Alina is my favorite ballerina. The Nutcracker that she stars in is my favorite. there are a lot of good ballerinas, but there's just something about her that I love. Wonderful job Alina!!! 🙌
I belong to old school, but I embrace her technique. Alina should continue perfecting her own style. With time these extensions will be accepted and those who do not have them will look outdated.
Um...pretty sure high legs and hyperextension is what most of us aim for. I'm yet to meet a dancer that wouldn't be happy to have Alina legs! The crap people give her is uncalled for.
@chainedserendipity- I noticed that, too. Her left leg seems to do it more. It seems to be happening because she's throwing up her working leg too high.
I have to say that I actually love these extreme extensions, BUT only when they serve the story! I like how these extensions make these ballerinas more swan-like. Or when they use it when they have to reflect they are in pain, happiness etc. Just throwing your leg up to show how flexible you are(for example in the pas de deux of Don Quichot) and how amazing your technique can be is a total 'turn off' though.
in most variations i see her in i don't really care for her but in this she was stunning. I know a lot of people who study ballet would say that her extensions "weren't really ballet it was gymnastics" or "they were too far up" or "they look distorted" but i've watched many different versions of this variation and I think that's where the extension ought to be! It's so ethereal and magical that i find it more beautiful than if the extension was where is was really supposed to be! :)
This clip demonstrates the down side of natural flexibility---you really have to work to maintain your center. Would much rather a lower extension and a sense that the ballerina is raising and lowering leg at will rather than that leg is just doing what it wants. I've also seen Makarova (favorite for anything was always Martine van Hamel, though), and agree that she was an artist---if she flubbed or did nothing fancy with the Black Swan, you didn't really care, she was so beautiful.
Perhaps appreciating a young ballerina that continues to grow is a more healthy prospective than criticizing so mercilessly. I am assuming that all those that have offered their "kind words" are principals in the greatest ballet companies in the world. No principal dancer is perfect and, hopefully, with time and growth, they continue to become better artists. RUclips has provided an outlet for frustrated would-be's and never-been's.
havenization I noticed that too. I’m afraid it’s a lack of muscle strength 😕 If you are not born with perfect ballet 🩰 hips that allow a great turnout, you have to work extra hard on your muscles to get a good turnout. On pointe or on relevé you need even more strength to keep that turnout, and then it becomes noticeable Alina looks very skinny here, I hope she is healthy and it’s not a nutritional issue 😐
A great dancer keeps her audience's attention on her face and the way her WHOLE body moves. Focusing on her legs and feet detracts from the emotions I'm supposed to feel because I'm bored. Anyone can have extensions, but not anyone can master true artistry.
Hyperextension in the legs isn't always easily controllable... my friend has naturally hyper extended knees, and she can't straighten her legs without hyper extending them. It just doesn't work. It's either bent knees or hyper extended ones.
just to compare watch Margot Fonteyn - Odette's Variation 1967 - its amazing with modest hight all of a suddenly it is musical in time a dance of joy and why not Odette has hope now she has met her prince who might save her ! definitely musicality is sacrificed for these ridiculously high legs I just don't think it is dancing any more
@theamazingsoter @theamazingsoter I agree. I was watching the videos someone has posted of her as a student. She surely shows lots of talent and expression then. But it seems like she was promoted to principle too early or something. She lacks a sort of hard earned control and maturity that I don't think can really be achieved when those roles are awarded too early because you ingrain some bad habits as you perform the roles.
@j2y8n2x Exactly. I feel Obraztsova has so much life when she dances. She's so effervescent. Alina always looks like she's just going through the motion to me. I've tried to like her, I really have, but in my opinion the most she should be is a coryphee and that's pushing it. She completely lacks the life and presence that should come from a principal dancer. Obraztsova clearly has that.
@MomoHasMuffins I'm no dancer, but I can jump in. She hyperextends her legs in that she brings them nearly vertical. If you watch other ballerinas performing this variation, you'll see that almost none lift their leg to that extent. Personally, I cannot stand watching Somova. I actually find it almost offensive.
I see she's got a perfect hyperextended ballet body with long arms but I don't see any personality in her dancing. If dancers like that are made principals at Mariinsky I'll rather go to the circus than to ballet in the future.
@huixue It is a little like (but not as bad) as those teachers that have their 10-11 year olds do variation from Petipa ballets on pointe. Even if the kids are talented and expressive, they don't have the maturity for the role so it just isn't impressive to anyone except those who like prodigies who can do "tricks."
I don't detest big extensions, but it doesn't work for the character of Odette. She is suppose to be weak, so she can't get her leg like this. Sometimes it looks like ballerinas forget that their legs tell the story too.
I've seen her as Kitri in Don Quixote. not really impressed because I was actually expecting more. but she's really good in a more slow, mellow like dancing like this but not in an up tempo, energetic Kitri role.
Her arms are easily distractible... Here they look almost unhealthly thin and long. Yes, i admit this perf was lacking in something, essence... Dancers are humans too. Alina's port de bras IMO is exceptional. So fluid and expressive...
it's so cool how all you guys commenting are either ballerinas or have something to do with the art :D can anybody explain what a hyper-extended whatever is? :) pleeeeze
