That's nothing. Would you believe that sorry ass Mom of ours got up every morning and fixed a full breakfast for seven kids? And she had the nerve to have our school uniforms laid out on our beds after breakfast. And what the F was up with all of that being a Room Mother and Den Mother bullshlt? And what kind of psycho leaves lemonade and iced tea out on the breezeway with a plate full of whoopie pies while we played in the yard? Some days i look back and wonder how we managed to keep our sanity after growing up like that...
Same here I was a latch key kid in grade school, the only restriction was to call my mother at work to let her know I was home safe. Never had any problems.
Yup. When I was 12 my parents needed to travel 8 hours away because of a family problem. They left me alone in the backwoods for A WEEK. Their advice: don't burn the house down and avoid the bears; and don't touch the guns. I think I was 10 when they put me on a Greyhound bus to go visit my grandmother several hours away, including transfers. When my oldest was 8 we started leaving her in charge while we went grocery shopping each week for a couple of hours. We recently left our 12 year old home for half a day to run errands. She can cook for herself, she has a cell phone for emergencies, and we have an 80 pound and a 100 pound dog in the house. They're not as fragile as people think they are. Teach them a little independence. Let them know that you'll treat them as an adult as long as they act like an adult. Watch them blossom.
I am almost 62. We did out chores(that is work we were forced to do by our parents for those that don’t understand that term) then were kicked out of the house and told to go play and be back when the street lights came on.

A a ferral genx'er... there was no crying and running home to momma - if an argument brewed - my mom's words were: 'if you aren't broken (physically) or bleeding (not 'mother nature kind') - figure it out - don't come crying to me!' To the younger generations, I provided 'exclusionary examples' for clarification... and I posted this because my mom was teaching us to negotiate, communicate with others in a stressful situation... aka 'life skills'.
Oh man i remember going to my dad's house on his weekend visitations ( i was 10yrs) and he would call and order me a pizza and have me watching Saturday Night Live at his house while he's out at the bars getting drunk with his buddies. 😂
Oh yeah? My Dad was such a piece of crap that he used to let me sit in his lap and snuggle while we listened to Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, Traffic, Blind Faith and Wishbone Ash. Sometimes the sick bastard would tousle my hair and give me little kisses on top my head. And he'd be at EVERY SINGLE track meet, swim meet and baseball game. I mean, what kind of Dad pulls shlt like that? And would you believe he had the nerve to pay for me to go to Swarthmore College? Man, i don't know how we survived...
I was changing diapers and making bottles while babysitting my 4 siblings of different ages at 11… best lesson of why I needed to wait to have kids. Remember the stupid pregnancy crap with a bunch of girls trying to get pregnant in highschool… I already knew what they were in for.
What exactly do you think is going to happen? I leave my kids home alone all the time. They can all cook and clean and do laundry; there's a cell phone in case of emergencies, and there's 150 pounds of dogs guarding the place in case of someone wanting to break in. Plus there are neighbors up and down the block they can go to for help as well. God gave us fear to make us respect dangers and take proper precautions. He didn't give it to us so that we'd be cowering in a corner all our lives. To paraphrase a Muslim parable, first tie up your camel, and then trust God.
I was driving by myself on the road often by 10.....just as soon as I could see over the steering wheel and touch the peddles with my feet.. Technology has ruined today's youth and many adults in every way .
