Keeley Halo is what I have been using at church and it is my sound.

Great video, Leo! Greetings from Brazil! Could you tell us what you prefer between Tone Master pro and Headrush Prime? Thank you

      Hi, thank you so much!
I don't have the Prime...therefore I can't tell from direct experience....but the missing computer app and the primitive cab simulation section in the Prime make me think that I would prefer the Tone Master
      Thank you!

Great video, as always! Looking forward to latency test :D
With that said, I think any comparison of Tone master to any other flagship modeler is futile. Tone master is quite a dumbed down unit with no advanced options, the only thing that puts it in the "flagship" category is the price, and that is only because it has the "Fender" sticker on it. Otherwise it would be in the same price category as any other mid range Chinese modeler.

I'll still be going with the Valeton GP 200 because of the price to performance. For my needs it will be adequate. These units are better (and obviously do different things to the Valeton), but not enough to justify such a huge price. If I was going to spend thousands, then I would go with an Axe-FX III anyway.
