- Champion Lawnmower starting problems, Repairing it, it didn't start now does
I acquired this lawnmower from someone who was throwing it away because he couldn't get it started. It was both complete and in good visual condition so I asked if I could have it.
All it needed was its carburettor cleaned.
Brilliant, same mower, same issue, followed your video and now works perfectly. Thank you very much
You are very welcome. I am pleased it helped! Many thanks for watching, please like, share and if you like the channel, subscribe!
Thanks for the vid - so useful. I have the same mower and did what you showed here when wouldn't start. Found the main jet had jellified fuel hanging from it. Washed the carb in petrol and used a brush to clean out. I was so happy when it started! Will now always run the tank dry before storing!
Thank you!

Had the same problem with my Champion mower - would start on full choke , but stalled as soon as you backed the choke off ......
This video gave me a good idea of what to expect as I took the carb off & how to clean it out .
Put everything back together & now it runs 100% 👍🏻
Result !!!
Most of the time it is a dirty carburettor! Well done. (I have another I must fix which isn't.... Though the carb will need cleaning too).

Hello all, just to add to this video, if you loosen the bolts on the side you can remove the whole carb that makes the whole process a lot easier.
Moreover, the part you really need to be cleaning ideally is the air /fuel jet that you need to screw out and rinse in carb cleaner; the mixing bowl as seen in this video are often dirty but the Air/fuel jets are the important part in cleaning a carb as they are often blocked causing issues with starting, power, rev chasing and idling.
If you are not going to clean the carb air/fuel jet and just the bowl only, I would recommend just firing some carb cleaner into the hole on the air filter holder and see if that works.
In my experience, a shot of carb cleaner through that hole will fire the mower up in many cases.
It is easier if you remove the carb, and better as you can pull the whole jet, including the holes in the emulsion tube, however, I did run the torch cleaner through the main jet, not the needle valve jet.

if you clean carbs, you need a screw driver and remove the jets and clean properly
Just had to do this exact procedure to get ours going using this video.Top video- great stuff
Mark Tomlinson many thanks.

I have the same mower. First time I had poor starting, while stripping to do what you done I found it was the air box / manifold joint distorting allowing the mixture to go lean.
This weekend the mower wouldn’t start despite playing with the carb. Took the head off to find that the head gasket had burnt and split next to the exhaust valve. The lack of compression on the pull cord pointed to a cylinder leak. Hope this helps anyone having starting problems not sorted by your excellent tutorial.
Sorry I didn't see your comment earlier but the way RUclips handles comments is sub optimal.
Just typical. Doesn’t work, I’ll throw it away! I’ll just spend over £100 and buy a new one! A lucky tip find, good on ya!, fixed it for no cost. Excellent.
Cheers!. It does annoy me when people do that. I picked up what would if new, have cost me £250 welder at the same tip a year or two before. I'd be grateful for a like and share, and if you like the channel, subscribe!
My friend had the same mower, wouldn't start,it had way too much oil, old petrol and a dodgy spark, turned out the cable on the hand grip which enables the spark wasn't working properly
The dead man's handle? Yes, that can be a problem which is why I start with easystart as it gives you an idea where the fault is.

Found one of these in the workshop of our new house we moved into. Sorry if it’s a stupid question but is it a 2-stroke or 4-stroke engine?
It's a 4 stroke and not a stupid question if you don't know how to tell.

I have the same mower as this, it starts okay but as soon as move it off the choke it's runs way to fast, it's racing away to the max. Any idea why this would happen and how to fix it? Thanks in advance
Have you checked the governor is free to move? And that when you start the engine, the governor moves?

@@BensWorkshop where abouts is that located? Novice here! Thanks for quick response
@@martinbeesley8334 On the side of the engine near the carburettor. I believe it is mechanical. It will have a linkage to the throttle. If (I believe it is) it is mechanical it will have an arm coming out of the crank case going to the carb vi a spring, otherwise it will be air in which case it will be under the pull start cover.
Hi, What is the tool called that you used to clean the Carb Jets?
It's a welding torch tip cleaner. Available from Amazon and welding supply shops (note that the shop is likely to be cheaper than Amazon). Also note that they are files, so don't jam in the bigger ones.

Surely it’s easy start in the bowl right?
No, that would assume the carburettor works. In the throat, and if it fires you know all is well apart from fuel supply.
