I don't even own a rc car but i want to get a trail honcho for my first car. These videos give so much inspiration and make me REALLY want an rc car. Gotta wait til August on my birthday 🥺. Anyway cheers for the awesome videos, from Australia 🇦🇺
Haha! 5 years later axial decides that spare tire is a nice touch..."we should mount a spare tire on the scx6 honcho" 🤔 nice touch👌 love watching budget builds,so much good info
GREAT IDEA Matt!!! I've never done a Servo Winch, but what a multiple problem solver. On my Wraith Build, I really had no room for conventional Winch. With this, I just need to mount a Fairlead up front!!! Thanks for the great ideas!! Carmine 🚂
That is a great way to repurpose old servos. Thanks for showing us how to do that. Still very much enjoying this series and I look forward to a more open budget build off between you and Josh in the future. 🤙🏽
Forgot how much this series is helping me with my ideas for the scx10 ii deadbolt project I just started on my channel Quak Rc, for its newly announced REBOOT. Im going to be ordering some stickers for support of your channel. Love all the work you do. 👍👍. Cheers.
Thanks Matt! I like learning about stock servos for this type of stuff. Always a little different with different servos. Your build is coming along nicely. I can't wait to see what is done next. 👍🏼👍🏼
Definitely the best how-to explanation for a servo winch. Shame you don't have an easy 'better' mounting solution though. I'm sure you'll come up with something!
Nice👍 a spare, especially one with a different tread pattern is a nice touch. Not many people that I knew when I wheeled had a matching spare . If you factor in the cost of four matching “bigger diameter” off road tires, you were happy just to be prepared with a spare let alone matching tread haha, great video !
Awsome way to repurpose parts kickin around the work shop! 👍 . Spare tyre looks awsome. Can’t wait to see how u mounted the servo/winch in the honcho and see it in action! 🇨🇦👍.

Wicked & very informative tutorial on making a servo winch, thanks! Plenty of ways to make it a very cool accessory on not only Crawlers but other types of RC's. And a guy can make it with as beefy a servo as necessary for intended use. Would've never guessed that's what ya'll were up to on your Instagram post, lol. Another great episode added to a wicked series!!

Love the servo winch mod.. i had 20kg power hd laying on my part bin.. i kinda dislike the mounting on spare tire, just suggestions.. maybe put the spare tire flat to the honcho bed.. Funny and awesome video.. keep up!!! Cant wait for week 9 🙌🙌🙌
Finally a video on a servo winch that makes it easy to copy and explains everything. A couple questions why leave the plastic gear in the servo? won't it see more stress as a winch?
Hey Craig, yeah, that plastic gear will eventually give up the ghost, but considering the price of this servo new, I'm not too concerned. If I get a few dozen pulls, I'll be thrilled.
complete gear sets to rebuild are super cheap, but still have plastic gear. I have heard that there is a metal gear that shows up on ebay that drops right in place of the plastic
This weeks DIY was Such a big help I am saving this one and will be doing it on my truch soon! I have a 8ch radio and 3, 3 position switches that are not in use now , Can I just plug in the Servo Winch in to one of them for it to work?
great explanation of the servo rehash for the winch, I will be doing this mod in the future, love your videos keep up the great work. dennis, south australia
Great work bud. I am surprised this is your first servo mod.. Tire on the back looks good and adds some weight to the rig as long as it isn't too top heavy.. Looking good man. Look forward to the next one.. :)
Is the routing of the cable and out to the front going to be shown? Like the idea. Or 3racing winch under $30 can be bolted onto the front with more detail. I’m sure the servo winch is crazy stronger!
Yes, all will be revealed in an upcoming week. 3Racing winches are notoriously terrible. I'd stay away from those. I've had great success with RC4WD, TZi, Powershift RC, among others.
How exactly did you mount the spare? I tried with the included carrier and it is way to short to mount like you have it on yours... loving the build off! Thanks!!!
Really liked the servo winch trick, now I want to try it! Intro made me LOL on this one too :-) As much as I'm beginning to look forward to Wednesdays for this series, does that say you're that entertaining or my life is that pathetic? Ha ha.
Yikes, that's not cheap! I've done sound boards before, the Half-Track has one, and was about half the price. Needed a BEC though, so glitched out a lot. Thanks for the suggestion!
Styrene is great for body construction, but it wouldn't hold up to the abuse a cage might incur, so I'd probably not try that. That said, a new cage could be a cool project down the road...
Scale Builder's Guild I was just curious I'm going to start a tj crawler project and I though It would be cool to do the cage out of it but I'll just go to my hobby store and get some metal tubing
Great video, I just wish you could have been more in depth on where and how you mounted it and how it was plugged in. It’s weird because there are tons of mods for these things but no ( HOW TO) videos to help the newbie’s out on there install’s

Sorry. I know this is an old video. Does making a servo winch this way (keeping potentiometer) require another esc? You didn't say anything about a winch controller. So I'm just wondering if you can just plug it into the rx and you're good to go?
I realize I'm confused... does that servo winch work by simply plugging it into a 3rd channel in the receiver?? or do you need a separate controller of some kind? I didn't see it working in this video... sorry for my confusion.
Hello, I have a umg10 and I want to add a servo winch, I bought a servo but there is no little pin on the big gear and the center of the gear is metal, can I just cut the top of the potentiometer ? And why there is no pin ? I love you videos, thanks
@@scalebuildersguild I finaly cut the top of the potentiometer after glueing it, puting it back together, installed the servo in my truck, configured the third chanel with my remote and it's working fine. Thanks for your video :)
GMUMMY no, a servo tester will only tell the servo where the pot should be positioned. The servo will then try to react to get to that position. That’s why you need center the pot manually.
Scale Builder's Guild same size yes most of the time. But brand not always. Just think on a budget you might skip buying a fifth new tire and run a cheaper almost warn out tire.

so for this method you don't need and esc to operate the winch correct? Just plug into the 3rd channel? I forgot to mention nice instructional video, thank you. And that spool is a total rip off. $25 wtf.....No wonder more people are buying from china
You don't need an ESC, but I do recommend a winch controller like the one from HeyOK. I cover it in a later video. They work infinitely better than just plugging into a 3rd channel. Spool is good value and made in America, so I'll take that any time I can to support the little guy!

Definitely going in the spare servo bin and trying this! Didn’t realize it was that easy.
It's surprising what you learn! There are a few add-ons to make these more reliable, but the basics are the same.

It'd be interesting to try and do a very budget-concious build, but tough to do one that doesn't have strict starting requirements.
