"If you see me saving that just means that uh...I've been hurt before" If that isn't the most relatable sentence lmao thank you for this extremely helpful tutorial!
The eye-opening moment for me was when you started adding in highlights on the edges - immediately my brain went “that’s metal”! Super helpful, thank you! These are the things I want to know, the key features.
Yes, it's stylized, BUT, the rules are REALISTIC and that's why this piece of metal looks believable. And I just love the method of "sculpting and carving" the shapes, so satisfying.
@@Gammatrap Yes, of course, although maybe I'm going to put some reflections of the metal itself, just to add a touch of realism. But the process will be the same as described in this tutorial.
I know this video is long, but I wanted to make the most comprehensive, free tutorial possible for painting stylized metal. In fact, I've recently made an entire playlist of metal tutorials to help! ruclips.net/p/PLySu6Z_hYsvwtISri2gRRT_I-kNGtmV9Y
It's almost impossible to avoid painting metal in sci-fi and fantasy painting. This video provides tremendous value for anyone who, like myself, has struggled to get good metal material renders. Thank you!
hot damn, just discovered you after I was looking up how to paint metal. It was a great video! I love that you explain the thought process and theory so we don't just make 1 to 1 replicas! Thank you again!
I have been referencing this video for YEARS. as a predominantly fantasy / historical painter, I have always tried to avoid painting metal if possible. But that’s, like, not possible. So whenever I’m having a block I watch this video and I feel like a sword painting god. I am so grateful for this video bc it’s so detailed and in depth and it’s FREE. you are a saint for this.
TheWatchingEye This drawing is focused only on that piece of armour, if you’re doing a full character with a full set of armour you can simplify it a little bit and work pretty much the same amount, unless you really want it to be super high res and then yeah you have to stick to that.
The whole time I was watching the video, I thought - damn, this guy makes it quite detailed, Blizzard artists (who draw big metal armor all the time) don't make it nearly as intricately detailed. What you really need to sell metal is that shiny reflection line of the main light source, some little nooks and crannies, and correct shadow areas. If there's a light source like fire you ofc will have to render it too, maybe a rim lighting line, but that it. Everything else - mirrored reflections of nearby objects, ambient light reflections etc - is just way too detailed for a non-main poster kind of image.
I have never seen someone who can create an art tutorial that is 50 minutes long but has just the right amount information needed to create such a great effect! Also it's in real time and not just a timelapse ❣
@@Gammatrap also, I would like to ask about the difference in gold and metal like this one, is it just the colors or do i need to pay attention to something more?
You are very quickly becoming my favourite art channel. I often find people with your skill level don't fully explain their thought process behind their strokes. And as someone who considers herself a mid tier artist, this is sooooo helpful.
I found this VERY VERY helpful !!! I loved the fact that there wasn't distracting music. You just TALKED and truly EDUCATED us ! Many many thanks. As well, you're cute ! lol

i mean this as a compliment but your voice is genuinely so relaxing i was finally able to fall asleep for the first time this week- and like a good restful sleep- i havent been able to sleep for the past few days, like i havent had such trouble sleeping since this summer but when i out this on like around 20 minutes in i just,, knocked out for a good hour or so and god i feel so refreshed now- obviously im going to go back to actually study from this video now but thank you so much :") you dont talk super fast, the environment is nice and quiet with the little asmr-y drawing noises in the back, it's such a relaxing video i love it so much- i know it wasnt intended as a sleep aid but god does it work well as one
Yes this is a long video but you legit have the best teaching style I've ever seen for painting. I've always had a good grasp of art but not with painting which has always been nothing but sorcery to me. I thank you for your tutorials. I finally have an understanding of how to actually build shapes with paint and bring them to life. Not to mention I learned much more about metals. Seriously thank you for your work.
I absolutely love your videos because, I can't explain why, but somehow every time you explain something or I see your process of work, something just clicks and I understand it. I usually struggle with any kind of "tutorial-like" content, so I have to figure things out myself often, but your videos just explain it all in such a way that i completely understand it to the point I can actually use the methods you explain in my own kind of "style". Just wanted to show some appreciation :)

This is the best tutorial I've found on painting stylized metal so far. It felt almost therapeutic to just watch you paint the metal. Personally my go-to is water droplets and still water in general. I love drawing the reflections. (So this is right up my ally.) I keep a (by now very large document) of helpful art tutorials to use when giving advice to other artists. And this video is going to definitely be in there. Not only do you very clearly explain your technique of drawing metal. But you also explain why you draw the metal the way you do, why it works that way.
