In February 2023, I underwent an L5-S1 surgery. Prior to the surgery, I had a conversation with my doctor about how the remaining wound on the disc would be managed post blade incision. The doctor assured me it would heal within 14 days. I had read that natural tears on discs often heal on their own due to their small size, but surgical wounds might be larger, raising the possibility of re-herniation.
I took great care not to lift any heavy weights and refrained from work for a total of 60 days after the surgery. However, even after 4 months, I started experiencing shooting pain in my leg, ankle, buttock, and my back posture had also altered. Unfortunately, the surgery also introduced a new issue - numbness in my feet. This entire experience has led me to the realization that I may have made a wrong decision by opting for surgery. It feels disheartening to have spent money on this procedure and consumed so many medicines, only to find out through a recent MRI that there's a new herniation on the same disc.
Due to these circumstances, I've decided not to return to the same doctor. I've lost faith in the scientific evidence behind this procedure, as it seems the doctor never disclosed key aspects, such as what a laminectomy involves, the duration of medication use, the formation of scar tissue, or the potential loss of muscle strength in the insertion area over time. The doctor's assurance made the surgery seem straightforward and uncomplicated, but it appears there might have been past cases of unsuccessful outcomes that were kept hidden from me.
Since returning to India from abroad, I've turned to natural Ayurvedic treatments for relief. This includes methods like hot oil therapy, hot baths, hot water treatments, and the use of natural herbs. I'm experiencing some improvement, but I must admit that I'm still grappling with lingering fear and mental strain.
This entire surgical experience has put me in a difficult situation. I want to emphasize to anyone considering lumbar surgery to thoroughly ponder the potential for failure and the subsequent steps that might be needed. Please don't rush into a decision without considering all the aspects and potential outcomes. Your body's well-being is too important to treat as a mere learning experience, as I've unfortunately learned firsthand."

It is probably a damaged annulus. Disc replacement is best in that case.

Hi Baksteen, I’m here with you. You are a strong soul and you need to know, unfortunately, weeks is not enough to recover. Even months! It would be frustrating beyond compare to have a third herniation but keep resting and being active together.
I myself, right now, am wondering if I have reherniated from my surgery almost two months ago. It is terrifying.
Do you have employment insurance at all in the mean time?

      @Scott Murray hi Scott.
Thank you for you message, I'm feeling alot better.
It's been one hell of a ride, went in for a back operation, ended up having 2 in a space of 2 weeks, and had an aneurysm 2 weeks later.
Ended up in icu fighting for my life , I thought I was gone .
Lost 7 pints of blood and they cud not find the source of the bleeding, had 7 doctors working on me and eventually they found the problem after several blood transfusions.
5 operations later and I'm on the mend, I hav lost 21 kgs .
I am just glad to be alive ....
Feeling very weak , but getting better every day.
They are looking into long term medication to neutralize my stomach acid , bcoz I over stress and worry about everything all the time, they have me on a medication in the interim but will see tge specialist again in 1 month
Will start going back to work on Tuesday, will spend afew hours at the office , physio for my back should start on Tuesday
I initially thought it was medications, but it was a combination of stress, anxiety mixed with the operations ...
I thought I was not gona see my girls again ...
After 4 days of CT scans, x rYs, 3 operations, they eventually located the bleed ....
It would bleed and then stop , then start again, each time they scanned me it had stopped ...
Eventually the surgeon told can he has to just cut me open and manually turn the tap off bciz they can't just keep giving me blood ....
1 hour before the final operation 2 surgeons and 5 doctors had a meeting and said wait ✋️, let's go through the main arteries into the stomach and check ...
They went through my left arm into my neck , down into my stomach and the main artery would bleed and stop , then bleed and stop....
Was a horrible Horrible experience, thelights start going off and nobody knows wats happening .
I just wanted to see my girls one last time.
The surgeon promised me he wud get me back to my girls ....
      Unbelievable Zimbabwean Vascular Surgeon
According to discovery he is one the best in the country ,and the strange thing is he was 2 years older than me ....
U knw u getting old wen 5 of the 7 doctors are your age
Icu was a very very scary place bcoz you are reliant on everybody for everything and some of the nurses treat you like a number.
