The Smashing Pumpkins, formed in 1988 in Chicago, Illinois, by frontman Billy Corgan and guitarist James Iha, rose to fame with their breakthrough album "Siamese Dream" in 1993, solidifying their place in the alternative rock scene. Known for their diverse sound that blends elements of rock, psychedelia, and electronic music, the band's critical and commercial success peaked with their 1995 double album "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Despite numerous lineup changes over the years, Billy Corgan has remained the consistent driving force behind the band.
Their song "1979," released as a single on January 23, 1996, is one of their most iconic tracks. Reflecting Billy Corgan's teenage years and a sense of melancholy and nostalgia, "1979" became a commercial success, reaching number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was recorded quickly and almost didn't make it onto the album, with Corgan reportedly finishing the lyrics just before recording the vocals. The accompanying music video, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, depicts suburban teenage life and became iconic in its own right. "1979" remains a fan favorite and a staple in the band's live performances, and it is considered one of the defining songs of the 1990s alternative rock era.
