Glad to see you are still around. You and I used to forage around the area a lot before I took off to CA.

Oh holy sh*t Mike, how are you? Hope the world is good. I still don’t ever find morels and suspect you and Parker lied to me about their abundance 😁. Take care and get in touch if you come back to visit or whatever

I always have trouble distinguishing black-staining and Berkeley's polypore. This is very helpful, thank you!

Thank you for the video. I used to ignore these believing they were poor edibles. However the young ones are quite good and abundant in western North Carolina.

I made mushroom ketchup with the black staining polypore. After I strained it, I dried the ingredients and ground it into a spice. Good stuff mushroom nerd.

Anna, love your videos. Im in VA but my kids are in Cary NC. I found several Hens today but have only ever found Hens in Oct. You mentioned finding them througout the year. Is that the case in NC?

Ah no, slip of the tongue. They’re one of the best mushrooms I find each year…but only in the fall

Black-staining Polypore is a vastly underrated mushroom. Makes incredible stock or jerky. Many mushroom foraging books will tell you to skip it.

Thank you! Are you in the Piedmont of NC. I live in Winston and hunt this area hard for mushrooms.

Yeah y’all seem to be in a dry zone maybe. I’d go north to the mountains of WVa/Galax VA etc

Whats the name of the knife brush tool? Thays pretty nifty

You can just search “mushroom knife” and the internet will know what you mean. My only warning is sometimes the cheapest knives don’t have blades that lock, which is ridiculous and best to avoid. But there are lots of inexpensive mushroom knives on Amazon and elsewhere

Anna, I really enjoy your videos, Thank you! My question is, is it safe to hunt for mushrooms in game lands and nature conservation areas by oneself? Have you ever encountered any dangers?

My gamelands spots are all fairly close to houses, so it’s mostly park type recreation. There are hunters ofc but they’re very conscientious and if you wear blaze orange it’s extremely safe. My biggest concerns are copperheads and falling on my face. Even more remote gamelands are pretty chill too, but i like to walk alone early in the morning, so I hit up gamelands that are popular with trail runners and family outings

Every week I’m harvesting pounds and pounds of grifola frondosa from my honey hole here in Michigan yesterday I found a fruiting the size of my upper torso that was full of maggots unfortunately lol.
