@@MarcoMeatball While Chinese is the original language of the animation. The Japanese dub is far more emotional sounding from the vocal artists, and it really does add another dimension to the music.
@@nyrahl593 true, but the japanese dub also loses a line (it happens quite a lot) and that single line changed so much in terms of context.
Veliona's " Do you want to die? " It made more sense as to why she pulled Seele off with that line alone, and it also helps understanding her character more.
@@nyrahl593 I disagree with that take to be honest. Japanese is easier to listen to and get the emotion from, but the Chinese is also excellent. It's just harder to hear emotion in a tonal language, because tone is one of the primary ways we hear emotion, and when tone of voice is also used to convey meaning in words, it can be more subtle. The more you listen to Chinese, the more you'll find the emotion in the voices.

In Honkai Star Rail, Seele tells Bronya that her name was given by Oleg and in old Belebogian language, Seele meant soul.
The thing with Seele is that both her and her other self are very much polar opposites. Normal Seele is a kind, caring sweetheart who is very much not a fighter, but is a very nurturing type of individual. The other Seele, known as Veliona to the Honkai community, is much more vicious, cruel and vengeful, and up until this point, the two have been completely discordant. Her light ego doesn't want to acknowledge her darker ego, and her darker ego is very much exasperated by this and even has to force her way to the forefront on occasion to keep her "host" alive.
This cutscene marks the first time where Seele was desperate enough, due to her love for Bronya, that she finally turned to Veliona and asked her for help, which is what Veliona has been waiting for all this time, fusing their desire to nurture and protect with the will to fight and power to back it up. It's a serious turning point for her character, and makes Seele a very unique character, as the two halves come to terms with each other, and grow to accept and even love each other and cherish each other's company, even if one of them is much more honest about it than the other (Veliona can't ever just own up to her feelings). This is why Seele's one of my favourite characters in the franchise.

@@Clubqaz3 It kind of is and it kind of isn't. There's two sides of her personality. The name Veliona comes from the skill descriptions of Stygian Nymph battlesuit, which says that Seele's bright side (Ego) is called Saule and her dark side (Id) is called Veliona.

The characters here are named "Bronya" and well... "Seele". And in the German language, Seele means soul and Bronya means armor. The lines "Dreams can be real, when a soul is armored in steel" is a reference to the relationship of the two of them and I just love it XD

Dual Ego is, imo, the most underrated vocal song/cinematic in the game. Wasn't even played at any of the concerts, feels bad man.
Love how you said it's about determination, gathering the strength and courage to throw oneself towards whatever challenges await.
Seele is one of the very few naive and almost impossibly kind, compasionate and wholesome characters in the story. Her journey is to bloom like a flower (flower symbolism is a very reoccuring thing, as it's even seen in the cinematic) into someone who can protect others, much like how so many protected her.

I think some songs aren't played due to either political or personal reasons (by the singer).
Rubia can't be sang by the original singer because CN is...CN. First concert used kids to sing it, second did an instrumental instead.
Dual Ego...I don't know, but I attribute this to personal reasons, because of the above example.

Rubia can be sang by Zhou Shen but dude is a massive star/singer in China with hundreds of OSTs to his name.
He is so busy that he literally works/sings nearly every week of the year, rarely gets to rest between transits.
The reason why Zhou Shen can't make it for Honkai's concert was that he was doing CCTV's mid-autumn Festival gala - a National-level event, a variety show (CN Version of Running Man), two concerts & a massive Douyin 2 hr+ long online concert that hit 140 mil+ views (in which he did sing Rubia).
Sa Ding Ding (The OG singer of Dual-ego) is much the same, along with Laure Shang (Befall) etc. , their schedules are packed a year in-advance
As for Ayanga, the reason why he missed the Hoyoverse concert was he was taking part in E-Pop of China and too busy starring in a movie (In search of Lost Time), as well as taking in the Mid-Autumn Festival Gala (He sings a duet with Sa Ding Ding, Laure Shang is also taking part too).

LETS GOOO Steele’s crescendo of a soundtrack is just- Ugh excuse my French but it’s a total eargasm.
The fact that you were able to get the premise of that particular part of the game without having played the game just from the music shows your deep understanding of how music can tell stories. It also shows how the team that made the soundtrack was very successful at telling said story.
And just a small fun fact since you recently did a reaction to it, this part came a few chapters before Shattered Samsara (the part with Rubia). I'm sure you'll be reacting to more Honkai Impact music and I'm excited to see it in the near future.
Bravo. Totally accurate analysis as usual Marco. Seele has a duality inherent into herself. She is the carrier of a Honkai Stigma, so she develop a "dual entity" very stronger growing inside her. Anyway. The emotions analaysis that cutscene and song reflects are very accurate.

Yeah, Duo ego's song and the animation is by far the most separate one. Personally this cutscene is my fav one because I'm biased towards Seele but I do have to tell you that without context nothing here makes sense lol. Without spoiling but giving a little bit of context. Seele broke through dimension and jump straight back into hell to save her "very best friend".

I can already tell you it's not going to be great. Moon Halo is the most context relient song Mihoyo ever made. The instrumental is quite simple and all the effort was put into lyrics.

You are correct, Veliona is another soul. She is not Seele's split personality, she is incarnation of Stigma( DNA catalyst ). That stigma inherit by Seele, thus Veliona has similar appearance to her now.
A little context if you're interested: Seele spent most of her life as a timid (in her own words) coward that always needed someone (Bronya) to save and protect her. She knew she had this darker half (sometimes named Veliona by the fans but canonically just also called Seele) but was terrified of her and wouldn't use her help willingly. Seele had been lost in this other dimension for a very, very long time (far more years by Seele's perspective than passed in the real world), which is why Bronya, as the rescue attempt was failing, chose to send Seele back to freedom and take her place rather than both of them remain stuck. Seele, however, wanted to be together with Bronya again far more than she wanted to be free, so this end was unacceptable. So much so that she finally found her own courage and for the first time called out to her dark inner strength to save someone she loves.

thats the first time ive heard someone pronounce Seele like that, and honestly, thats a lot closer than other pronunciations ive heard.

Not Honkai related, but seeing how you're able to pick up premises from the songs you react to there's one song I'd love to see you check. It's called "From a Place of Love/ Love Town battle theme" from the game 'Library of Ruina'. It's a song that can be misunderstood if you just vibe with it and without game context.

Just a comment to push this, Library of Ruina has a lot of good themes. And to hell with it, Mili makes a lot of great video game music too (Limbus Company, Ender Lilies, even Deemo and Cytus), Marco should definitely check them out!
Ok, so as usual you were impressively accurate about the song.
However, the way you pronounced Seele (perfectly correct) made me unreasonably happy. There are a bunch of german words and names in honkai and I've pretty much been getting used to hearing those pronounced completely wrong.

Some context for what is happening in the cutscene. Bronya and Seele grew up in the same orphanage. Unfortunately for them this wasn't a normal orphanage - rather, a lab that experimented on children with high Honkai energy adaptability. During one of the experiments Seele disappeared into the Sea of Quanta (basically - space between universes). Since then Bronya was determined to find and rescue her. Finally an opportunity presented itself, and Bronya entered the Sea of Quanta (I'm grossly oversimplifying what actually happened, but that's the gist of it). However, getting out wasn't quite as easy. It didn't help that prior to this cutscene Bronya had a series of exhausting battles. That's why they had so much trouble escaping, which prompted Bronya to sacrifice herself to allow Seele escape. Speaking of prior battles - the Cyberangel cutscene happens in the same story arc prior to this one. It's one of my favorites, and a great candidate for analysis. You've heard the song already during the concert, so you know how good it is.
Seele has had the other personality for quite a while, but hasn't told anyone about it. I guess it's not something you would share, even with friends. The "other Seele" (often referred to as Velliona by the community) is seemingly the opposite of Seele. While Seele is timid and shy Velliona is edgy and aggressive. She is also fiercely loyal to her host, despite trying not to show it.
Fun fact - Seele's full name is Seele Vollerei, which can be roughly translated as "soul devourer". And she uses a scythe as her weapon. The symbolism is not subtle in the slightest.
Not gonna lie, I watch reaction video mostly as an excuse to rewatch these amazing cinematics, but your breakdowns of the music in Honkai definitely adds another layer to my understanding and enjoyment of the material. Thank you.

Seele was one of the first animations that I saw online and I think at that let my rabbit hole into honkai. Great job, keep up the good work.
Serious question because this keeps coming up. Why the strong opinions vs CH or JP dub? I personally do not have a problem or a preference. These animations are the only “anime” I have ever watched besides neon genesis evangelion and studio Ghibli movies.
I don’t care either way which dub I watch personally. But I am trying to understand why it matters to some folks! Thanks!

because some don't understand that difference in performance in terms of delivery of lines doesn't necessarily mean one is "better" over the other and some want to push others to use which one is "superior" in their opinion instead of just letting people listen to what they want :T
(I find it rude that some are saying things like the CN is "rough" "hard on the ears" "has less emotion/no emotion" in comments of various streams I've watched; emphasizing SOME though since there have been others who prefer JP being polite about it, just talking about some that seem to be a bit too pushy about it :/)

Free-to-play games have come a *long* way from where they started if they can have music this hype AND a nice art style. Never played the game, but I’m kinda tempted to if this is what I have to look forward to.
Also, I don’t know if you’ll ever see this, or if you’ll ever do it, because no one talks about this game anymore. But I would absolutely love it if you discussed In Your Belief from Asura’s Wrath. It’s such a beautiful main theme for a game about the angriest, and best dad in video game history.
Some more context for this song, this cutscene happens almost right after Cyberangel (which is Bronya's main OST) where she saves Seele/Veliona and then its Seele's turn to save Bronya which is what happens in this cutscene.
Yup and small thing, that move that Seele does is an actual ingame move it’s her Ult
For a little more clarity you might want to read the Azure Waters manga. It tells you who the 'other me' is and her relationship with Seele. Bravo! Well done! nailed it in 28 seconds!
I was just rewatching your videos, what great timing. Great video as always.
There are some small missing detail in the English sub: Seele called Bronya as either jiejie in CN or Onee-chan (they are orphanage sisters, not real sisters, but their relationship is actually closer than sisters)
Side suggest, since you are an Opera Singer and currently listening to some Mihoyo musics: There are some songs from the game Houkai Gakuen 2, which is one of Mihoyo old games: Lyin/See You in the Next World (1:58 as OST only version or 2:05 as animated version, This song was reused in HI3) and Incarnation (4:15 as full song version,2:15 as animated version, Jhana/Jyahnar character song)
I consider those 2 songs are hidden gems of Mihoyo, The events in HG2 are not related to HI3 as well as the game stopped to publish to global (only China and Japan servers) so those animations are not really spoiler anything.

One thing I love about these animated shorts is how accurate they reflect the actual gameplay experience in the game. If you play the game you would know the badassness of the dark Seele when unleashed. It's like in the old days people would make mecha anime to sell robot toys but in Hoyo's case it's a gacha game.

I LOVE Honkai's music so much. I hope you're able to listen to some of the OST that isn't tied to cinematics or PVs as well because some of the best, most emotional music plays during in-game moments and just adds SO SO SO much to the whole experience.

My favorite song of all the Honkai 3rd songs to date, mainly becouse i can listen to it without bursting into tears unlike most other songs of this game.
As for Seele, she has someone live inside the Stigma(the big red emblem on her chest) who became something like her total oppisite over the years, Velonia, is cruel and sadistic yet totally devoted to protecting Seele, sometimes even against her will.
The animation is for a big part of about her accepting the power of the Stigma, something she always avoided till now.
I think this song is so interesting due to the fact how different it sounds. It is sung by a very talented sopranist Sa Dingding which I would never guess until I noticed her name. You don't do movie stuff on the chanell but in your free time, honestly recommended because her voice is something else. Especially song Upwards to the Moon.

I know you mostly have vg music on the slate, but I'd like to see your reaction to the songs for One Piece: Film Red, sung by Ado for one of the characters in the movie. The songs are great on their own, but Ado's voice has such an incredible versatility. The grit she can muster for a rock song produces some dark tones, then she'll make you cry on a ballad.
If you decide to look into it, I suggest "Tot Musica" and "The World's Continuation / 世界のつづき." Both have really nice music video's on her channel, too (if you just search "Ado" with the song name.

this is the trailer that got me into Honkai Impact, BEFALL showed me the direction due to Genshin Impact connections with the Unknown Goddess and stuff.. but this trailer is what got me.

Seele is a Character with an interesting Character arc involving her dual personality. The Community calls the one with the black and Red Dress Veliona. And she is basically her evil part, but further into the story we get to see them work as one. To protect there loved one.
It's not an evil part just more violent and with Seele best interest in mind by any means

I wouldn't call Velliona "evil". She certainly tries to portray herself as such by acting edgy, but she doesn't actually do anything particularly evil. When she unleashes her fury the targets are usually immediate threats like Honkai beasts or Herrschers. When she took revenge on the kids who bullied Seele at the orphanage it amounted to basically a mean-spirited prank.
She isn't evil. Those who answered before me told almost everything, but I'll add that she also enjoys fighting, which could be considered as a "yandere" trait, and they are usually evil. But if you look at how she interacts with Seele and everyone around her, you can tell that she is much more of a "tsundere" than a "yandere". But her personality is much better written and more complex to fit into the single trope it is based on.
As for why she wants everyone to see her as evil, I have no idea.
@@ArachisNPO Well, I have an idea why she might act all edgy and vicious - it's probably not something she consciously wants to do but rather a trait that is related to what she really is. What I'm about to say isn't yet confirmed (although it's very heavily hinted at). So consider it both a spoiler and an unconfirmed theory.
Whenever someone in the Honkai universe acquires a second personality (especially someone who already has high Honkai adaptability) it usually means one thing - they are about to become a herrscher. Velliona could hear Herrscher of Dominance's voice talking to her while Seele couldn't, and HoD tried to persuade her to join her by claiming that Velliona is very similar to her. There was already an example of a confirmed Herrscher who was unaware of being a Herrscher (Senti), so Velliona probably doesn't realize what she is (and HoD's hints are too subtle for her). Plus, Seele looks just like the Herrscher of Death from the Previous Era. Her weapon of choice and the meaning of her full name ("soul devourer" or something to that extent) also fit the theme of a grim reaper.
So what I'm trying to say is that Velliona's nature pushes her towards evil, yet she has enough restraint to resist it, and her edgy behavior is the result.
