    A deeply strange and unsettling story from Hugh Walpole, first published in 1929. I hope you enjoy. I am going to be out of action for about a week but will be back with more short story audio soon. Cheers.

    Very intriguing story, beautifully read as always. I both enjoyed and found myself frustrated by the ambiguity surrounding what Uncle Robert might have been up to. The whole dynamic of the household reminded me a bit of M.R. James's "Lost Hearts"... except that Uncle Robert's motives are left much murkier than those of the dastardly Mr. Abney, and Bob Armstrong and Uncle Constance ultimately prove to be more effective guardians than the clueless servants in James's tale.

    Not one for werewolf stories, but this one got to me. It ran much deeper than a horror story, as you have pointed out. What a phenomenal writer Walpole is, and loved your telling of this startling tale, thank you!
    You might want to look up Tom Fool, the last ever court jester who lived at Muncaster Castle (as mentioned in this story).
    Tom Fool became the close confidante of the king of Muncaster Castle and was pretty evil. There are two portraits of him (unknown for someone so lowly to have a portrait made in those days) which are said to be haunted.

    I was truly startled by the 'oddness' of that story, and had immediately to research Hugh Walpole, who, just because l'd got this view in my head of him, l hadn't bothered to check out how... I don't know... anguished the man himself was, Uncle Constance and all. I think you represented Constance very reasonably! I think there's a lot to know, other than him being gay, about Walpole. Brilliantly read, as all of us very grateful fans always want to tell you, Jasper. 👍

    • @EnCryptedHorror
      @EnCryptedHorror  2 года назад +1

      Yes, Walpole is a fascinating (if slightly forgotten) figure. One of those people who seemed to cross paths with all the other famous figures of his time. I think his writing on what it's like to be a "different" child is very strong here.

I'm dying to hear someone (hint hint Jasper) narrate "A Different Morecambe"....which is so disturbing I honestly haven't listened to it for awhile. @@violetfemme411 I have delayed responding to your comments first off to revisit "A Different Morecombe" again. I will say you should seek out a story called "The Lost Boy Found" by Terry Lamsley if you are not aware of it from his collection DARK MATTERS. It is a masterpiece of this style that Walpole and Unsworth envoke gone even further.. As far as I know there is no audio version alas. I have mentioned Lamsley on this channel before and sincerely think him for a brief period and a handful of tales one of the best purveyors of this type of fictions. Thank you for you replies.

    I wondered about your weather, It's like Wisconsin or Minnesota in America. I used to live Up There, now at 73 I have a Senior Apartment in San Francisco which is Cold but Never Frozen. I asked Google Why is England always cold?
    Why does the UK have terrible weather?
    Northern Ireland and the west of Scotland are the most exposed to the maritime polar air mass which brings cool moist air; the east of Scotland and north-east England are more exposed to the continental polar air mass which brings cold dry air.
    With a strong polar vortex, the jet stream (air current) becomes stronger, causing stormy and wet weather. A weaker polar vortex often leaves room for winds to hit the UK from elsewhere - northerly and easterly winds are common.

    Ha! With this all-male household, one uncle feminine, washing and feeding another, with a large manly servant who creeps into bed with the boy to comfort him, I was expecting more homosexual undertones, with dear dirty uncle turning out to be a vampire at least. Instead we get Wotan and Loki, a Wagneran story so strongly heterosexual as to quiet all such undertones. A good writer explores many dimensions!
