I had a '77 as my first car, baby blue, rust so bad your prisoners could escape the trunk through the holes in the quarter panels, got it for $200, and was totally bummed when I realized it was FWD. Fortunately, it was so long that it would drift around the corners on dirt roads like it was RWD. Still have the hood emblem and 8 track player...good times...

I work at a Cadillac dealer and we have a 76 Eldorado Convertible BiCentenial Edition. The crazy thing is that it only has 128 miles. Yes. 128 miles on a 43 year old car. Inanity.

To be fair European roads are so tight and windy that the sports feel is almost essential to avoid accidents. I do not understand why Americans felt the need to copy us and get rid of their huge cars, most of your roads are just miles of straight lines.
Southern USA and Western have long wide roads. In Massachusetts (north eastern U.S.) has super narrow roads that are falling apart lmao

There is a lot of the US that has narrow winding roads. The problem is that American sports cars are all about that quarter mile and then our luxury brands are trying to be BMW and we no longer have luxury vehicles, besides the SUVs. If I wanted a BMW I would buy one. If I want a Cadillac I would like to get a Cadillac not something that is trying to be an uglier BMW.

8.2 liter engine making only 190 hp, slow, doesn't handle, difficult to park, gets 9 mpg. But I still want one!! pity I live in the UK where that's almost impossible LOL.

The "only" 190hp figure is nonsensical and has to do with how SAE reworked their rating methods between 1971-72. The (actual) engine performance itself did not change, ok. Compare any car's/engine's figures for those two years and take notice. For the El Dorado with 8.2l, it went from 365hp and 535lb-ft torque (0-60 9.2s) to 235hp and 385lb-ft torque (0-60 9.7s). Is there really any "emissions or design change" that could explain -135hp dropping out of thin air? Yeah, our cars get so much better fuel economy with only xxxhp! Silly to think a 4,900lb car could do 0-60 in ~9sec with "only" a 235hp, later 195hp engine. This more had to do with the politics of the day, with the reasoning of "emissions". Yeah, our cars get so much better fuel economy with only xxxhp! *Hint: We don't measure horsepower with those methods in today's cars/engines, either ;-)

@@ryanreinhart1834 The bumpers on these cars are mounted on shocks, they move if you hit something. The gap between the body and bumper was filled with a plastic cover. Back in the day the plastic got brittle and broke up. Now a days the plastic has UV and mineral additives that makes them last longer, so they don't break up. Remember these are 15mph bumpers...back then bumpers were designed to take an impact and not damage the car. pull the bumper back out and off you go like nothing happened.
I so much agree on the journalism pushing the car industry into forced sportiness. And I think consumers reaction is suv. Most of us find sporty cars uncomfortable and inconvenient. The only cars left who are not sport cars are SUV’s, but automotive journalist are dead set on ruining that as well. Sport package for my Jeep? NO!

I drive a 76 Eldo semi-regularly in Montana winters. Good snow tires on the front make this thing a tank. The 9mpg is extremely optimistic btw
9 mpg is optimistic? How much do you usually get? I thought my w126 Mercedes was bad at 13 mpg. Also, with that single digit mpg, how big is the gas tank on the Eldorado?

@@jacobbelcher3512 Not nearly big enough. From E I usually get 24 to 25 gallons in and there should be a couple gallons left in there by that point as well. So more than 25, less than 30 I'd say.
My big GM cars get better mileage than my Fords do. My 73 Mark IV has never gotten above 11mpg highway where my 75 Electra 225 sedan gets 14 to 15. In town, the Lincolns get 6 to 7.
Still, nothing drives like the old Lincolns. They're the true sensory deprivation tanks of the era... and loads of style to boot
Yup. Saw many of these plowing through Canadian winters like there wasn't even snow on the ground. HUGE cast iron block on a HUGE steel chassis over BIG tires.....can't get any better than that. Plus you have steering ability with your drive wheels so understeer in snow is petty much non-existent.
I'll also add that I don't drive my other 60s and 70s cars in the winter unless it's bone dry, no snow. It's just my Eldorado isn't as nice as the Lincolns, Buicks, or other caddy I have.
No joke, the fwd Eldorado with snow tires is damn near as good on road as my new outback. Though the Subaru would spank it with proper snow tires on unplowed surfaces

This is definitely your best video ever.... Most of your videos are humorous or goofy, but this one actually delivers a message that IMO needs to be addressed. American luxury is dying and your explanation for why is spot on. I never quite thought of it, but the distraction with sporty road feel has certainly distracted US car companies. I drive an LS460, but would much prefer to own the Lincoln or Caddy version.. Too bad one doesn't exist. I guess as long as original condition or restored oldies like this are around we can still enjoy true American luxury.
Cadillac needs to get back to their luxury car roots ,and stop trying to make everything sporty.
Cadillac did exactly that when they introduced the CT6. A beautiful flagship car in my opinion. But of course it was cancelled, because...GM! Cadillac wants to be the first name one thinks of when the conversation turns to "crossovers." I'm anxious to see how that works out for them.
@@zephead843 The CT6 was more of a BMW 7 Series than a modernised Fleetwood. They should make a new Fleetwood, and they could use the same chassis as the Escalade.

Dude, you totally nailed what I've been saying to my fellow automotive journalists for 20 years. Maybe another generation will get it. Or maybe not. :). Thanks for a great video. I'll have to bring my 79 Olds 98 out to you for a test drive. I nice blend of traditional American luxury with surprisingly good road manners and acceleration. The first of the GM downsized full-size sedans, it was a remarkable good car (along with its other B and C body stablemates from Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and Pontiac).
When I was in high school, these are the cars we all bought. Mostly 70's and 80's cadillac's from older couples. You could find a nice 70/80's cadillac for a couple grand in the early 2000's with low enough miles to last several years. Plus we all grew up watching italian gangster movies, so we all thought we were bad asses.

Well.....eventually the thing nickeled & dimed me to death. It turned out 2b the worst (overpriced) pos I ever had! Almost everything on it was either fixed or replaced. In 2015 I ditched it & got a new FORD.

@@ekscalybur The THM425 longitudinal transaxle was in 400hp Toronados and pre-emissions Eldorados in the late 60s, plus all the internals (other than the ENORMOUS CHAIN that lets it turn around under the engine) are shared with the regular and indestructible TurboHydramatic 400 used in nearly every GM car from the mid sixties to the 80s.
So yeah, I think it could take at least 500hp. #IworkforGM

That same transaxle was used in the GMC motorhome. They still have a cult following, think 26 foot motorhome with a low chassis and flat floor because the entire drivetrain is up front.

I had a 72 Coupe Deville with a 472. I advanced the cam timing one full tooth, flipped the air cleaner lid, dialed in some extra ignition advance, and I could then boil one of the back tires all the way through first gear and halfway through second. I got 11-12 MPG except for the time I took my grandma for a ride and drove easy, then I got 18 MPG. That 500 only needs a dialed in camshaft and you will find double digit mileage and about 250 or so HP. You likely already have 200 from the exhaust system modification.
My mom owned one of these when I was growing up. Oh the memories of a 5 ft tall chain smoker throwing that thing around the West Virginia back roads. Us kids would just wander out that boat of a car.

I was wondering that too, it may be low, or it may be extremely overloaded. It’s hard to find a thick white wall these days and what’s on there may not have the load rating to carry that 500 cubic inch V8 and transaxle. May be a ticking time bomb either way

This is so spot on when i describe why I still drive my 1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Convertible. Have a convertible and had a sedan, 2 door and a four door coupe in the past as well.

I love watching 70s-80s movies with car chases and cop cars etc. All that sliding and nose lift and roll when they drifted fast corner.
When I played with hot wheels and majorette and matchbox, that was my favourite thing. Pressing on their suspension to get that body roll and lean on high speed chases.
Fast forward, cars like that are still my favourite to drive in GTAV.

Being someone from Europe I always wondered why cars in the States needed steering wheels. They should be optional extras.
My first car (hand-me-down) was a 79 Lincoln Mark V, so basically I learned to drive on cars from this era. Despite the substantial hood, one thing that you never had a problem with was finding the boundaries of the car.
Other observations:
1. Those seats are gorgeous and that leather looks to be in fantastic condition.
2. Hate what they did to the exhaust.
3. Is not the modern day equivalent of this the Genesis G90/Lexus ES?
Back before roll over crash protection was a concern, as such the pillars hardly obscured the view. However if you could manage to roll the thing, you are really doing something wrong. Also, the bodies are mostly level from front to back so you can actually see the fender tips.
Yea, I like the sound of a V8 as much as the next guy, but sitting inside that car, you shouldn't be able to hear the motor at all, it wasn't to uncommon to grind the starter gears from trying to start a running car.
Mr 'rents had a '72 Caddy Sedan de Ville, and it wasn't as nice as this but it was very pleasant to drive. Drove my mom from NJ to FL once, and it was fatigue-free. Love those seats in yours!

I agree 100%. I want comfort, space & luxury from a car - not a super high, top speed and rock-hard suspension in a compact, bland blob shape such as Audi A4, A6 & A8. I also agree that the blame lies 95% with motoring journalists, convincing us that anything other than speed and handling was irrelevant. I love the old land yachts, they have so much style, sure it's now dated, but in their day, they were miles ahead of our boring compact European cars.
Couldn’t possibly agree with you more. Automotive magazines generally hire young bucks that think everything has to get to 60 mph in just a few seconds and handle like a race car. That great handling compromises comfort, something that advanced technology has yet to prove otherwise. These cars were truly comfortable, as if though you’re traveling to your destination while driving your living room. I’d rather have one of these land yachts over just about ANYTHING produced today. The Eldorado has a presence that simply can’t be beat, and is only matched by the Lincoln Continentals of the same era. Despite today’s impressive technology, these cars were all around more luxurious than all but a few cars being built today. And while Cadillac certainly builds some decent cars today, they simply don’t compare to those from the 70’s and 80’s. In fact, I’d have to say that the 76 and 77 Eldorado represent Cadillac’s best cars they’ve ever produced for production purposes. And while Caddy has been building some immensely impressive prototypes, they haven’t made it to production. However, between the Eldorado and the Lincoln Continental MK V, I’ll take the Lincoln unless the Eldorado happens to be a Convertible.

Very astute observations. Reminds me of my experience with my 1973 Mercury Montego MX Brougham. I miss that car for all the things you mentioned. It was a little shorter (17.5 feet) and had a more horsepower but it floated like a dream. I drove it from Rhode Island to Ohio with 34k original miles. Good memories.

Love those things. My dad had a '77 Biarritz. If he floored it from a stop the front end would lift up like a boat. I remember he had all this meat in the trunk that he had bought and the air compressor for the suspension couldn't handle it, turns out there is a valve under the hood and you can hook up a regular tire hose to it and fill it up. I just remember the looks of people while I stood there putting air into the engine compartment. Ah good times.
Lincoln got it and starts to go back into real luxury ! Look at the Navigator and Continental and the next Aviator, Cadillac should take note

In America cars like these fit the roads perfectly. Last time I was there I rented a Chevrolet suburban which felt fantastic over there. After that I testdrove one in Sweden and it was really bad. Nothing wrong with the car itself, it's just that it's built for American roads, and not the roads we have over here.
I had one just like it a few years ago. Floats down the road. Drove off a curb once missing the driveway thing and the car just wiggled. Amazing ride.
The pulling ability of these 1966 to ‘78 GM FWD units is amazing!
The Eldorado & Toronado can easily pull themselves through bad road conditions so much better than most vehicles.
I knew a couple with a steep unpaved driveway, a truck and a ‘73 Eldorado- on really rainy days the truck had to stay in the street because it would just slip & slide, the Eldorado easily drove up to the garage!
In Australia we had both the Holden Statesman and the Ford Fairlane as our home grown luxury cars. Both were based on wagon floor of their respective normal cars for that added size.
It was a sad day when Ford dropped the Fairlane, although the Statesman lasted nearly to the end of Holdens Australian manufacturing.
I had a late 90s Fairlane and it was an awesome car. You didn’t steer it as opposed to adjusting the wind in it sails.

My daily is a '93 Fairlane, like riding on a squishy, slow, vaguely steerable cloud.
Mine was a 95 NF. Just a slug 6 on gas, but man it was comfy. I do miss it.
@ Mr Lurch...In 1976, we also had the luxury, Australian built Chrysler by Chrysler, available as a stretched wheelbase sedan and as a luxury coupe that was not available in the GM Holden Statesman nor the Ford Fairlane.

I had a '75 Eldo Convert in high school. They are large cars. Like you, I'm quite tall and was amazed that I could lay down inside the trunk - at a slight angle I could fit! Well, now you've got something to try!

TheCorvetteBen I do for the most part, except when he bashes Cadillac for going sporty. I daily drive a manual 2009 Cadillac CTS and I love it, I get that the old cars were way more comfortable (and they were) but the sportiness for the new ones are too much fun for me to go back to a plush, slower, heavier car. Dropping it a gear or two on the highway and flooring it to get up to 100 feels like it takes the car no power, plus their very cheap now, and if I wanted the plush and slow smooth shifts I would buy a Hyundai Equuis

Jamie Pomfret personally I would, the Cadillac name has lots more power than a Pontiac. Plus the design and features are some of those you wouldn’t get in a Pontiac or other Chevy (most times) plus telling people your going to pick them up in a Cadillac is always fun when your 17. Plus they’re extremely affordable used. I got mine with 188k miles that still looks brand new for $5500 with all new (cheap) tires. I replaced the engine because of a bad timing chain and light rod knock (I’m assuming the owner never changed the oil because when we bought it there was about 2 out of the 7.2 quarts in the oil pan) but since then it’s been going strong and pretty reliable for 200k miles now
Totally agree. I love the BIG front seat with NO center console. A Suburban has a huge center console and fairly small seats. Give a big bench seat in luxury cars with a dash or column mounted shift lever. Quit trying to make sports cars out of everything. I want my real luxury back. Great video and superb purchase!

1976 Cadillac Eldorado Hardtop Coupe, Just beautiful, I love it.
My Great Aunt always drove Cadillacs, and this very model (same colors and everything) is the first one I remember her having. She bought it new. My Great Uncle had a 1968 Coupe DeVille in Baroque Gold with a black leather interior that I'd kill for now, except for its environmentally catastrophic mileage haha. Love that ride, Tyler!
Theres a company that sells Cadillac performance parts for the 500 and the 472. Changing the heads to ones with oversized valves works very well, as well as the cam. Their website has tons of info on all the things that work very well to make power on these engines. These engines were choked from the factory and it doesnt take much to get those ponies back under the hood. Cad500parts.com
Those engines were choked to death on pollution controls which didn’t even work very well. They were low compression engines that are just waiting for a good tuner to pull all that burdensome crap off, increase the compression, and wake these cars up with some serious power. However, if I planned to use it as a daily driver, would personally pull the entire drivetrain out and replace it with a much more modern, high compression engine that makes serious power and is connected to an 8 or 10 speed transmission. Then I’d add in backup camera and a Navigation system. Lastly, I’d dump the crappy stereo that came with these cars and replace it with something much better sounding.

My first boss after college had a ‘79 Eldorado Biarritz in mauve. For reasons I can never understand he let me drive it. It was awesome, and the polar opposite of my Chevette.

There was a company that replaced the engine on a e-type, left the gearbox, clutch and everything else as it were. Kinda sacrilege unless the engine is shot but still a cool concept, drives pretty much the same but also sounds like shit

They are the best! My first car was a 1975 Oldsmobiles Toronado. I've owned a 72 Caddie Fleetwood, and currently drive a 75 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe. If you can afford the fuel, and upkeep, there's nothing like them. Go get you one.
I know. The closest thing I have to one right now is a 1972 Pontiac Ventura II. Another contender is my 1985 w126 Mercedes, but that thing actually handles very well. It has very comfy power bucket seats with power headrests and no bolstering, and four wheel independent suspension. It is very comfy on the highway and is very forgiving on big bumps, but it does not have much body roll. The only way it can even be a contender for a land yacht is its length at 203 inches, and its 13 mpg.

Y'know, I can't speak for the "land yacht" community, but from my view, I would say the MB would be the considered a land yacht just because of how much smaller cars were in the 80's. Your Pontiac (nice) was probably consider to be a mid-sized car back in the 70's. That's just my opinion.
@@Chris_Troxler Compared to today's cars, my Pontiac is the same size as many mid-size, or even some full-size cars. But it was actually considered a compact car, not even mid-sized. From the outside it is not compact, but it sure is on the inside. I am 6' 3" and I have the seat all the way back, and my knees are close to the dashboard. Even though it is all the way back, it still leaves some room for rear passengers as long as they are no taller than 5' 8".
I own the great in between. A 1986 Mercedes 300e. Fast, reliable, big, fun, quiet, and has super springy seats

My wife and I just acquired one these. It was her dad’s favorite car. He passed away a few years ago and her mom just passed away. My wife is taking the car as part of her inheritance. It’s a 76’ convertible, black paint, red interior and white top. I have to admit , it’s pretty cool. Now, I just have to find some place to keep it. It’s huge! Hey Hoovie, if your interested, I have a 1967 Cadillac Fleetwood limo we have to sell. It also belonged to her dad.

When I was 5 my parents got a brand new 1968 Pontiac Catalina station wagon- was a weird metallic green color, had a 400 and whatever cubic inch V8, 1 finger GM power steering, AC that would make icecicles, 3 rows of seats (ALL benches(or couches))... 11 years later I learned to drive in that car- I LOVED it!! Maybe not luxury- but it just had a certain feel that NO new car today has...

Sheehy there are aftermarket heads and ways to avoid ever even coming close to doing that. A good 330 horse is all it really needs and I’m sure he could do that without starving the engine of oil.
Sheehy has obviously never owned a 472 or 500ci Cadillac engine. Starve of oil.. OKAY. We used to fill these fucking things with concrete and run them in demo Derby's and they'd still run forever.
Plus a simple rocker shaft upgrade fixes your over exaggerated "oil starvation" issue. Which isn't the issue at all. It's weak factory design was prone to wearing the bushings and causing minor ticking sounds. Fixed probably a dozen of these engines with new rocker shafts and rockers, no more ticking.
@@Sheehy223 No. It'll do just fine. They were only choked due to emissions regulations. All V8s of the late 70s sucked for that reason. Miles of vacuum lines in those beasts.

Which is funny since I'm guessing that 1970 version got 9 mpg as well, if not more. Those were beautiful cars, and 'smaller'.
Call it 300, there was an industrywide dropoff in 1971 because the SAE changed the test to give more realistic numbers, with no actual power loss at that point.
They never really made the power they should relative to the displacement. Decent amount of low end torque but not much else. But it's also kind of a terrible engine design, they have severe oil circulation issues and if you want to make any real power with one it'll blow up pretty quickly.

You hit the nail on the head about luxury cars Tyler! I have a 2009 mustang with a v6 and black stripes and its quick enough for me. I always tell people i have NEVER lost a race. Because I never race the damn thing! I would love a car that floats down the road, but the 9 mpg would be a deal breaker.

Not just GM, Ford as well. I called to take my F150 in and the service adviser said "is the check engine light on"? I said "it's a ford, of course it's on. It was on when I bought it and will be on for the next 10 years". She wasn't amused. (they hate the truth).

GREAT video and great comments all true. Recently I saw another individual who reviews cars and raved about Rolls Royce including the model I have the Silver Spur. He said the steering wheel,has to be moved substantially before it responds but thats not what the car is about. Then he reviews the 89 Caddy which responds the same way(several inches each way) and called it ridiculous. But having a sporty feel is not what Caddys were about in the 80s either. I also owned the Fleetwood before I was able to afford myself a Rolls and I bought the Brougham because it was SO MUCH like a Rolls Silver Spur.

Please dont electric swap that thing Hoovie! It would just be wasted on a big beautiful barge like that. Try unlocking the potential of that 500ci engine. Pull the emissions crap off, put in some modern high flowing cats, put in a properly sized carb (or even go fuel injection), maybe even throw in a cam and watch that thing cruise down the interstate better than it ever has before.
That's more like it! As a former owner of one of these old Cads I also got a little shook when he said "tesla swap". Cringe. Millennial crap pop music cars and classy luxury don't mix. It would be nice though to see this Caddy with more power, as even I can recall these things are rather unpleasant to highway merge with.

It would be easier and cheaper to modify the current engine. But an electric swap would be cool. More torque, even quieter, smoother. But more difficult
I mean, with current tech and engineering, you could probably get 3-5 more mpg outta that thing and an additional 200-300 more horsepower just rebuilding the engine and exhaust with newer, more efficient parts. Nothing super hi tech, just old style tech built with new techniques and materials.
