Aurora has fallen in love with who she assumes is a peasant boy despite being betrothed to a prince, not realizing that said prince *is* the peasant boy she fell in love with. Meanwhile, Phillip has fallen in love with and intends to marry someone who he assumes is a peasant girl despite being betrothed to a princess, not realizing that said princess is the peasant girl. Phillip is willing to give up his crown and throne to marry the peasant girl, but would he really be losing it if the peasant girl just so happens to also be the very princess he was betrothed to? It kinda cancels out giving up his crown, throne, and titles. Meanwhile, me being the chaotic $h!t that I am, I'm enjoying every single second of this. I lose nothing, and I gain everything.

This part of the movie does bring up a interesting point: that the two kings Stefan and Hubert expect their kids to go through an arranged marriage, yet Phillip says she met someone earlier who was living somewhere in the forest earlier Phillip believes her to a peasant. Now granted, Phillip didn't know at the time that the "peasant" was actually Princess Aurora in disguise, but he doesn't seem to care much about *who* this young lovely lady was as long as Phillip wanted to marry for love rather than being part of the plan to succeed their elders.

Technically, Philip wouldn't have lost the crown and kingdom. The 'peasant girl' would've simply moved up in the world to become a Queen. It happened in western history several times.

In modern royalty, that would be the case. But in the middle ages, royalty was considered divine and marrying a peasant would be seen as defiling royal blood. Also, the reason Philip is betrothed to Aurora is for political union, not love. King Hubert is worried because Philip choosing the peasant means there will be no new dynasty and therefore no new kingdom.
