    I belong to old school, but I embrace her technique. Alina should continue perfecting her own style. With time these extensions will be accepted and those who do not have them will look outdated.

    @chainedserendipity- I noticed that, too. Her left leg seems to do it more. It seems to be happening because she's throwing up her working leg too high.

  • @0Angelfromheaven0
    @0Angelfromheaven0 12 лет назад +2

    I have to say that I actually love these extreme extensions, BUT only when they serve the story! I like how these extensions make these ballerinas more swan-like. Or when they use it when they have to reflect they are in pain, happiness etc. Just throwing your leg up to show how flexible you are(for example in the pas de deux of Don Quichot) and how amazing your technique can be is a total 'turn off' though.

  • @loulie1997
    @loulie1997 13 лет назад

    in most variations i see her in i don't really care for her but in this she was stunning. I know a lot of people who study ballet would say that her extensions "weren't really ballet it was gymnastics" or "they were too far up" or "they look distorted" but i've watched many different versions of this variation and I think that's where the extension ought to be! It's so ethereal and magical that i find it more beautiful than if the extension was where is was really supposed to be! :)

  • @minissa2009
    @minissa2009 10 лет назад +13

    This clip demonstrates the down side of natural flexibility---you really have to work to maintain your center. Would much rather a lower extension and a sense that the ballerina is raising and lowering leg at will rather than that leg is just doing what it wants. I've also seen Makarova (favorite for anything was always Martine van Hamel, though), and agree that she was an artist---if she flubbed or did nothing fancy with the Black Swan, you didn't really care, she was so beautiful.

  • @LeSonge
    @LeSonge 13 лет назад +1

    Perhaps appreciating a young ballerina that continues to grow is a more healthy prospective than criticizing so mercilessly. I am assuming that all those that have offered their "kind words" are principals in the greatest ballet companies in the world. No principal dancer is perfect and, hopefully, with time and growth, they continue to become better artists. RUclips has provided an outlet for frustrated would-be's and never-been's.

    What is an hiperextension for ballerina if she can't tell a story with her dance?

  • @havenization
    @havenization 13 лет назад +3

    her standing leg is ALWAYS TURNED IN when she does anything in 2nd position , even her fuettes . .. is this the new technique ?

    • @mathildewesendonck7225
      @mathildewesendonck7225 4 года назад +3

      havenization
      I noticed that too. I’m afraid it’s a lack of muscle strength 😕 If you are not born with perfect ballet 🩰 hips that allow a great turnout, you have to work extra hard on your muscles to get a good turnout. On pointe or on relevé you need even more strength to keep that turnout, and then it becomes noticeable
      Alina looks very skinny here, I hope she is healthy and it’s not a nutritional issue 😐

  • @marisugu7966
    @marisugu7966 12 лет назад +2

    A great dancer keeps her audience's attention on her face and the way her WHOLE body moves. Focusing on her legs and feet detracts from the emotions I'm supposed to feel because I'm bored. Anyone can have extensions, but not anyone can master true artistry.

  • @xxJodelleFerlandxx
    @xxJodelleFerlandxx 13 лет назад +2

    Hyperextension in the legs isn't always easily controllable... my friend has naturally hyper extended knees, and she can't straighten her legs without hyper extending them. It just doesn't work. It's either bent knees or hyper extended ones.

    just to compare watch Margot Fonteyn - Odette's Variation 1967 - its amazing with modest hight all of a suddenly it is musical in time a dance of joy and why not Odette has hope now she has met her prince who might save her ! definitely musicality is sacrificed for these ridiculously high legs I just don't think it is dancing any more

    @theamazingsoter @theamazingsoter I agree. I was watching the videos someone has posted of her as a student. She surely shows lots of talent and expression then. But it seems like she was promoted to principle too early or something. She lacks a sort of hard earned control and maturity that I don't think can really be achieved when those roles are awarded too early because you ingrain some bad habits as you perform the roles.

    @j2y8n2x Exactly. I feel Obraztsova has so much life when she dances. She's so effervescent. Alina always looks like she's just going through the motion to me. I've tried to like her, I really have, but in my opinion the most she should be is a coryphee and that's pushing it. She completely lacks the life and presence that should come from a principal dancer. Obraztsova clearly has that.

    @MomoHasMuffins I'm no dancer, but I can jump in. She hyperextends her legs in that she brings them nearly vertical. If you watch other ballerinas performing this variation, you'll see that almost none lift their leg to that extent. Personally, I cannot stand watching Somova. I actually find it almost offensive.

    I see she's got a perfect hyperextended ballet body with long arms but I don't see any personality in her dancing. If dancers like that are made principals at Mariinsky I'll rather go to the circus than to ballet in the future.

  • @huixue4411
    @huixue4411 13 лет назад +3

    @huixue It is a little like (but not as bad) as those teachers that have their 10-11 year olds do variation from Petipa ballets on pointe. Even if the kids are talented and expressive, they don't have the maturity for the role so it just isn't impressive to anyone except those who like prodigies who can do "tricks."

    I don't detest big extensions, but it doesn't work for the character of Odette. She is suppose to be weak, so she can't get her leg like this. Sometimes it looks like ballerinas forget that their legs tell the story too.

  • @TheChaiTeaLatte

    I've seen her as Kitri in Don Quixote. not really impressed because I was actually expecting more. but she's really good in a more slow, mellow like dancing like this but not in an up tempo, energetic Kitri role.

      If Balanchine had cared about the Russian style of dance so much, he would have stayed in Russia.He came to America and stayed the rest of his life, first founding his own School of American Ballet where he developed his OWN style of ballet and then created his company which is arguably the greatest ballet company in the world. He wanted to be an American.

      Are you suffering from tribalism, Stas? Balanchine didn't come from Russia, he was Georgian, and did run out of Russia at the first opportunity, and as fast as the train could take him, which wasn't fast enough for his tastes.

      Georgia is Russia. Balanchine was born in Saint Petersburg. Balanchine was trained is Saint Petersburg. Balanchine worked at the Imperial Mariinsky theatre. No one cares what you think.

      @@staslurik LOL. Dream on, Stas, and entertain us with your tribalism for free. Maybe you should read what Balanchine had to say about Russia with the occasion of NYCB's tournee. I doubt you'd like it though. Russia was not the making of Balanchine. America was not the making of Balanchine. *Balanchine was the making of Balanchine* , but this is something sad little nobodies like you, with sad little political agendas, will never understand. We are here for the art form, which is international. You are here to rub off whatever fame you imagine yourself you can rub off famous persons under ridiculous pretensions, for your sad little tribalism. YAWN.

I find quite a few dancers lack a natural flow and often have terrible stilted arm movements. I have now taken up 'pole dance' which requires high flexibility, great strength,fluidity of movement and of course...Artistry and musicality!! Top stars of 'pole dance' can show these bland ballerinas how to dance with feeling and skill!!!

She is one of the many female tall ballet danders with high extensions . I can mention at least several names. So not the right interpretation for this top ballerina. You haven’t seen her face up-close when she dances SL. She is very emotional and she has great interpretation of the role. Your explanation fits a dying 100 year old grandma vs super elegant , emotional, with great musicality and artistry , pretty young prima ballerina , with solid 8 years Vaganova training. You are giving wrong descriptions about Vaganova graduate; however, when you go on RUclips and type Somova’s name you can find an amazing performances on point at much younger age with her face being so much part of the dance; you can find a dance that is an exam particularly on her artistry and she is rocking it - just watch the face and you will see. However, you decide to write that nonsense on a video that doesn’t show her face because she is in great distance and viewers can see only large movements, small detailed movements that would shape the swan are difficult to see , May be if you each more carefully or several times. Unbelievable how people like you allow to disrespect the phenomenal performance, the solid training, the Vaganova training and choice for prima .
