Sewing Insulated Curtains for our Skoolie: the Struggle is Real!

  • We can't believe how much we struggled to sew insulated curtains for our skoolie! Curtains are supposed to be the EASIEST thing to sew... and Kerry knows how to sew! It took many trials and errors before we finally figured out how to measure before cutting. The canvas fabric was so thick, we had to add a 16th of an inch for every fold we made for all the seams and hems! Eventually we did make progress, but it had to be at a slower, stress-free rate so it didn't continue to trigger Kerry's c-PTSD. Keep watching in future videos to see the curtains all done!

    About Us:
    Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
    We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
    We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, throughout the Skoolie Build, and to Infinite Adventures Beyond!
    Mike & Kerry

    I would make a curtain "case" fit to the window, then cut the insulation to fit the curtain case which you slide in the insulation. This would allow you to take the curtains off and wash. Using canvas, you have to wash and dry it first - before cutting and steaming to stop the shrink issue. Curtain case... as in think about a pillow case type construction for a pocket to slide the insulation in and out.

    It looked cooler just watching once you got the curtains in place. We have a class-c and needed to make multi-layer curtains to seal off the cab from the house and started with a pocket for the rod but it was a pain to open and close. Attempt number two we switched to curtain grommets that slide kind of easily on the rod. When you open the curtain it kind of folds up and it flattens out when you close them. Just search for "curtain grommets" if this doesn't make any sense.

      Same here, I have made lots of custom lined pleated curtains for myself and friends. I wish I lived near by, would gladly do them for you for free. But I’m too old to cut fabric on the floor, I’ve learned having the proper work space saves so much time and prevents bad attitude, frustration or PTSD in your case. I was so sorry to see what you went through but admire you for sharing that with us. Mike, you are one great man and husband, helping her with this project. As a few already suggested, you can add those magnets along the side seam in those you haven’t made yet....and, allow yourself extra fabric for bottom hem, better to trim 1/4 - 1/2” off then be short that amount. Also, promise yourself if a windy day is forecasted, don’t do any projects! You’re a strong woman with a beautiful gentle heart, Kerry!

      @@greeneyedgirlina Yes, in hindsight I see how important it was that I find a place to do this project INDOORS! And you're right, I should have just allowed extra fabric and then trimmed! I think I am going to open up those seams and add the magnets to make them close, though! Thank you! 😁

    1st off, kudos to Kerry for holding up. PTSD is unique to each person who suffers from it. One can get an idea of what the person is having to deal with, but will never fully grasp the total affects of it. 2nd, Mike, you're one hell of a person, human being, and man for having the love, patients and understanding of Kerry's PTSD. 3rd, let me make a suggestion to you on the windows. Besides the curtains, did you ever consider doing low E film on the windows? Yes they are single pane windows, but what you want as an end result is to keep the heat out. UV rays are what carry the heat. Not to be confused with Kerry the heat. This is the exact function of low E film. If you do this, your insulated curtains will act as an insulated window panel and the low E film should work quite well.

    I'm impressed he knew what a bobbin was. Lol There is a reason - so far that I've seen - every reflectix type curtain style is a roll up style of some sort. Fillers are too thick to push back all the way out of the way so people roll them up and down. I'd be worried about them holding up if you open and close them alot with this design too. But I hope they do after all the work that went into them. They do look good! ❤✌

    Honestly, for the tiny homes I've helped build, I have learned to love making insulated blinds, instead of curtains. You need to preshrink canvas, so it doesn't shrink during ironing. Wash it, dry in a hot dryer, then do your cutting and sewing. The kind of blind I recommend is an accordion blind, which just needs to be about 1.5 x the length of the opening to function well. I use swivels to attach my blinds to curtain rods. It makes the blinds easier to open and close without bunching.

    They look amazing and I understand needing every quarter inch of space accounted for. Why didn’t you just roll them up and on the backside, the window side, you have a flap of the same material that you have on the front side and when you roll up your curtain and attach it then you’ve got that flap of material that you can go around the reflects because that’s what’s going to be on the outside of the role then when you roll it. Just an idea. A lot less stress. But they look very good and I’m so proud of you for hanging in there.

    You may want to consider sewing on or ironing on velcro if you want to create that precise fit. Can't wait to see your update video post first wash. In the future make sure you pre-wash any fabric as a safety.

    👍🏻❤️ Kerry I just want to hug you ! And tell you it will be alright. ❤️ I hate those “why can’t I make this work right ?! “ moments ! They drive me crazy, keep my head spinning at night, but then...THEN ! When it finally works out 💪 it’s such a great feeling 👍🏻😁. I’ve found Primal Scream Therapy is great, gets the stress all the way up & out from the bottom of your gut, and it scares the neighbors too 🤣 win win 🤣. Mike hug her for us. ❤️. And just so you know.... we don’t need a video of a completed project, we just want to ride along in the days and ways it all really is, it’s okay to burn the toast, we all do it. 🤣👍🏻❤️ bad analogy, whatever, you know what I mean. 🤣

    OK, I'm only a few minutes in, so if you've solved this then please ignore.
    Keep the panels. They're fine. You need to add tabs, or, better yet, O-rings. Insert grommets into the top edge of the rectangle (maybe every 2" or so).
    You could also try sewing the reflectors into vertical rectangles within one panel of the canvas. That way the curtain can fold like an accordion.
    Weirdly enough, I'm gonna suggest you watch Bernadette Banners video on sewing a Victorian corset. It'll give you really good tips on how to install a grommet.

    I believe your canvas cotton fabric is shrinking from the steam and hot iron. I sew and craft all the time. I also want to say y'all were not doing to bad. You jumped right in and kept going till you were happy with your finished product. I have been thinking about how to do new curtains in our travel trailer for months. The blinds that came in our rig are just so bad now. We use reflectics in our windows when we need to during the winter and summer. It is a pain to store them. I also don't like not being able to see out quickly.

    Idea about to help cool down the sides of the bus, would mounting rv awnings to the sides of the deck work?

    • @BussyMcBusface
      @BussyMcBusface  3 года назад

      It probably would help a lot by shading the sides, but I don't know how much it would cost, since we would probably need 4 of them!

      @@BussyMcBusface Attach so they are removable. Then, put up the awning on the side of the bus that is most exposed to the sun. Doing just one side wouldn't be as fully effective, as doing 2, yet would be much more economical, IMO. How you park the bus (where you have good choices) will play a role in how effective an awning on just one side would be.

      Two cheap solutions ..... 1. Keder Rails & keder rope and outdoor fabric from fabric.com (great prices) can make easy up easy down awnings. Or just the fabric with grommets tied to deck with expandable paint poles to hold up. No need for full on sun setter expensive awnings.

    I made curtains out of something called "Warm Windows" years ago. Forgot the name of them until I was decluttering the house and found the "destructions" . I remember being as frustrated, and gave up and estimated everything. It all worked out in the end, and I used them like roman shades and pulled them up with cord run through loops. They lasted 25 years, the last couple they were in tatters from the sun rot here in Colorado. Just a thought if you get tired of pushing them to the side.

    For my headaches I take Equate Headache Relief from Wal Mart. It has to be the green bottle not the red. The label states that it has the same ingredients but the green bottle is the only one that works. It is a generic Exederin, but Exederin does not work either. I take 2 tablets at the first sign of a headache. Even if I take it after the headache is in full swing it gets rid of it. I will be completely drained of energy but the pain will be gone.

    we took our reflectix and glued inside our cabinets on the outside edges. We have "attic" storage in our 5R and its 8-9' above floor. Obviously don't use those particular cabinets much. So they are our ornament storage. Lined with the reflectix, I keep all our seasonal stuff up there. It's a good 12-15" tall, 24" deep and 8 feet long. If it won't fit, I can't have. Reflectix keeps delicate stuff from getting too hot or too cold. In my pantry and regular cabinet, does the same. Our 5R has really good insulation, but 100 degree days still affect stuff.

  • @watahyahknow
    @watahyahknow 3 года назад +1

    wat you might be able to do is make the curtains using two pieces of canvas layed on top of eachother , then sew vertical pockets along the total length say 2 inch wide top to bottom closed at the bottom and open at the top on the window side , then put strips of the mylar stuff in the pockets with a little velcro inside the pocket at the top holding the mylar in place and preventing it to slump down into the bottom of the pockets made in the cloth
    this way you can take the mylar out to wash the canvas and it will crunch / wrinkle up a little eazier when you slide them open , it allso makes making the curtains eazier as youre not fighting the mylar and can iron the end result after stitching / sewing before sticking the shiny stuff in , you can allso make the curtains a little longer then the window as they crunch up eazier and are eazier to shorten
    as for the bottom hem : have a piece of off colour fabric (the same brown as the couch ?) or fake leather cut a strip from that fold it over a few times to hide the edges and make the bottom hem from that , that way you can fudge with the length a little and when using leather edge should the curtain touch a wet surface it whon't wick it up intoo the curtain like a towel
    cutains are hard to make even if there plain curtans there just unwieldy and hard to measure
