    When my infant son was in the U.S. hospital, they came in the unit and sent home any nurses or CNAs who had long nails or polish and they had four days unpaid off. After that, anyone who violated the policy was terminated immediately. Also, before that I refused to let anyone care for my son if they didn’t have short unpolished nails and told the nurse and reported it to the supervisor. My son was in protective isolation due to a weakened immune system.

      Wow…..that’s nice to know and it definitely saved your son. I agree with your approach and the hospital certainly helped in enforcing the laws.

    I worked at the VA hospital for 20 years and the policy for nails was that all staff had too have short nails and only clear polish could be used

      Interesting, did all nurses comply? Were there consequences for nurses who didn’t?

    Thank you for this video !!! I’m very sorry that this baby died😔 I had a lady with super long nails draw a blood sample from my arm, it was sooo painful !!! The line couldn’t be removed fast enough & then she wanted to have a second go at it - I refused & asked for another nurse. To this day, if I can help it, i won’t trust medical personnel with long nails to come close to me

      I agree with you on this, safety is key isn’t it?

    Hospital should not allow long fingernails. Nurses should be required to maintain short nails not only can’t they put on gloves it’s unhygienic. Disgusting

      Those laws do exist, it’s the enforcement that’s the problem.

    It is imperative that hospitals put policies in place to prevent nurses from wearing long nails, especially those that work in direct patient care.

    I hate long nails. some ladies think its cool. The only thing that comes to mind when I see one is... UNSANITARY!!! if I see anyone in a restaurant with long nails. I immediately exit and look for a different restaurant.

    Long nails are not hygienic. They don't allow wearer to wear gloves, necessary for hygiene. They don't allow a person to be as efficient as possible with one's hands. And false nails are a breeding ground for bacteria. As glue tends to not be 100%...when a person wipes themselves, cuts meat, bacteria can enter, and get between nail and false nail. Utterly disgusting, and putting the lives of others at risk. If a person doesn't care about hygiene, they should not be allowed in a hospital. So insane, one shouldn't even need to be talking about it.

    i was a nurse in the UK for nearly 30 years. during that time and since (I am retired now) all health care professionals (nurses, doctors etc) have short, unvarnished nails. rings are not allowed apart from plain, unpatterned wedding rings. watches, bracelets and clothing around the wrist are not allowed. indeed the rule is 'naked below the wrist'. if someone comes to work with long/polished nails or any of the other items they are immediately forced to put things right and are not allowed to touch any patient of any age or type. handwashing and gloves are also mandatory. if you value your nails above patient safety that you are not fit to be a nurse.

      I 💯💯 agree with this and agree with the stance which the NHS takes on cracking down inappropriate dressing. Was there a lot of resistance to enforcing this policy in your hospital?

    • @brummieinbristol522
      @brummieinbristol522 5 месяцев назад

      No, the staff were in support of the policy. NHS staff want to show they take patient safety and infection control very seriously. You get the occasional idiot but they don't hold out for long. We had regular bandwagon etc audits to check compliance. The only grumbles came from Drs who did not want to give up their ties for bow ties or open collars so nothing was dangling! Can't remember the last time I saw a white coat either x

    I live in the UK and l was in nursing at my local hospital and we would not never be allowed to have polished long nails in our code dress this is a tragic story l am a very surprised that USA hospitals would allow this in their code dress

      The laws do allow a 1/4 inch nail but no longer and that’s where people get away with longer nails.

    I'm a nurse in Nigeria, long nails, nail polish, heavy makeup, bracelets and rings are prohibited for nurses, you can't even leave your hair hanging down your shoulders, you must neatly pack it up well above your shoulders. We got this training from school and carried it into the field.

    Thanks for bringing this up. It's really appalling and unethical for nurses to wear long nails much more acrylic ones with polish while on duty. It's basic at least for those nurses trained in Africa. I don't know if the scope of practice is different from the West neither can we say much especially when the authorities are quiet about it

    • @ManasseyTetteh

      Some nurses claim they never touch a patient with bare hands so no need to worry about acrylic nails worn by nurses. Interesting perspectives 😃😃

    I know when working in the medical field, everywhere you go, has signs about not just hand washing but not just that but how long your nails can be, and also it even says about fake nails. I never had fake nails but maybe wxs in my life because of where I had worked since i was young only thing i wiuld do was get a manicurem if i had time plus wearing gloves all the time. So i don't see why someone would have long nails like that.

    • @ManasseyTetteh
      @ManasseyTetteh  5 месяцев назад +1

      I completely agree. I realise it’s high maintenance and would be hard to keep clean all the time especially with gloves tearing every now and then.

    Midwife nurses are not supposed to have long nails. That's the hospital policy.

      Hospital policies do vary but I think it’s universal policy for midwives to not have nails for obvious reasons 🤣🤣🤣
