    Have you found a cache with one of these puzzles before? Would love to hear about it.

    Pin nailers are the best invention every. They shorten the build time by so much! The parchment paper was a brilliant idea. I need to remember that! Great explanation of how a reed switch works. I was thinking the same thing as Wilhelm Jensen, placing one piece down [permanently might help to ensure the magnets are in the same spot each time. I have a gadget cache that uses a reed switch but the reed switch would stay closed sometimes after the magnet was removed. I added a diode in parallel with the read switch which solved the problem. Not sure why this works but it was it was recommended to me by someone who knows electronics better than I. Great video! I have always wanted to make a cache like this but had not thought it out, so glad to see this clever cache being made!

    I attempted to make a very similar cache last year based on a video game called "Talos Principal" only I had one big issue. The puzzle had more than one solution and placing the magnets in a way that could accept multiple correct solutions hurt my brain. In your case there are fewer possible solutions (8, based on the starting orientation and weather the pieces started right side up or upside down.). One method I considered as a fix is to permanently fix one piece to the game board reducing the possible alternate solutions. That should also work for your puzzle as the pieces are cut more organically. Another solution I considered was to paint or etch a pattern in the edge of the board and in the game pieces so once completed correctly the image was revealed and you can be sure of the solution. Also, one addition I made to reduce the possibilities was to drill a hole and glue a small dowel to serve as a handle to lift the piece out. This also prevented cachers from flipping a piece upside down.

      Those are all great suggestions. I think I may put a piece of vinyl cut in one of the shapes so they put that one there and can go from there. Love all the suggestions. Thank you.

    the only problem i can see is if a cacher is like me and has very strong neodemium magnets in his cache kit... I could see someone using 1 or 2 magnets strong enough to generate a magnetic field that would activate all the switches. once they see th emagnets on the puzzle pieces they mighth figure the mechanism out. or maybe im over thinking it... either way VERY cool build! about to watch part 2 to see how you finish it up!

    What glue do you use to attach the magnets to wood?

      The best thing is to make sure it is a tight fit and use silicone.

    I am attempting to add reed switches to my project in a smilar manner but its not working. any tips?

      Make sure what type of reed switch you have. If you have a multimeter test when you get a current when you place the battery to it. Then if you are doing puzzle pieces you need to make sure the magnets line up just right with the reed switches. I hope that helps.

    There's a small problem with your puzzle. It can be assembled in several ways and it can be rotated 90 degrees four times. Maybe you need to attach one of the pieces so that there is only one solution.

    • @BehindtheCache
      @BehindtheCache  3 года назад +2

      True but if you want it to be harder you don’t have to do that. It will only light up if you get the correct configuration. But you are correct. I may draw how the first piece goes. Thank you for your comment.
