Being a Rush fan has always been like being part of a secret group. Sure, other people know the group exists, but no one understands how great things are inside the club doors. I've been a Rush fan 40 years. a life long fan, and the son of a life long fan. Many great memories between the old man and I are centered around this band. I'm sure for many of us club members, Rush is more than just the baddest rock trio ever.
I threw out all of my Rush stuff three days ago ! I finally get every weird word Peart is putting forward as his message .What comes back is that it,s a negative message deep down .Please forgive me but Open your eyes and ears !
@@markdemell8056 OK..... Exactly what combination of fucked up shit are you on???? Just want to know so if I completely lose my mind sometime in the future, I don't do that combination and go down the fucked up rabbit hole you seem to have ventured in.
counterparts is one of my favorite albums..I liked test for echoes as well that came right after as I recall but counterparts is one of their best its so difficult to even choose...Great song. Never missed a Rush concert. Its ashame Neil retired...But he's been through alot.
I was insanely obsessed with Rush when I was a kid (like 20 years ago). It was Neil Peart's lyrics that inspired me to start writing poetry. Haven't stopped.
One of my absolute favorites. Neil always had a message in every song. Real men gain power through the women in their lives, and the love they share. It's not weakness to be vulnerable and show compassion to the people you care about.
NP said it's not about men and women. It's about the Carl Jungeon (sp?) theory of the duality of man. The counterparts in all of us. Masculine and feminine in men and women both. However, we all interpret lyrics differently and yours sounds nice!
It's deeper than that. What Neil is saying is that he has a feminine aspect inside himself. This is Jungian Psychology at it's best. Carl Jung, an eminent Psychologist brought about the concepts of the Anima (feminine aspects in men, the "soul") and Animus (masculine aspects in women, the "spirit"). Neil was tacking Neural Science back in 1987 with Hemispheres. You better bet he studied Psychology, dude.
Peart really dominates this one; so powerful. Just listening to this again right now has got me really wanting a Rush gig here in Scotland for their R40 tour. Fingers crossed!
This has apparently been part of their set for the first few American shows, which is good. The downside is that Alex Lifeson has confirmed that this will be their last major tour, mainly due to the fact that Neil is now suffering from tendonitis, which is only made worse by playing night after night..after night. The North American tour finishes in august, I can only hope that we might see a show in Scotland before the end of the year, or even just in London. I'd travel 400 miles south to see the last UK Rush gig. That's assuming, of course that the London ticket creamers don't get there first, and resell them at a 4x - 10x markup....:/ The best tickets should always go to the real fans; the ones who will sing out. Pah!
Really? Well I wish I had seen them, they were in town not long ago. But at leastI get to say I saw them. Their time machine tour was awesome. Got to hear them play all of moving pictures
You know, I became a Rush fan when my father first introduced me to them. Ever since, I've been a massive fan. I was heartbroken when I heard about what happened to Neil, but I am glad to know that he will live on through his music, and his legendary status will always burn as bright as the stars in the sky. But image my surprise when I found this song. I have been a Rush fan for many years now, and was sure I had heard them all. But oddly, I somehow missed this one. It is utterly fantastic. It's perhaps one of my new favorite songs they do. It's like a small gift from beyond. A last gift from one of my musical heroes. Miss ya Neil. And thanks.
It was in Poland in 1993 i was 16 my brother Darek came from the army and give me the tape saying check this band it is a Canadian Rock the album was Caunterparts ,sins then i know Rush and now i do live in Canada :)
Not a huge Neil Peart fan but this is prime time great--one of the best drum intros in history and the fill back from the bridge at 4:42 is pure legend.
I've had an absolute BLAST listening to these lyric videos throughout the night. A simple "thanks" seems a little petty, but please take it as the ultimate form of praise! :)
quite possibly the best bass guitar tone I have ever heard..geddy no doubt at his best..long live Canadian rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!ROCK ON CANADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fucking exquisite. The drums, the bass, the guitar, the keyboard, the vocals all masterfully blended and executed to perfection, the ultimate gestalt. If there were a human analogue to the Triforce it would be Rush.
For those who don't know, Animate totally feeds off the Counterparts principle of interdependence for complete functionality. The song implicitly refers to the concepts of the eminent Psychologist Carl Jung, a student of Freud who broke away from his school of Psychoanalysis to go solo. He brought the notion of the "collective unconscious" in which we all share a archetypical psychic impression of essentially all that ever "went down" in human history. However, most pertinent to this song is his "Anima" and "Animus" concepts. The anima is feminine (soul), animus, masculine (spirit). The assertion is that people need both of these elements in them to be complete humans, whether a woman or man.
4:43 as '..gently dominate' quietly fades, Neil proceeds to puncture the silence by OBLITERATING his toms with a drum fill. I'm sure the juxtaposition was intentional, and makes me smile every time :)
Truly excellent! Thank you for your efforts. I have offered this to friends to help them understand the depth of the lyrics. Your channel is incredible!
Wow, this is such a great intro like song of one of their heaviest albums of the early nineties. This songs sounds like a choking engine of a Cadillac...
+ChevKen I'm with you man, only it was my mom. And it wasn't this song, it was "No one at the bridge" from Caress of Steel. So I know how these songs can make you relive painful periods of your life. Don't fight your memories, rather use the song as a tool to help put that period in perspective. And it's okay to cry. Christ, if there was ever a moment when it's okay to dwell on a memory and let your guard down, it's this very moment! Is it possible for a song to serve any nobler purpose than to remind you of your dad? I don't think so...
You have my sympathies. My father passed away 2 years ago and I am so glad I got to take him to a Rush concert. We saw the Test For Echo tour and man what an amazing time we had! His favorite part was the drum solo, because he also played the drums. My brother, his son and myself also play the drums so at the funeral we placed a pair of Neil Peart 747 drumsticks that we all played with in his hands. And I had my dad autograph my snare drum before he passed. I have since retired that snare, a memento I shall always cherish.
The one thing a man should look for in a woman, is someone who can make them a better person, and vice versa. Not that everyone is corrupt, but there's always room for improvement. You should find a life partner who always brings out the good in you, and inspires you to do great things. That's love. someone who, changes you, for lack of a better term, for the greater good. Real love is built on trust, the willingness to do things you've never done (within boundaries I.E. cold fire), and even the willingness to put yourself on the line to help your partner. Real love is being there for someone in their absolute darkest hour, and knowing when they're down, without even needed to hear a word. Real love is simply loving someone more than yourself. Idk, it's late, I'm rambling XD
I just had the experience of listening to this song for the first time. This video is the second. I needed somewhere to register and share this experience. For it to resist time a little more. Damn... This is song fucking awesome
I believe this song is about the aspects of a "masculine" and "feminine" nature, and how men who can show their feminine side without shame tend to be more relatable and "complete", showing that the balance of these mindsets is important for one's understanding. A good message for the obnoxious macho men who believe that showing their "feminine" side would be damaging to their psyche and reputation.
Colonel Zaraki I agree, IMO, the song is about the Yungian anima/animus archetypes. Anima is the feminine part of the male psyche, Animus is the male part of the female psyche. Animate Me, talking about the Anima residing inside of all men.
fierrote I think Spirit of the Radio is their essential song, not only because of its popularity, but of how it summarizes their career and mindset to an extent as well.

This is one of the most underrated Rush songs of all time, but it's an amazing track on an underrated album.
In my opinion Counterparts was one of their best.

i agree. the really old stuff like 2112, counter parts, test for echoes are among my favs. Best live concert ever. Tightest band ever!
I think the word "underrated" is a very underrated word. Great sentence dude!
Peart is on the record as saying it's one of his favorites. He loves the way it's arranged and I have to agree. Very underrated gem of their catalog.
I was insanely obsessed with Rush when I was a kid (like 20 years ago). It was Neil Peart's lyrics that inspired me to start writing poetry. Haven't stopped.
River Laurie read the books of Neil, it's inpirational. Ghostrider, and masked rider. Great drummer, and great writer.
I had to go through a lot of emotional maturity to truly appreciate RUSH.
River Laurie 🤓 Neil is my hero.
I thought Getty was the lyric writer.......or for most of their songs anyway. GREAT band!😁😌😉😄😀😊☺😁😂😄😃
