My name is Matthew and I live in a van. I lost my job due to "cut backs" from the pandemic of 2020 and decided to seriously restructure my life. I am also a single dad who needed to find a solution that would allow me to remain in my daughter's life and plan for her future. After tons of research into #vanlife, I knew it was for me.
From March 2021 until October 2021 I spent my days building out my Chevrolet Express 2500, which came to be known as "Lucky" and as of October 18, 2021 I have been living in Lucky full time.
The build was done with almost no experience on my end and I used the one incredible tool I had at my disposal - the internet - to learn what I needed to build Lucky into a very comfortable tiny home.
I have always had a bit of a passion for being in front of the camera and really enjoy capturing the world around us. This really played into how I was feeling after almost a year of working from home when I "commuted" from the bedroom to the couch. I was starting to feel extremely unhealthy, unmotivated and despondent. I HATED that, and that's not a word I like to throw around. This new lifestyle gives me opportunities I just didn't have before and I am so excited to be able to share it all with you.
I truly believe we all have the capabilities to turn our lives around, should we choose to do so - and if I can inspire you to shoot for something better then I have done a decent job and that will keep me going.
There is more to life than the consume, consume, spend, spend lifestyle I feel we have all been conditioned to follow and I just want to do the best I can for myself first and foremost. Our time is limited and I do not want to waste another second on a lifestyle that doesn't bring me joy!

Also from a Daddy's Girl who lost her Dad a year ago, please enjoy every second with her!! I am a total Daddy's girl, he and I were very close. My parents divorced when I was 12 and I stayed with my Dad, my parents left it to us so my brother and I stayed with Dad and my sister went with my Mom. We all went back and forth to visit the parent we didn't live with. I am very proud of you and the way you handle the situation with Brooklyn and when you get her. You and her Mom have done a great job of making sure she has you both in her life. Sadly the isn't always the case nowadays. I raised my son on my own until he was 8 and then I had help from his stepdad. You are making the effort to make sure she knows you are her Dad, you are there for her, and mostly that you love her. Trust me as she gets older she will appreciate you even more. I know in the beginning of your vanlife you had concerns and guilt about the way things were but you have no reason to worry! You are doing and AMAZING job!!! Keep being the AWESOME Dad you are and I guarantee you and her will always be thick as thieves. Also that song you played while setting out her things made me cry like a baby!!
Truth ! Yup, Dad's are the BEST !!! Mothers and daughters often have very complicated relationships.
I’m 61. I lost my Dad at 50. I miss him every minute and a big piece of my heart is GONE FOREVER!
Also, trust me. Your daughter will remember every moment with you no matter how young. I hv memories of my Dad when I was still in diapers! He was my world!

My kids are 53 and 49. I miss their babyhoods and childhoods. Looking at old pictures makes me sad, although they were happy times. You’re wise to take it all in and think about how fast it is going. Hope the Pirate Princess feels better soon. Sleep was the best thing for her.

Re popsicle, I use a bowl too 😂 but usually start out with a cupcake liner to catch the drips. Loved the scenery shots. Sad you are missing much anticipated family time. A week goes fast. Hope Brooklyn recovers fast from whatever bug she has.

Matthew, little tip when cracking hard boiled eggs, crack them and then stick them in a bowl of water. the water with soak in the cracks and shell will slid right off.

Enjoyed the video tonight, thank you. I realized while I was watching that like many children, mine too, their legs hang down, lower circulation and get uncomfortable. I made my son a foam block and cut it as he grew. Less complaints that his legs hurt.

When you have your van heater on defrost, if you have the air circulation to have the fresh air exchange button on the windows will not frost up when driving…just found this out with my chai Len😊
Yup, the AC system also kicks on to act as a dehumidifier... But if you don't have the freon in the system, it won't work 😢

Hey Matthew, Brooklyn and Ms Penny 🐾 This was such an easy going, peaceful and exceptionally Beautiful vlog, in so many ways. I so enjoyed being along for this journey with all three of you. Music was restful, especially at the final few moments. Having refused to grow up myself, being a grey haired kid now at 66+ It still feels to me that I was 18 not that long ago. I do not find it melancholy or sad.....mostly wonder how I fit all of it into so, in reality, a few years. So hold on tight to your time with Brooklyn and Penny. But tighter yet to the memories being and to be made just around the next corner. Be Safe Be Healthy and Always find Joy in your day ❤❤❤

You might want to consider having a couple of those eggs peeled in advance for the trip with Brooklyn. This way, you can both have a healthy snack on the drive. Poor baby, hope she feels better soon. Sending hugs to you all!

Even though I have lived the majority of my life in the Rockies, I am still in awe of the beauty that surrounds me. Good call on the hotel, Little Miss B definitely needed the rest.
We came upon a big accident too last Friday coming home from a day trip out-of-town. I had to find a different way back home for us & fortunately we were able to back up as I got out of the SUV to direct the Mr to get onto an off-ramp. It's always frustrating when an accident, heavy traffic or construction can put you behind several hours on your driving.

I like the way you turned the situation round to a positive and stayed good humoured throughout. I tend to get tetchy and annoyed with such situations, despite knowing that does no good and it can’t be helped etc, etc. Just me, unfortunately, and I wish I wasn’t that way. Oddly, when I am with others in same situation, I am usually the calm one. 🤷🏻♂️

I have a motto, "Plan, don't rush." but it's always good to be prepared for plans to change.
Looking at my route home to Waterloo in 2022, I must have been through Golden, I think I tried an early stop in Kamloops after driving though the night from Tsawassen but I was too early. I pushed through to Canmore before stopping, aside from those pull-over and snooze pit stops along the way. I stopped at the Last Spike (Canadian Railway History) because it was there.
There was a top-notch rest stop near Calgary, but I have no idea where. I really wish I'd taken the time to really SEE Canada's west.
Next time.... this year, perhaps.

Start with your current vehicle and try to do weekend ventures to local state parks or urban boon docking in your state
Maybe rent a van similar to what you think you need for a weekend and do a no build build like a sleeping cot in it
Then, when you think it's feasible, plan for the next step

Look into a dash egg cooker for hard cooked eggs. They peel like magic and very low wattage. Great for camper cooking.
Kids grow real fast, I have 3 that r now 30, 29, 26 n I miss when they were babies . They don't have time for me anymore. Divorce messed up everything, hold on tight for the ride. Time goes real quick. The song u chose makes me sad but so true .

I really enjoyed this video Matthew. Beautiful drive with great music choices...just what I needed after this crazy 11 hour work day. Hopefully your taking a Vitamin C/Zinc/ Magnesium/ginger combo to keep your immune system strong (that's my trick to keep the boogies away). Hopefully a relaxed day was all Brooklyn needed as well for a immune system reboot.

So funny about the egg coooker. I had a visit from a RUclipsr that eats a lot oh hard boiled eggs, also a nomad. I showed him my egg cooker. He finally got his own and couldn't be happier!

Yikes, sorry your travel plans got delayed, especially when the roads were great 🤔 But thank goodness you were at that spot and was able to get a room 👍 maybe it was a blessing as Brooklyn was not feeling very well, and with still having a few hours to travel. I actually remembered seeing a hwy 1 closure on our coquihalla group on fb and wondered if that impacted you guys, apparently it did. I have a van that has over 220,000 miles (USA )
so his can obviously go over 300,000 km with proper maintenance 😅
