    Peugeot 406 Hdi 90 (1999) LX Estate
    I had the same problem a few years ago - flashing airbag warning light intermitently.
    Traced this to the rubbish passenger airbag disabling switch under the handbake. Spent ages beforehand removing the front seats and checking the connections eveyone talks about, to no avail. Sometimes, switching the passenger airbag off, then on would fix the problem for a while, but it always came back.
    To fix, remove the airbag disable switch, the disassemble the housing. There is a small pcb with a few resistors and the actual switch mounted vertically with a 'ball' (pressure) on/off which is actuated by a post or pin connected to the keyway. When the key is inserted and turned on/off, the post will either connect with the ball or not, thus making or breaking the connection.
    Thought about this for a long time, and reassembled the switch housing with support for the vertically mounted switch (I couldn't find a suitable replacement at RS or Farnell). It now works perfectly and have not had an error for several years.
    The ball switch was weakening after time, and bends away from the pin, causing intermittent on/off of the ball switch. Reassmbling again with a piece of plastic to support it, cured the problem.
    I have photos if anybody interested. May your airbogs's work perfectly ..!! ;-)

      Hi Mike.
      I don't think I can make attachments here for 1 x pdf and 1 x zip of photos.
      If you email me at rlee.elite at gmail.com I'll send the changes I made.
      I guess you have the intermittent problem - sometimes a temporary cure is to disable and then enable the airbag using the key switch.
      The switch is pretty rubbish, and I've often thought of getting a switch from a scrapper, and doing a proper job on the switch. Faulty switch is now an MOT fail.

    I've got this job to do on my 306 2.0 XSi (W plate 2000, Phase 3 model) before next February 2017 and it seems to be the plugs as well. I believe the 406 shares a lot of the same parts as mine, and the same engine etc. So hopefully your video will be very applicable to my car.
    I bought a cheap Chinese Peugeot clone adapter back in 2013 and obtained the PP2000 software elsewhere. However it turned out the cheap clone adapters often need the firmware modding, so that the PP software does not reject it. According to the popular Peugoet internet forums, it seemed there was only one person in another country that did the chipping of these clone adapters for around £60 or something. Anyway I just flogged it in the end and did not bother chipping it.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  8 лет назад

      Yes PSA shares quite a lot of parts across their range.
      The best way to get PP2000 would be to buy one off amazon or ebay from a seller with a good feedback rating and that comes with the CD and instructions included as one. Try to get it from a UK seller so if there are any issues it doesn't have too far to go back to.

    Our 406 Saloon has had flashing airbag light which then stays permanently showing, for a long while now. After watching this and a couple of other blogs, my husband removed the drivers seat, including 2 pieces of cowling, and diconnected the 3 connectors ( also battery negative terminal first ), cleaned away all the dust and reconnected the 3 connectors. connected the battery negative, switched on the ignition and would you know it - the airbag light has gone out. He tried the connectors with the seat in place prior, but to no avail.

    hiya, just wondering could i crimp the wires together instead of soldering or would you say soldering was necessary?
    Also random one, I was looking under my seats, there is one connector hanging loose from the seat, not plugged in but with no obvious place to plug. Is this bad thing or is it probably for an option for example that my car doesnt have?
    Thanks
    Ben

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  11 лет назад +1

      you could connect the wires whatever way is handiest, although i prefer soldering i feel its more reliable, if wires are not crimped together correctly they can pull apart.

      @benhorne3926 11 лет назад

      peugeotCitroen2CV thanks for your reply I'll opt for the soldering then. Would you say this is particularly hard and what are the repercussions if you bugger it up? I'm confident enough, i just haven't done this sort of thing before so whats worst case scenario? Cars due its MOT soon so obviously need to sort it or its going to fail. Thanks in advance. Ben

    Hello, I have a 406 and the 'Airbag' word icon keeps flashing. I already connect the seats cables directly and this light keeps flashing some minutes after I start the engine. This 'Airbag' icon only depicts a bad connection in the FRONT airbags or in the seat airbags too? maybe i should connect the steering wheel airbag cables directly?. What do you think? The multifunction display doesn't show any message related to the airbag. Thanks for your answer!

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  10 лет назад

      Flashing in the same way it was here? The airbag icon that also lights up usually is to do with the passenger side airbag being deactivated due to the switch being set to off. Its hard to say what it could be if you have already fixed the wires under the seat, find someone with a pp2000 and get the fault codes read first before doing anything else.

    • @vcn89hd
      @vcn89hd 10 лет назад

      Thanks and Yes, it is flashing the same way. Maybe It could be loose cables in the steering wheel airbag?

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  10 лет назад

      ***** The steering wheel airbag has a very reliable connector on the back of it. The connectors that go into the airbag module dont tend to fail.
      I would NOT advise trying to work on the airbag module as there is a risk of explosion.
      What can break is the clock spring that allows the wheel to turn without the wires getting caught up. The multiplexed cars (i.e. 2001 and newer) use the com2000 unit which gives the problems, the older pre multiplex cars dont tend to have issues.
      I would definitely recommend having it connected to a diagnostic machine to find out what the car says is wrong, then once you know work from there to try and fix the issue.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  Год назад +1

      Hi there, on some occasions i have seen this when the airbag ECU itself is at fault.
      Is your PP2000 connecting to other modules ok? (i ask just to be sure its not an issue with it)
      The airbag module is susceptible to spilt drinks, thankfully its reasonably easy to change, install a replacement (you may need to ask on owners clubs, or the 406 facebook page, not 100% sure if the coupe airbag ECU is programmed differently to the saloon/estate one)
      Let me know how you get on, nice to hear of coupes that are still running. What engine is in it?

    The best bet is to register on 406oc, and start a thread, get a few pics up to give a better idea of whats going on.

    Hi. I have a 2005 Peugeot 307 XSI 2.0 petrol engine. The car has the "airbag anomaly" flashing on dashboard screen flashing intermittently. Do you think your method will work the same way in this car or should I try a different aproach? Also I have some engine issues. When the car engine is cold I have to wait up until it reaches 90° celsius for me to be able to push the accelerator. If I push the accelerator when it's cold, the engine wobbles a little and in most cases the engine shuts off. Do you have any idea of what my car might have or need? Thanks, Rich from Mexico.

      @peugeotCitroen2CV  9 лет назад +1

      Hi
      This video should fix the problem, normally the wires under the seat give trouble.
      As for the engine running problem, the best thing to do would to have the fault codes read, it could be the coolant temperature sensor sending the wrong information to the ECU. Im not overly familiar with the 2.0 Petrol engine it may be worth finding a local owners club, or just peugeot forums describe the problems and see what other 307 owners say.

    Hi, do you know if Peugeot 406 from 2001 can normally work with the airbags unplugged from the system. Airbags have more than 10 years so i think it will be better to simply unplug them. My airbag lights are always blinking, but i dont want to repair the airbags, they are just too old.What do you think?. Thanks!!

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  10 лет назад +1

      I think an 01 car will still flash the lights with the airbag unplugged, i stripped a 2000 406 apart a few years back and took out the airbags and airbag ecu, the cars dash still flashed an airbag light. The only car i found that doesn't flash any lights when the ecu is removed was a 1997 renault espace.
      Ive seen on the back they have a date printed usually after 10 years, it doesn't mean they won't work, they just can't be guaranteed to work. Its most likely printed for legal reasons so a car company can't be sued if airbags go off on 10 years or older cars.
      I don't think the car knows the airbags are out of date, my car is a 2002 and its airbags are also past 10 years old but i have no warning lights.
      your lights are probably coming on due to a fault like loose wiring, if its plugged into a pp2000 to read the faults you should be able to see whats at fault.

The 406oc website has an in car entertainment section which does seem to discuss these issues frequently, i believe many people choose to upgrade the head unit but personally i like the way the original head unit integrates with the dash and has the control stalk behind the steering wheel.

      However low refrigerant levels will cause it not to work, a regas might get it to work and whoever does that might have a refrigerant sniffer device which can test for leaks. Thats the first thing to try.

      Still have the car, have not had to remove the seats since that and it was back in 2013, if the seat need to come out yes it would need to be cut but considering how often this is required and given that soldering provides a very reliable connection i consider it worthwhile.
      However if you plan on regularly removing your seats then yes a good quality connector would be preferable.
