I love how the 1975 looks like they're punk rock... but this sound is a cross between James Taylor and Phil Collins. Truly at their very best.
Very apt observation. The clash of genres and aesthetics definitely keeps them unpredictable and compelling. Often feels like a very clever repurposing of styles you recognize from elsewhere, but still entirely original in its own right.
Also add U2. The 1975 are among the greatest rock and roll bands of all time.
