    got recommended this random video, it's very good!
    I have on of the very slightly more odd collecting hobbies, I collect bottle caps. To me, the sense of satisfaction comes from a number of things: 1) as you point out, the sentimental value, they're like small little mementos of times and places. If I go to a new country and drink something, the cap remains and is a memory of the time in this little physical object. 2) I think it's just satisfying to amass stuff, as crude and dumb as that is. I like seeing my collection expand, a testament to how much I've managed to explore and so on.
    Bottle caps are one of those fun collecting hobbies that manage to avoid the main excesses of consumerism that you note in this video. Firstly, bottle caps are kind of worth nothing, even rare caps are worth very little. Secondly, you can't really pre-order caps, or buy them like designer clothing on ebay; the interest is really in the discovery of the cap in a store or something.
    Anyways, just thought I'd share my personal thing. This was a great video and made me think about why I collect what I even collect! Good job man.

      Thank you! I appreciate the comment! This kind of collecting is pure and safe from all the bullshit 🎉
      Plus, if there is ever an apocalypse, you'll be considered rich!

    I collect Scout and Guide badges and there is three people you see online.
    1) People who have the badges for stuff they have earnt/been to
    2) Vintage collectors
    3) Completionists (aka I want the whole set from an event)
    I have seen certain sets sold for £500 ( the full set of subcamp badges from the last jamboree for example), I get insane over badges... but there are so many scalpers, I saw someone sell I badge I swapped (worth around £1) for £5. and yeh,,, there was only 19 of us swapping them but its not worth that much...

      It's so bizarre to me that it affects collecting communities even on a smaller scale 🫠

    • @goldstarsforall
      @goldstarsforall 18 дней назад +1

      @@Lessuno Yeh, I think for everyone with a collection in a thing, there are people with the disposable income that they are willing to part with... Some of the scalpers are ruthless tho... especially for 'rare' badges (aka only three Icelandic people went to the jamboree last year so their badge is super rare, Irish neckers (scouts thing) are practically impossible because they have to earn it and they only get one).... if it gets into the hands of a reseller a lot of the fun is lost

    • @Lessuno
      @Lessuno  18 дней назад

      @goldstarsforall If that badge is sold, it loses all of its original value, in my opinion. The value is in earning it.

    This was a wonderfully made video. I’ve collected action figures for a while but the last few years I’ve dialed back significantly for most of the reasons you’ve mentioned. It’s a consumption/capitalism self feeding circle and loses its sentimentality and personal gratification. It stops becoming the hobby of collecting and becoming the hobby of buying.
