  • Test driving some of Derwent's charcoal pigments: pan paints, tinted charcoal pencils, and charcoal sticks in three shades. I am crazy about Derwent colours and I couldn't resist trying these as I work in a lot of ancient churches and ruins and would like to up my stonework game.
    I bought mine from Bromley's Art Supplies here in the UK:

    Kelly! I cannot tell you how EXTREMELY HAPPY I was to find your videos...and immediately subscribed! Since I was young, I had a love for paper...the feeling of different textures, crinkle sound...always felt weird to describe to others. I feel understood and my soul is happy to find your page. Thank you!

    I have the Derwent Tinted Charcoal paint palette set, and I enjoy them a lot. They’re wonderful for subtle, misty effects, giving a kind of aged, vintage look. I also like to pop the blocks out of the pans, dampen them and mark direct on the paper with the wet charcoal. Work fast, and it can then be smudged, scratched, or otherwise manipulated with a cloth, paper towel, brush, pencil or stylus. With all the tinted charcoals, apply them wet, and they are permanent. There’s no dusting off or additional smudging, and if not too thick, there will be little to no transfer even in a closed book, even without a sealant (I use casein, if I seal my paintings at all). It’s a very limited and muted palette, but I like that. Even with a single color, you can vary density and dilution and get a lot of variation.

      Hi Jen, thanks for getting in touch and comparing notes. Casein for a sealer, eh? Going to look that up although like you I rarely seal my charcoal and pastels if they have been smudged and/or activated with water. That technique for using the pans by taking them out of the pans - that sounds amazing and I am going to give it a try in about five minutes. Thanks, again! Kelly

      @@BookandPaperArts Have fun with them!
      Re casein, I do a lot of wet and dry application with charcoal, pastel, and graphite. Dusting and transfer usually isn't a problem, but sometimes it will be. I refuse absolutely to use Krylon sealant. It's way too flammable, and I need most of my brain cells, thanks. So I looked up what artists did before we got all these aerosol solvents and petroleum by-products, and it all came back to good old milk-extract casein. I even saw a demonstration of how 19th century artists would stretch sketch paper or fabric (canvas or linen) on stretchers and then fix their charcoal drawings by painting casein on the back of the paper or fabric and letting it soak through to adhere to the charcoal. I thought that was really interesting. Anyway, I use casein for fixing/sealing and for layering between different water media, like layering diluted inks over watercolor washes.

      @@reginaeid1568 You can get casein from any art supplier. There are several brands. Right now, I'm using the Degas brand of spray casein fixative from SpectraFix. If you want to make your own, there are plenty of demos on RUclips for how to cook skim milk to extract the casein. It's pretty easy, though maybe not cost effective if you'll be using a lot of it. (You could make casein fixative and your own homemade ricotta cheese at the same time.) Frankly, you don't really have to extract the casein at all, but it is a lot less smelly than just fixing drawings with straight milk.

    Thanks for treating us to three new videos this week, each one informative and inspirational! I adore the effects you get with these charcoal goodies but, like pastels, I really lack the confidence to use them as much as I’d like. Look forward to future videos to see them in action! 😊🥰❤️

      Hi Sandra. Three videos. I don't know what came over me! As for confidence to use your supplies well, this won't do at all. Like pastels these things last for ages so just get out some scrap paper - I sometimes work on the back of paper pieces that didn't turn out great (you know the kind I mean😺) but I hate to waste them so I turn them over and hey, presto, space to practice and rehearse just for fun. Try it and keep me posted.

    I have a set of the Derwent Tinted Charcoal pencils and I love them! I've discovered that if one uses a lighter hand when drawing/mark making the colour becomes more evident in the mountain blue, peat, lavender and moss. I also have one called Elderberry which is a lovely blue.

    There's something about the tinted charcoal pans that just doesn't agree with me. I feel like I have to scrub a lot to get a decent amount of paint and I end up fearing for my brushes, lol. Love the pencils and blocks, though.

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  Месяц назад +2

      You are not mistaken. It's not that they are a threat to the brushes so much as it is just a much lighter palette than I expected. I also have their graphite-tinted pan paints and found the same. Also, they dry so so so quickly that yeah, that could make for some messy brush stuff. The cool thing is I liked the little sticks the best and they were only about £1.45 ($1.75) each. Win win win!
