- Nintendo Labo, the cardboard construction kits for the Switch console, is the weirdest thing Nintendo's dreamed up in ages. Here are seven new things we learned playing with all the Labo Toy-Cons, plus gameplay of the Labo software and the customisation kit.
Nintendo Labo release date is 20 April, 2018 in North America, Australia, and Japan and 27 April, 2018 in Europe.

Luke and Ellen have been playing with Labo! Duelling cardboard cars, stomping around as robots and smashing out tunes on the Toy-Con piano. Here are seven new things we learned about Nintendo's bizarre cardboard playthings. Enjoy!
7:14 designed for young children and Luke
Outside Xtra holy crap gang!!!! Thank you so much for showing me this!!!! It seems super cool to get for my niece or nephew!!!! With that said...............I probably wouldn't be touching this with it 10 foot cardboard pole. Still looks like amazing technology though.^.
The shame-threshold is very high at OXtra... So high Ellen will never get past it...
Outside Xtra and that fishing rod for those fishing minigames
You two seemed liked you were having so much fun with this. It made me smile on a tough day, thank you.
I love to think of Nintendo beeing right in the middle of a brainstorm session, when suddenly Solid Snake enters the room wearing a Steve Jobs polo-neck sweater announcing: "The future is cardboard!"
I could equally see someone being like,'' Sean's back from vacation. How was -insert random third world country-?'' Sean:'' You wouldn't believe what they do with cardboard...''
Elmarto1814 polo-neck sweater yes, but dont forget the ill-fitting jeans and sports shoes
Snake would approve of Nintendo's R&D department.
Savvy Snake Snake will only be satisfied when they develop the Fulton
Cardboard tank is my favorite Peace Walker metal gear.
You had me at "cardboard piano."
Edit: You REALLY had me at Luke playing said cardboard piano and singing "Jump Up Super Star." This is officially the greatest thing I've seen in a while.
Kathy Aird Have you seen him perform " We like to Party" on a ukulele before?
Nick Bosshard Fair enough, it's the greatest thing I've seen since that.
Me: Nah I'm too old for this kinda thing...
Also me: CRAFTING STICKING PLAYING YAY!
That hug thou.)))
Psih Opat Everyone wants to hug Luke! ^^
Next dnd session hopefully Luke will become the bard with a mobile piano
I'm an engineer/software developer in my late twenties (and I can only claim that for another few months), and the first time I saw Labo it was a proper punch-the-air moment. I need it so bad it almost hurts.
as a fellow Engineer myself, I have to agree. it reminded me of my first toy which was a cereal box. Had so much fun
As a PhD student in an engineering field I was actually really curious how everything works with it. Now that I really know, I have to say I'm much more impressed at how they got everything to work without more advanced components.
Computer scientist/software engineer here, literally 40 years old, and I have a mighty need for this. Grew up on LEGO and suchlike, this is so right up my alley it's not even funny.
Nice of Nintendo to make playing with cardboard boxes cool for adults.
Whether is is a fad, success or failure I am glad it's being done. It takes people like Nintendo taking these risks to keep the entertainment industry from stagnating. I think they deserve a pat on the back purely for the concept.
Origami tech....ooohh an new genre Origamipunk.
Carpe Mkarzi I've seen Origami fantasy but Oragami punk sounds like an interesting genre.
Matthew Coyle it does. I am mulling it all over right now...oooh I have a couple ideas. To the computer!
Knight-Ranger ooooh nononononono Not paper...this is Punk baby, leather folding in a grim/dark neo future with angsty anti-heroes trying to overcome their fear of paper, Er leather cuts!
Elephant head, you say? Are you sure it's not a... Nellie-phant?
Don't you mean Ellen-phant?
Aww that Lucky dude getting a random gigantic hug from Luke.
Right!?
XD
Damn right, Where do we pay to get a Luke hug!?
You might say its very *Ellen* -gant?
BOOOOOOO!
But he did. You cant stop it now its to late.
I thought the same joke, looked at the comments and saw you’d done it already. Well done my friend, well done.
*slow clap*
BOOOOOOO! Boo.
"I'm a tall, adult man". Tall - yes. Adult... Are you sure, Luke, my boy?)
Luke and Ellen get paid to play with cardboard toys, while I spent most of my day in meetings. I contend that Luke and Ellen are adulting way better than I am right now.
Don’t you dare speak like that to Tall Ellen
Luke Adultman.
Imagine it in Mario kart? It wouldn't last, that game brings out anger... anger that no cleverly constructed cardboard can survive against
Amun Omar My uncle made a cardboard car for me, when I was a kid.
Also, seriously, first person Mario Kart looks cool, but functions terribly control-wise. Play Mario Kart 7 and you'll see what I mean. Even if it maintains 3rd person, motion/tilt controls are already garbage compared to analog inputs. Labo would only make Mario Kart worse.
7:07 look of pure joy and bliss
Don't get it wet
Don't expose it to bright light
Don't feed it after midnight
Got it!
When I was your age, all I had to play with was a cardboard box...
Bailey Alexis Snow Now you can play with high-tech cardboard box
LalinOwl the future has truly become wondrous lol
Oh I dreamed of playing with cardboard box. (With a Yorkshire accent)
Bailey Alexis Snow at least you had cardboard, I used sticks and rocks. Sometimes shoes to play with
omega5040 Luxury
Toycon? What are the Decepticons up-to now?
Term "decepti-con" would be applied to Chinese joy-con and toy-con knock-offs.
I have some reservations (an understatement) with Labo, but O|Xtra just takes that bad feeling, eats it, and regurgitates rainbows and adorable clips of Ellen going gigil over everything & Luke singing
I wouldn't expect a video about cardboard peripherals to be this entertaining!
Nintendo deserves a lot of compliments and the folks at OXtra deserve all the love!
(awn, I want a hug from Luke!)
I’m a simple man. I see an outside xtra video, I click.
Xxx_meme_stealer and then you make a simple comment, bless.
Can't decide on what's more adorable: Luke playing the piano and singing or Ellen on that robot suit!
"Grown-ups don't need to be self-conscious." _clip of Luke trying to sing while playing the piano_
Um...are you absolutely _sure_ you don't need to be self-conscious?
Couldn't help but notice the girl sitting next to him got right the hell out of there.
They don't NEED to be self-conscious, they just probably should be.
:( no bulli luke pls
He wasn’t that bad.
I'm _trying_ to use comedic hyperbole. Geez.
But can you forge a ring with it?
Sauron The Dark Lord of Mordor maybe a cardboard one?
The most powerful kind of ring. Just dont forget to take it off before you go for a swim.
The One ring forged in a pile of burning cardboard on top of mt Garbage pile, doesn't quite have the same RING (unexpected bonus pun) to it.
WE DEMAND A FULL LUKE PERFORMANCE! ASAP
I am so excited to have grown-up craft time when this comes out. Grown-up craft time is like any other craft time, but you drink gin* while you do it.
*gin may be substituted for your adult beverage of choice
Fanta Lemon counts as an adult beverage right?
(I'll get some Lilt too, just in case.)
Sure! You get to decide what being an adult means to you. Sometimes it means eating cake for breakfast. That's the trade off for having to pay bills and do laundry.
I'll say this much: I'll never look at cardboard boxes the same way again.
After spending most of the week so far in the hospital with my very ill Mam, this was one of the few things that has made me smile. Thank you and keep up the amazing content.
Ellen, Keep Smiling :) hope your feeling better today dude x
AWW! Luke playing the little piano is adorable.
This gave me such a supreme sense of joy!
Formally requesting a video where all 6 of you play a knockout style tournament with the little remote control robots. Like a soft cardboard BattleBots episode, XD
I would be worried about oil and sweat from my hands wearing down the material faster than it did with the old chrome and naugahyde peripherals of the Genesis/SNES period.
Finally, now I don't have to order giant screen televisions just to play in the box... Does it come with Robot Pirate Island?
thank you luke and ellen! i was considering buying some of the labo items and i'm now convinced since you've told me *a-labo-ut* it
ok...i'm sorry
Gab Curry no you aren’t don’t lie to us
Aw, that hug was so adorable
I've been catching up on my subscriptions and just wanted to let you know This is Awesome and it has just upgraded the switch to my bucket list because this is the coolest thing ever :D
Love Luke channeling his inner Peter O'Hanraha-hanrahan at 5:17. I hear some third party game creators said of Labo that they don't like it, but they have to go along with it.
I really love the show of the weekend style. That branching out into other videos is so good.
Gosh, I actually do hope that toy-cons are incorporated into future games. Not a required piece for the full game experience but an option as an accessory.
My (28th) Birthday is right after these officially, the more I see the more I am really wanting the variety pack. . . that piano looks like waaay too much fun to fiddle with.
For those saying that "it seems like too much money for mini games and a bunch of cardboard" you have to think about the fact that you are not mostly paying for the materials, but for the amazing design work that went into these:
- getting and developing the nifty ideas
- programming the games
- testing materials
- making sure the cardboard shapes are stable, generally durable and easily repairable
- AND have a charming look'n'feel to them
- devolping instructions that can be understood by kids
- designing the art for the instructions and games
A lot of work goes into these things that people tend to overlook and this is not really something that has been done before in such quality, so it's not like they could just copy-paste from a predecessor.
And I also assume Nintendo pays their workforce more than minimum wage.
This makes me feel like a little kid again and I want to cry in the best way possible
We will now be comfortable with paying $60 for IKEA cardboard. You win this time, Nintendo.
Lucas M
They always win.
They're mad geniuses.
Sony: "Hey Nintendo! Bet you can't sell cardboard!"
Nintendo: "Hold my beer..."
It's amazing what a little ingenuity can do. Selling cardboard... it's madness!
It´s 80 $ isn´t it ?
I mean, they're also selling software to go with the cardboard. If you don't count that as part of the product, then when you bought Breath of the Wild you paid $60 for a small, shiny frisbee.
Its $80 for the robot kit (which looks like its got more of a full-game in it) and $70 for the variety kit (which includes the bike game with a track editor and a very impressive suite of music creation tools as part of the piano - as well as some basic software logic training for developing your own toys).
Great video, this was so interesting. And naturally, any video with Lukes amazing jokes and Ellens gorgeous smile is a great video.:D
That hug was so sneaky and adorable
How thrilled must Nintendo be, they've managed to get us excited about putting together cardboard.
Hey, it worked for them in the 70s. Why not marry their paper and cardboard printing experience with their high-tech motion-controlled video games and see what develops?
Yeah. Before they made games, they made toys.
And one of their most popular were stuff like Labo. And from what Gaijin Goomba showed us. Theu were pretty cool.
a) i want to hug Luke too. b) i think i will cry every day until I manage to get myself a switch, everything about it is the coolest thing ever
I never knew that I wanted a video of Luke getting a hug but now I see that was what I was missing in life.
I like how it encourages creativity!
I was skeptical about it at first. But then I saw your video and game theory' s video on this and I like the idea more and it looks like it could be fun
But, wait, how does it....? I HAVEN'T EVEN FIGURED OUT MAGNETS YET!!!
Wow, this looks really cool.
Wait Luke didn’t try and play show of the weekend theme on that piano misses all the opportunities
We live in hope, it might come for this week
123 456 Aw, I now find myself disappointed!
What a brilliant use of cad design to create truly fun and educational games for children. I'm really impressed.
The puns under each entry are great. I swear one was a metallica reference (... And justice peripherals)
I will never not be excited about this. I could be 30 and I'd still be excited about this. It will be so fun to play with
That looks like a lot of fun! Makes me want to get a Switch just to play with all those cardboard things!
I forgot this was a thing! But it was fun to watch. 🙂
Holy crap! I have never seen this labo thing before. That looks really cool.
Dude if this came out when I was a kid I would have loved it. Seriously, I would have loved it. Its exactly the kind of thing I'd have playec with.
This seems amazing!
[Luke starts singing]
Lady on the back: “I should leave now”
I just looked at the Image to this video. Saw Ellen with Labo Robot Gear and I knew that I must watch this!
Luke's Speed Racer shirt is amazing!
I'm not sure I'll ever be comfortable with the word "Labo" being said out loud...
People eventually got comfortable with "Wii." Mostly.
Especially if you get it wet.
"I've got a moist Labo" :(
That’s ok. Just call it a toycon!
Toycon sounds like a knock-off you buy from the market.
Robot kit Ellen is the most adorable thing I'll see all day.
This stuff looks SO cool!
I used to make stuff with cardboard!
...Until the dark times.
[When bugs made homes in it!]
Nintendo was a toy company at one point. Nice to see that they can still hold up that fun today.
Such an adorable thumbnail.
Luke and Ellen look like two of the most adorable giant 3 year olds waiting for their parents to finish their shopping. I'm almost convinced Nintendo Labo exists because of OutsideXtra
Im excited now!
Just imagine someone who's gone out and bought all of the Labo kits and now has to deal with storing all the pieces of cardboard when not using them.
Growing up is overrated am still a child at heart.
oh no...those cute smiles and neat boxes, no NOOOOO my weaknesses!! Dammit now I gotta buy them and have some diggidy dang fun.
Love You guys...really great video! Seeing you enjoying Labo and laughing so much made me happy! :D
I like the first kit with the five different "Toys". Do you have any information on the bundled Labo software? What can you develope or program with it?
I hadn't even heard of Labo before this. I'm going to buy this.
I have never been serenaded so beautifully as Luke serenaded Ellen and all of us... granted I have never been serenaded before, but if I ever am I hope it is via nintendo Labo instruments and a tone death person.
Oof, Luke’s piano concert gave me life
I didn’t really have an opinion, but now I’d like to try it out. Well done guys.
Nintendo Labo is just proving what parents everywhere already knew: That kids have more fun playing with the box than the actual toy!
I like the new music you been playing recently 👍🎵🎶🎹🎼
Luke and Ellen are such a great duo. This was a fun breakdown.
You two are so cute together.
I dont even feel jealous seeing you two together having fun.
Luke has good taste in satirical news programmes
I imagine that in 20-30 years, this will be a collector's item.
I would totally buy the Labo set if I could afford it (same with Switch, actually). I used to play with all kinds of Lego as a kid and teen and I still love that kind of hands-on construction, so yeah I would totally buy this for the visceral fun of it.
Damn. How about that Racer X shirt, huh?
Finally Nintedo has done it, going from selling consoles as toys to selling actual toys!
I would love to see a full size nintendo labo piano
That would be awesome!!!
Optical extensometers use cameras and reflective targets to track and precisely measure very small changes in length. The technology has been around for years.
Maybe I can start doing my work at home with the Switch.
There is a Mecha game with an associated build kit.
OF COURSE I'M EXCITED
Like: " where my hands always this massive?... I was born with my adult hands. I was a very distressing baby." Weirdest mental image I've had today.
This looks cool! Neat idea Nintendo!
"Don't get it wet", so it's basically a nintendo produced gremlin :-D. Let's see if the manual also says not to feed the toy-cons after midnight either :-D
Anyone besides me think it is hilarious that they are coming out with homemade peripherals in the US on 420... Just wonderful marketing
Luke - "If you are an adult like me..."
There are surely NO adults like Luke...
The cat piano did my dog a frighten. Lol
Imagine when you pre order this its like
a box inside of a box and inside of that box is a box
Wow. First good video in this year.
Makes me want to buy switch now.
