I'm laying on my couch, at my parent's house, late at night when everyone is asleep - like I used to do so many times when I was a middle schooler and later a teenager. I'm 26 now and live elsewhere, but I'm visiting my parent's right now. I don't know why I felt the urge to listen to this music tonight, but I'm glad I did. This brings back so many memories and feelings... and not all of them good. It makes me remember all that pain and hurt, frustration and confusion that I used to feel so strongly during those years. But more than that it makes me feel that sense of love underneath it all, like that song "Totally" really meant something to me. I really totally wanted to hang out with the girl next door but thought I was too much of a loser for her. And "every night" I would come home and beat myself up in my head for acting like a fool around her. Things didn't exactly go the way I hoped they would but this music captured the spirit of something for me. Like, despite all the BS there was always a loving warmth there. And this music brought it out in me. It did then and it did tonight.
I'm always searching, to this day, for some sort of conclusion or answer but I guess I've started accepting these last few years that maybe there ain't one. And you know what, that's OK. I guess I didn't love SW and this music because they got it right all the time, and did things perfectly, and they were role models to look up into in that sense. Nah. I loved them because they just did their thing. Just like me as a teenager, even though my thing at that time was so damn screwed up (maybe for all of us). And here I am still doing it. I know it's only been a few years, but damn, I just have to think that some things will never change. And the way this music makes me feel, you'll just never be able to take that away from me. And I don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow, but in the words of one of my favorite composers, "I'm just happy to be alive".
Thanks SW and thanks uploader for this.

This was the album release show for Anthem For A New Tomorrow. It also introduced a lot of people to 88 Fingers Louie, who opened the show. Most venues at the time weren't too keen on crowd surfing and especially stage diving, and this venue never hosted punk shows, hence the overzealous security. Funny that Ben's singing about fucked up power trips just as the guy jumps in the crowd. It happened a lot at the Metro too.

Beautiful. I always thought these guys were like, hateful or something. I mean, I loved them, but they didn't have that same innocent charm that The Queers had for me. They were darker. A few years ago there was some story where Ben Weasel decked a chick in the audience, too (not really sure what happened or why). IDK. I always just thought they were kind of dark. And they are, especially compared to The Queers (for example), but that's not the essence of it. There's a lot a lot of hope in these songs:
"Stop acting like she's stupid! Cus Cindy's on methadone". It's a song of empowerment and acceptance. "Veronica's definition of love is hate, Veronica hates me!" It's a love song about a dysfunctional love, but it's love! "To you love is just a game and googly eyed teen romance, that's why I don't wanna be in love with you!" He's not necessarily against love, he's just against that fake phony shit. "Shut up, shut up, shuuttt up!!!" (Hey Suburbia) It's an outcry against the bullshit rules that this society has placed on us.
IDK. I guess I knew on some level that there was hope and love in these songs, but I was so caught up in my own hate and angst that I guess it was easier to pay attention to the ugliness in it all (it's there, for sure it's there). But that ugliness is not the root of it... there is great love in this music.
I was born in '91, discovered these guys in high school around 2008 or so. So I'm not an original with all this stuff, I was just a baby. But the music, the authenticity... it always spoke to me.
    Thanks Screeching Weasel.

He didn't really hit her; two girls were throwing ice at ben talking trash and screaming for attention, he lunged towards them and punched towards them but held back as not to actually do any damage. People think "pop punk" means commercial "punk" like Sum 41 and Simple Plan and stuff. That is sort of the common definition But I think Chris Cocktailz is referring to the fact that this is melodic, pop-sensible punk rock - or rather, pop punk. By that definition the Ramones would be the quintessential pop punk band, and SW would not be far behind. Although it is the common definition, pop punk need not be commercial / Fall Out Boy. In fact I would call this (SW) pop punk. That other stuff is more like, pop that just happened to be influenced by punk. And guys like SW blazed the way for bands like blink-182 and Green Day to actually have commercial success with a similar sound... and from there the floodgates opened and arguably the true spirit got lost in the commercialization.

Also... security depends upon which place you play at. Some have none, and some have too much. None was always good with me.

I love the fact that they didn't play an encore. I always thought it was pretentious as shit. "Oh we're gonna leave now oh wait sike!". Like F off and finish off your setlist ya geeks!

Never heard something so stupid. As a musician myself I always love when people yell for an encore. It shows you that they like you and you got to play more
